WR Allen Robinson's fate looms large over Rams offseason

LOS ANGELES -- It was clear from talking to members of the Los Angeles Rams front office and coaching staff at the NFL’s annual league meetings, that the team isn’t sure whether wide receiver Allen Robinson II will still be a Ram at the start of the 2023 season.

Los Angeles has been taking trade calls on Robinson, who is coming off one of the worst seasons of his career. After signing a three-year, $46.5 million contract with two seasons of guaranteed salary last offseason, he totaled just 33 catches for 339 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games, ending up on injured reserve to end 2022 after needing foot surgery.

But because Robinson’s 2023 salary is guaranteed, there’s a chance the receiver is still on the roster to start next season.

If so, Rams head coach Sean McVay said he’s made it clear to Robinson that, “I'm going to pour everything I have in you as a player, try to help you reach your highest potential, make sure that it's an enjoyable experience where you love coming into work.”

General manager Les Snead said McVay and new offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur’s goal this offseason needs to be how to best utilize the receiver.

“We always say what are the superpowers of each player [and how can we] get the most out of them?” Snead said. “ … Probably a lot of times you feel like him being in a role like Cooper [Kupp] could be the most beneficial, but are you going to take one of the two off the field? So now I know now you have to figure out, ‘OK, how do you make that work?’ That would be on Sean and Mike to get that done.”

McVay said he and LaFleur are focused on setting up the foundation of the offense as a whole before focusing on individual players and are still “navigating through” Robinson’s role in the offense.

“You always want to have a vision for your players, but there still is a foundational part of your operation offensively in particular that you want to be able to set,” McVay said, adding that Robinson’s role is “unique” because there were so many moving parts around him last season due to the injuries the Rams dealt with on offense.

“We talked about [quarterback] Matthew [Stafford], we talked about the offensive line, and in so many instances, particularly the receiver position, is relying on those positions to be able to influence and affect the game the way that you want to,” McVay added.

But there’s certainly a chance the Rams can find a team interested in trading for the veteran receiver. At the start of free agency, the Rams let Robinson know that they could see themselves in trade rumors this offseason. Snead said the Rams “let [Robinson] know that we would definitely listen and talk to other teams, but because of his contract situation, it being guaranteed, there is a possibility that he's a Ram on the field in ‘23.”

If the Rams trade Robinson before June 1, they’d incur $11.2 million of dead money in 2023 and save $6.85 million of salary cap space, according to Over the Cap. If the trade takes place after June 1, that dead money number drops to $2.8 million in 2023 and would save Los Angeles $15.25 million of cap space.

The Rams aren’t in any rush, especially because Robinson’s $10 million salary is in line with some of the other receiver deals signed this offseason. The New York Jets signed wide receiver Allen Lazard to a deal with an AAV of $11 million; the Las Vegas Raiders signed wide receiver Jakobi Meyers to a deal with the same annual value. The New England Patriots signed JuJu Smith-Schuster to a deal worth an AAV of $8.5 million per season and former Rams receiver Robert Woods signed a deal with the Houston Texans worth an average of $7.625 million per year.

The Rams believe there could still be interest in the wide receiver, especially as teams re-evaluate their roster after the draft and free agency. Los Angeles is also willing to pay some of Robinson’s salary in a trade, a team source told ESPN, depending on the draft compensation they get in return.

The Rams went away from their typical model by signing Robinson in 2022. He was the only true unrestricted free agent signing the Rams have made since 2018, Snead said, adding that left tackle Andrew Whitworth and wide receiver Robert Woods were the only others since McVay came on board.

Los Angeles relies so heavily on the compensatory pick formula to maintain a roster highlighted by star players and filled out by Day 3 draft picks that they typically do not stray from their mode of not signing star players as unrestricted free agents. The exception was Robinson, who the Rams pivoted to after linebacker Von Miller opted to sign with the Buffalo Bills instead of re-signing with Los Angeles.

And although Robinson’s future in Los Angeles is uncertain, McVay said, “I don't think it's uncomfortable because those are the realities of the situation.”

“If he is here, be excited about it,” McVay said. “And if he's not, then you wish him best in his next stop. And so that's kind of where we're at. If that's where the situation remains, where he's a Ram and we start that offseason program on April 17, I'm looking forward to going to work with him.”

The way they treat players is admirable. Almost to a fault. I believe in karma and maybe it shows up in this year's draft? Huge hits and terrific complimentary players.

But what is the story on Robinson?
Gave him premission to find a trade?
Or want to trade him?
Taking trade calls?
Or making trade calls?
In the plans?
Or not in the plans?

I wouldn't mind seeing one more year with him if it comes to that. With the current actions by the front office it would obviously be better to trade him for something if we can but I don't see any team doing that with the exception of a Aquib Talib type trade for contract dump but not sure I'd want to do that. It's extremely easy to dump his contract after 2023 so seeing if he can click with a healthy Stafford with a whole OTA between the two and hopefully a healthy oline during the season wouldn't be terrible.

:pointup:I find this.

:pointup:A bit in conflict with this.

Do we want him, or not? Does he want to be here, or not?

It appears to me that the ambivalence allows McVay to embrace him if he is not traded. This way the coaching staff and front office do not look heartless towards a player they may have no choice but to play this year.

IMO… It’s a lose lose scenario for the team. If he’s here the coaches should work him into the offense. Sitting him is the true definition of DEAD MONEY. Trading him after 1 season is a clear indication of a front office failure..IE Wagner.

I suspect they are not sure he can learn and execute the offense at the desired proficiency.

Snead basically said he is too similar to Kupp but if that was the situation him and Kupp alternating in the calls/scheme as first read should balance things. So still feels like this is a "not smart enough" or "he was lost in the scheme" type situation.

One other possibility is he is an asshole and/or unliked in the locker room but that feels like a stretch.

Thankfully, this is a short term problem. If he plays out the year, and is then released, the dead cap hit goes from approximately $26M to $8M, and we save $10M on the 2024 cap.

Yeah seems like even when they make mistakes on signings, which they certainly have, they manage to structure things well enough to be able to wriggle out of them in most cases. Also I think Kroenke being willing to constantly move cash is a big deal too in their approach. Which, while I think about it, might be part of the reason the Rams are shifting priority to the draft.

I mean they won their big title in LA. How epic was that. So now maybe tone down the requirement on the owner a bit by going with a more stable build approach.

I'm on the fence with Robinson. He did not have a good first year with us. And trading him would save cap dollars. But I also know what he's capable of. If he gave the offense a legit redone target opposite Kupp it would sure make the offense better. But would he be that guy?

Even more mysterious is how do they use him if he stays? "Still navigating" that question imo isn't really very reassuring, especially to AR himself, even though McVay to his credit is doing his best to keep the vibe positive.

Still think we're missing a No. 2 receiver unless McVay has a nuts and bolts, play and route and situation specific role for Robinson that will enable him to be productive. Still need speed and playmaking at WR2, which might enable AR to be the useful big possession target he can actually be at WR3.

Just make Robinson the #1 read on few plays, not Kupp, and see how he does.

And as someone, maybe you, suggested, just tell Stafford to throw him the damn ball.

But I'm afraid Stafford is always going to throw the ball to Kupp instead.

This is a popular dig at Stafford but I think it's an overcooked theme. Fact is throwing it to Kupp is a good decision nine times out of ten because he is where he is supposed to be even when there's a route adjustment going on in real time.

So the plan here needs to be getting Robinson to that level. That's where we're at currently. If that happens then we'll see Robinson get some of those early reads in the scheme for a given opponent, and the share split will take place which should benefit Kupp as I don't want to see him getting too much punishment out there. The guy is crucial to us.

Agreed. That was the point of my previous post. Rams need a nuts and bolts plan to use AR, not just good intentions. One that will make him an actual target for Stafford.

i'm positive you saw what the offense looked like last season. it was fucking horrible.

kupp got his yards but the offense was stuck in neutral. he also took an absolute beating with dbs lining up to smash him. he looked buggered after every game. not good.

Exactly. Which is why I don't understand the putting Robinson on the market thing. Get him going then trade his ass if you still want to.

I don't see this as a huge problem. Either he plays well this year and increases his trade value or he's released next year clearing $10.1M off the cap. By the structure of his contract Robinson was never viewed as more than a 2 year player. Right now he gives them depth and allows Jefferson to move back to his more natural Y position.

Robinson XWR
Jefferson YWR
Kupp ZWR

I think Robinson's lack of production had more to do with Stafford than Allen. The aforementioned starting lineup could be very good if Matt comes off his obsession with Kupp and forcing passes into triple coverage ignoring any other open receiver. If Stafford uses all his weapons then Robinson could be as important to him as Woods was to Goff.

Bottomline was Stafford was the problem more than Robinson who now will have a full year to learn the offense and establish a rapport with Stafford. IMO this stuff about Robinson is garbage. He's a good WR if used properly by both McVay and Stafford.

Stafford just needs to begin distributing the ball accordingly throughout all games and utilize every receiver we have on the roster. If he continues just going to Kupp then yes this will be a problem…

And Stafford had no issues getting the ball to OBJ and they had literally no time together, so I'm not sure how culpable Staff is for Arob. And for sure like you said, when is it a bad idea to throw to Kupp being he catches 75% of the balls thrown his way

Yeah I think OBJ is a very smart dude. He had this offense down quickly and there was no uncertainty with the QB. It was like they've been playing together for years.

I'll bet down the road the truth will filter out and it'll be that Robinson just isn't all that smart. But maybe with two camps they can get him going. We're gonna need weapons to step up to elevate this offense and he's one of the options.
