XFL Week 3 storylines: Renegades look to ground game, Josh Johnson faces the league's top defense
Here's what to watch for in the upcoming week of XFL action

It's only been two weeks, but already some themes are developing in the new XFL. The most apparent is that teams with good quarterback play -- D.C., Houston and St. Louis -- are separating themselves from the rest of the pack. However, there are still eight more weeks of football left. And with no preseason, maybe it'll take a couple weeks for some other teams to catch up.

But time waits for no team. Football will be played this weekend, and based on the early returns some of it will be exciting and some of it will be tough to watch. Say this for the XFL, though: When the football is good, this league is a lot of fun. And who knows, maybe we'll finally get our first overtime, or first kickoff run back for a touchdown, or first big play off a double forward pass.

Here's what to watch for in the four games this weekend.
Will the Renegades ground the Air Raid?
If you only looked at the stat sheet of Dallas' 25-18 win over Los Angeles in Week 2, you would have seen that quarterback Landry Jones threw for 305 yards in his debut. Good, right? Sort of. He threw two interceptions, and frankly the offense only started moving in the fourth quarter when the Renegades started running the ball heavily with Cameron Artis-Payne and Lance Dunbar. With Hal Mumme calling plays and Jones taking snaps, there's an expectation that the Renegades were going to air it out this season, but what if Dallas' best offense is pounding the rock instead? The Dragons have a decent run defense, allowing just under 3.5 yards per attempt while averaging the most tackles for loss of any XFL team. If Dallas' run game gets stuffed, will Jones be able to bail them out?

Josh Johnson faces the XFL's top defense
The former NFL signal-caller wasn't terrible in his debut against the Renegades in Week 2 ... but he wasn't great, either. Now the Wildcats will face the XFL's top defense when the Defenders come to town on Sunday evening. D.C. leads the league in points per game allowed (9.6), yards per play allowed (4.03) and yards per passing attempt (4.6). They've also been exceptional at creating takeaways. Johnson brings a wealth of experience to the quarterback spot in the XFL -- something not all other players at his position have. Still, this is a big challenge to get win No. 1. If the Wildcats are going to pull the upset, Johnson, along with receiver Nelson Spruce, needs to have a big day.

St. Louis and New York try to rebound
The BattleHawks and Guardians lost in Week 2, but those games could not have been more different. St. Louis looked the part of a playoff contender by coming up just short against Houston. New York laid a goose egg against D.C. while quarterback Matt McGloin asked if it ever occurred to anyone that, uh, instead of uh, you know, running around blaming him, uh, that the problems behind the scenes could be a lot more uh ... uh ... uh complex. Uh, uh, it might not be so uh simple, uh, you know?

What's telling is that the BattleHawks are nearly a double-digit favorite coming off their loss. McGloin isn't New York's only problem seeing as it ranks near the bottom of the XFL in most defensive categories. But right now this team is in a lot of trouble, and you have to figure coach Kevin Gilbride will have to go in another direction at some point.

Will Tampa Bay finally score its first offensive touchdown?
For as bad as things have been with the Guardians, they've been even worse for the Vipers. Marc Trestman's team is a mess, and frankly, it'd be nothing short of stunning if a game against the Roughnecks fixes that. Houston is simply on another level right now.

So while there's not much to pull from this game from an interest standpoint, one fact remains is that Tampa Bay is the last XFL team to not have scored an offensive touchdown yet. Can the Vipers get that proverbial monkey off its back against arguably the best team in the league? #TampaBayTouchdownWatch2020 is underway.

Houston Roughnecks vs. Tampa Bay Vipers

On the heels of an exciting Week 2 slate, the 2020 XFL season continues this weekend. And the Week 3 slate starts with a matchup between the Houston Roughnecks and Tampa Bay Vipers, two teams heading in different directions.

The Vipers (0-2), who had the second-best preseason championship odds, are playing their first home game and in desperate need of a win, while the Roughnecks (2-0) are looking to keep things rolling and maintain their lead over Dallas and St. Louis (both 1-1) in the XFL West standings.

Houston at Tampa Bay

Kickoff: Saturday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. ET
Where: Raymond James Stadium (Tampa, Fla.)
TV: Abc
Spread: Roughnecks -5.5

Three Things to Watch

1. Home sweet home?

This will be the first game for the Vipers at Raymond James Stadium. How many of the 65,618 seats will be filled remains to be seen, but the Vipers are glad to be able to stay in the same city for the entire week. Perhaps some home cooking can help turn things around for Marc Trestman's team, which been outscored 40-12 (their only touchdown came on defense) thus far. They have issues on both sides of the ball, and they're hoping that having a home crowd will make a difference.

2. It's all about the quarterbacks

Quarterbacks have been the main story over the previous two weeks, and I don't expect this week to be any different. Houston's P.J. Walker has become a human highlight reel because of his stellar play thus far. Walker currently leads the XFL in touchdown passes (7), ranks third in passing yards (442), second in pass completions (43), and third among QBs in total yards (495). Walker has made big throws both from the pocket and on the run, and his mobility has frustrated opposing defenses. If the Vipers defense can slow him down, they'll give themselves a chance to win.

The Vipers have already used three different signal-callers this season. Aaron Murray, Quinton Flowers, and Taylor Cornelius have combined for 453 passing and 49 rushing yards in their ample opportunities to lead this offense. They've all been inconsistent as evidenced by the fact that they have yet to throw a touchdown pass while taking a combined nine sacks with five interceptions. The original plan for Trestman's offense was to have Murray be the full-time starter with Flowers rotating in on specific packages. But Murray injured his foot in the season opener at New York, missed last week's loss at Seattle as a result (Cornelius would get the start there), and he has yet to return to practice.

This team has struggled to move the ball, and it all starts under center. I think it's safe to say that the quarterback position in Tampa is in flux. Whoever gets the start this weekend will face a Roughnecks defense that has already registered eight sacks, 11 quarterback hits, and four interceptions.

3. Run the ball more

In Week 2, we saw more running backs get involved in the offense, and both of these teams were in on the action. In Seattle last week, a collective effort by Flowers, Jalen Tolliver, De'Veon Smith, and Jacques Patrick gave the Vipers 141 rushing yards. They posted the second-most yards on the ground in Week 2 behind the Dallas Renegades (154). As for Houston, Walker, James Butler, Nick Holley, and Andre Williams combined for 78 rushing yards in last week's win over St. Louis. They finished ahead of the New York Guardians (71) in that category.

If the Vipers run the ball more on Saturday, it can take some pressure off of their quarterbacks. And if the Roughnecks can run the ball more consistently, then it can add another layer to their offense. I, for one, would like to see more running plays called in the XFL.

Final Analysis

The Roughnecks are a well-rounded team, while the Vipers' glaring issues on offense are making it difficult for their defense to succeed. Ten of the Vipers' possessions this year have lasted just five plays or less. They've reached the red zone on just six occasions this season, and those possessions ended with two field goals, an interception, and three turnovers on downs. Tampa's offensive struggles, combined with Houston's success on both sides of the ball, will keep the Roughnecks among the ranks of the unbeaten.

Prediction: Roughnecks 28, Vipers 13

Dallas Renegades vs. Seattle Dragons

The Seattle Dragons (1-1) will be looking for their second win of the XFLseason on Saturday when they play host to the Dallas Renegades (1-1). This will be a battle of teams looking to continue to build confidence on both sides of the ball, along with keeping pace with the Houston Roughnecks in the XFL West.

Seattle showed some great resilience in their 17-9 win over the Tampa Bay Vipers last Saturday afternoon in front of 29,172 fans at CenturyLink Field â — the largest showing for any XFL crowd this season. They forced three Tampa Bay turnovers, played great defense in the red zone, and dialed up the pressure on the Vipers offense at the right time. Offensively, the Dragons showed they are still a work in progress; Brandon Silvers only completed 39 percent of his passes for 91 yards. The big play of the game was a Keenan Reynolds 68-yard touchdown reception that pulled Seattle within a field goal at 9-6. That explosive play carried over to the defense as Marcell Frazier's one-yard pick-six gave the Dragons a 14-9 lead that would hold up the rest of the way.

It took a little while for Dallas to get going on Sunday, but the Renegades found a way to win in knocking off the Los Angeles Wildcats, 25-18. Landry Jones completed 28-of-40 passes for 305 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Those numbers should steadily improve as Jones gets back into the rhythm of playing every week. Cameron Artis-Payne carried the ball 14 times for 99 yards and scored a couple of touchdowns. The defense kept Los Angeles in check for the most part and they limited the Wildcats to just 57 rushing yards on 18 attempts — a recipe for a lot of success for the Renegades.

Dallas at Seattle

Kickoff: Saturday, Feb. 22 at 5 p.m. ET
Where: CenturyLink Field (Seattle)
TV: FOX
Spread: Renegades -4.5

Three Things to Watch

1. Seattle offense

Brandon Silvers will be further under the microscope this week since fans will not tolerate another week of a completion percentage of less than 40 percent and a stagnant offense. B.J. Daniels provides more mobility, and, with the offensive line issues that Seattle is working through, it will be interesting to see if Daniels gets more game reps. Seattle will also have to address its issue of keeping drives alive; the Dragons converted just 20 percent of their third-down opportunities last week. Staying patient with the running game by feeding Trey Williams, Kenneth Farrow, and Ja’Quan Gardner the rock and setting up short, manageable third-down opportunities.

2. Dallas defense

This unit was locked in during the first three quarters when they held the Wildcats to just three points and forced a couple of turnovers. Things got a little interesting in the fourth quarter as Los Angeles did put 15 points on the board, including the first successful three-point PAT in league history. Linebacker Greer Martini had a big day for Dallas with five tackles and a fumble recovery to set the tone for the rest of the defense. The next step in the evolution for this Renegades defense will be to get off of the field on third down. Josh Johnson and the Wildcats converted 7-of-13 third-down situations. That can’t happen this week up in Seattle because they need to get the ball back to their offense as quickly as possible in order to get the win on Saturday.

3. Seattle defense

This will be a big test for the Dragons defense. The Renegades' Air Raid offensive attack has the potential to stress a defense at any moment. Playing sound football and executing individual assignments will play a big factor in Seattle’s success this week. Linebacker Steven Johnson stepped up in a big way last week with 10 tackles and two tackles for a loss — and this comes after racking up eight tackles in Week 1. Cornerback Steve Williams had seven tackles and 1.5 sacks last week as well. It is going to be very important this week for Seattle to generate pressure from all angles and make Landry Jones uncomfortable in the pocket. Getting off the field on third down is going to be another key to victory for the Dragons. Seattle allowed Tampa Bay to convert 9-of-17 on third down, and that number won’t get the job done this week against a Dallas offense that can move the ball well down the field. The good news is that red zone defense has been perhaps the Dragons' biggest strength. Opponents have failed to convert any red zone opportunities against them so far this season.

Final Analysis

There is something about football games at CenturyLink Field that tend to provide a ton of drama no matter what league is involved. This week should provide more of the same as the crowd of just under 30 thousand did a great job of providing a loud environment for Seattle. The noise should give the Dragons defensive line that extra split-second advantage to cause havoc in the Dallas backfield. Pre-snap penalties for the Renegades are also something to keep an eye on. Seattle will come up with a couple of explosive plays on offense to give them just enough to pull off the upset over Dallas in another dramatic affair for a national television audience on FOX.

Prediction: Dragons 19, Renegades 17

Won't be watching much this weekend as I'm working today to get ready for a major presentation on Monday and we have a family function to attend on Sunday although I'm recording the Guardian/BattleHawk game as I'm interested to see St. Louis at home in the American Center Dome for obvious reasons.

IMO, after watching a couple of weeks the Tampa Bay Vipers under Marc Trestman (who I never liked) are in serious trouble. They blew it backing Aaron Murray and he's hurt and although Quinton Flowers can run, he cannot throw consistently to make him a full time starter and Taylor Cornelius stinks as I see 0-10 for Trestman, who can only coach in Canada.

Looking forward to seeing the St. Louis game. They've been pretty fun to watch. Saw an article where they said there should be about 28,000 in attendance.
