New York Guardians vs. DC Defenders

Week 1 of the 2020 XFL season left quite an impression on the football world, and fans are excited for what Week 2 will have in store. We could be in for a treat early on, as the second week starts with matchup between two teams atop the power rankings that found success in last week's openers. The DC Defenders (1-0) continue their homestand against the New York Guardians (1-0) who are hitting the road for the first time this year. Both teams contributed to last week's successful league debut, and now they must face one another and what could be a pivotal game moving forward.

The Guardians put on a strong defensive showing in last week's 23-3 home win over the Tampa Bay Vipers, while the Defenders put together plenty of highlight-reel material in front of a near-sellout crowd in their 31-19 win over the Seattle Dragons. These two teams and the St. Louis BattleHawks are tied for first place in the XFL East. The winner of this game will give themselves some separation in the standings.

New York at DC

Kickoff: Saturday, Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. ET
Where: Audi Field (Washington, D.C.)
TV: ABC
Spread: Defenders -5.5

Three Things to Watch

1. Defenders offense vs. Guardians defense

It's too early in the season to call this a David vs. Goliath matchup, but it's close enough. The Guardians limited Tampa Bay to just a single field goal in five trips to the red zone and racked up a ton of chaotic plays on defense. In addition to their league-leading five sacks, they registered eight QB hits, seven tackles for a loss, and three forced fumbles. And now they look to inflict the same punishment on a Defenders squad that seemingly moved the ball at will against Seattle last week. But the Defenders won't go down so easily.

Former Ohio State star Cardale Jones put on a show and even got some "MVP" chants from the home crowd. He finished 16-of-26 for 235 yards with two touchdowns of 30+ yards, which was good for a 116.7 passer rating. And critically, he had no turnovers. The Defenders averaged 5.3 yards per play, went 2-for-2 on fourth down conversions, and gained a good portion of their yardage using quick-strike plays from a variety of formations.

The key for this week will be to neutralize the Guardians' pass rush while also maintaining their efficiency. The Guardians pass rush will be challenged by Cardale Jones, who's more athletic than Aaron Murray and a better passer than Quinton Flowers. Guardians head coach Kevin Gilbride is known for his offense but has a nice security blanket on the defensive side of the ball.

2. Another quarterback showcase

Both signal-callers got the job done last week in different ways. Cardale Jones did it with his arm strength, mobility, and by distributing the ball to eight different receivers. As for New York's Matt McGloin (15-of-29, 182 yards, 2 total TDs), he was efficient when needed. With the New York defense shutting down the Tampa Bay offense, McGloin didn't need to be spectacular. But he did need to be on point when his chances came, and that's exactly what he did.

Both players will need to step their games up on Saturday. Jones will need to play with a sense of urgency in order to keep New York's pass rush at bay. McGloin, on the other hand, must pick up the pace against a DC team which will provide a much tougher challenge than Tampa did.

3. Head-to-head

Of course, these teams have not met before. But back in Week 13 of the 2007 NFL season, the Chicago Bears hosted the New York Giants. Pep Hamilton was the Bears quarterbacks coach under Lovie Smith, while Kevin Gilbride was calling the Giants' plays as their offensive coordinator. New York won that game 21-16. That loss would ultimately end the Bears' postseason hopes, as they finished 7-9 that year, while the Giants went on to win Super Bowl XLII. So in one way, Gilbride is already 1-0 against Hamilton.

Final Analysis

While I don't expect many points to be scored, thanks to New York's defense, DC's offense is too good to be completely shut out. The Guardians make it interesting, but the Defenders win a much closer game than last week.

Prediction: Defenders 24, Guardians 21

Tampa Bay Vipers vs. Seattle Dragons

Two teams looking for that elusive first win of the XFL season will get together on Saturday afternoon at CenturyLink Field. The Seattle Dragons (0-1) will host the Tampa Bay Vipers (0-1) as both teams will need a heightened sense of urgency this week to get back to .500 and keep pace in their respective divisions.

Self-inflicted mistakes hurt Seattle in a 31-19 road loss to the DC Defenders. The Dragons surrendered a blocked punt, interception return, and dramatic trick play for touchdowns, which ended up costing them dearly. Quarterback Brandon Silvers completed 21-of-40 passes for 217 yards and threw three touchdown passes to two interceptions. Silvers will need to improve upon his 52.5 percent completion rate moving forward — at least into low 60s. Austin Proehl was a bright spot for the Seattle offense with five receptions for 88 yards and two touchdowns.

Tampa Bay did not finish enough drives offensively up at MetLife Stadium where the Vipers dropped a 23-3 decision to the New York Guardians. Aaron Murray threw a pair of interceptions and was replaced by Quinton Flowers in the second half. The defense had some solid moments at times and brought a nice level of physicality, but as the season moves on, defensive coordinator Jerry Glanville will need his guys to play with a bit more discipline and cut down on costly penalties. A couple of positives for the Vipers on offense were wide receiver Daniel Williams, who caught six passes for 123 yards, along with running back De’Veon Smith, who rushed for 79 yards on just under five yards per carry.

Tampa Bay at Seattle

Kickoff: Saturday, Feb. 15 at 5 p.m. ET
Where: CenturyLink Field (Seattle)
TV: FOX
Spread: Vipers -2.5

Three Things to Watch

1. Dragons' pass rush

The ability to generate consistent pressure on the quarterback will be crucial for the Seattle defense to take some pressure off of their secondary. Will Sutton leads a defensive front that had one sack last week against Cardale Jones, and that was not quite enough to get the job done. This week, they will have an opportunity to go up against a less mobile quarterback in Aaron Murray, and they should have a goal of at least three sacks and plenty of quarterback hurries to go along with it. Tackles for loss is another key stat to watch for the Dragons this week, as they had eight last week against DC. If Seattle can consistently win the battle at the line of scrimmage, then things will get interesting really quickly on Saturday afternoon.

2. Tampa Bay offense

The Vipers outgained New York 394-226 last week but were only able to score three points. Tampa Bay was crucially 0-for-4 in the red zone, and that won’t cut it. Murray will need to capitalize on the plays the Dragons' defense gives him, as there will be ample opportunities this week. Head coach Marc Trestman will need to stay patient with the running game since the weather in Seattle in February is always unpredictable. Thus, if De’Veon Smith can get 20-plus carries this week, that will immensely help Tampa Bay’s chances of getting out of the Pacific Northwest with a victory. Also, if Smith ends up getting that many touches, that likely means the offensive line is taking care of business at the line of scrimmage, which will allow the Vipers to flourish on offense.

3. Seattle running game

The Dragons' offensive line definitely missed left tackle Isaiah Battle, who missed the game in DC with an ankle injury. Left guard Cyril Richardson also was injured during the game with a leg injury. It will be very important for the Dragons to have at least one if not both guys available this week. Ja’Quan Gardner, Kenneth Farrow, and Trey Williams shared 27 touches of the ball last week and showed some potential to be very effective. The weather for Saturday appears to call for rain and temperatures in the mid-40s. That is a typical mid-February day in Seattle and the perfect opportunity for Zorn and his offensive staff to pound the rock and test the physical toughness of the Vipers defense.

Final Analysis

It will be interesting to see what type of crowd makes its way to CenturyLink Field on Saturday. The Seattle area has an unrelenting passion for Seattle Seahawks and Washington Huskies. Their standard for success is very high, but look for the Dragons to get a boost from the home crowd and play well this week in a tough matchup. Bottom line, this game should stay competitive deep into the fourth quarter with Seattle pulling out a dramatic win over Tampa Bay thanks to a key defensive stop late to win the game.

Prediction: Dragons 23, Vipers 22

As much as I'd like to see it, I don't see those old billionaire good ole boys agreeing to this replay system.

I guess it depends on if they see the fans thinking there is bias in officiating is hurting the bottom line.

It’s really to bad the owners don’t make decisions for the integrity of the game.

Every time I look at the TV I have to remind myself that's not Auburn out there in Seattle playing Oregon.

I would love a viable XFL, but I feel burned by investing time in the AAF. Even the first XFL lasted only a year. I'll eventually watch a game, but with a bit of detachment.

Come on Loyal, just enjoy football in the shitty month of February. Besides, the nostalgia of watching a game in the dome should inspire your peepers to tune in right?
