I had a couple choices in mind for this number. EJ Gaines, Willie Ellison, but I ultimately decided to go with Charles White because of his absurd 1987 season. Probably the strangest career stats I’ve ever seen. One season over 400 yards rushing and it was an all pro year.

Anyone have the backstory on this cat? Injury? Appreciate any info.

The 1987 season was one of the two strike shortened years ... 1982 was the other. They played 15 games in ‘87 but about 3-4 were played with scabs and players that crossed the picket line.

That was Charles White’s big season. He rushed for over 150 yards in three games playing with and mostly against scab players. I don’t really count his numbers that year.

Both ‘82 and ‘87 were wasted seasons in my opinion. In fact the only season John Robinson did not get the Rams to the playoffs from 1983 (his first year) through 1989, was 1987.

White was a big time college RB ... for John Robinson at USC ... but just a good pro back-up. If I recall correctly, drugs were a problem for him.

Willie Ellison was a much better back. Ollie Matson is in the HOF but only played a few years with the Rams.

Charles White admitted to cocaine use in Cleveland. Robinson told him he could play for the Rams if he stayed clean. 1987 was a good year for him. He benefitted from a run oriented coach and an amazing OL.
