An interesting discussion popped up on another site I post on so I thought I'd ask people here.

Now, the odds of Newton being available don't seem high. But if he were available, would you be willing to trade our 2015 and 2016 1st round picks for Cam Newton?

I would. He's not Brady or Manning but I think he's a level above Kaepernick and with Newton, we'd be a legitimate contender.

Now, here's one issue...Newton is owed $14.7 million in 2015 and then is a free agent after the season so we'd have to re-sign him to what is likely a lucrative deal.

On the other site, there opinions were mixed. I think it's an interesting question because he's just good enough that you're intrigued but not great enough where it's a slam dunk and the contract is something that is worth considering.

What say you, ROD?

I probably would. We are a QB away. He is a very good QB. I struggle trading so much for one guy who isn't elite though. I'm sort of torn, but I probably would do it.

No. Not even one first round pick. Not a fan at all. The stats below aren't the whole story why I don't like him but they're somewhat illustrative and interesting. To me anyway.

http://www.sportingcharts.com/nfl/stats/quarterback-rating-by-total-and-components/2014/
Quarterback Rating By Total and Components: 2014 NFL Season
Quarterback Rating is a statistic used to evaluate a Quarterbacks performance across various QB specific categories including passing yards, completion rate, passing touchdowns and interceptions all in a single number.

As detailed in the grid below, Quarterback Rating is comprised of four components - QBR (Comp), QBR (PassYards), QBR (TDs) and QBR (INT), which when combined give you the total Quarterback Rating. QBR (Comp) is a measure of completions to attempts, while QBR (Pass Yards) measures passing yards to attempts, QBR (TDs) touchdowns to attempts and QBR (INT) compares number of interceptions to attempts - each has an equal weight and can be a max of 38.58.

More about Quarterback Rating By Total and Components
A perfect Quarterback Rating is 158.3 while QBs with ratings above 100 are considered to be a sign of an excellent quarterback.

The following grid shows Quarterback Rating and its components for all QBs with over 100 passing attempts for the season.

No. I don't think he's that good. Average at best passer.

Yes, no question.

He's been durable.

He turns 26 in May.

Always had a quarterback rating north of 81 and career rating of 85.

80 to 53 TD/INT ratio.

All of which mostly bad teams in Carolina.

He'd be a winner here. But... Why would Carolina let him go?

Trading two #1s for a failed QB seems like a Raiders move. I would rather use the picks to move up in the draft and take a guy I liked if we needed a QB.

We could probably use just 1 pick to get Carr from the Raiders. Bradford and Carr doesn't sound bad to me. Certainly wouldn't take 2 firsts.

I don't think he is a failed QB. Guy has a Bradford esque supporting cast this year. Last year, he put up 30 total TDs to 14 TOs and his team won 12 games.

He's not Manning or Brady or Rodgers but he is an above average QB who still has potential.

Plus, I'm assuming that two firsts isn't enough to move up for the QB I want. And Winston/Mariota aren't a sure thing either.

I only called him a failed QB because it fit this scenario of the Panthers dealing him. I don't think they would yet.

Two 1s might get a Winston with his baggage.

I'd give that up in a heartbeat(if he passed the character test). But many people here wouldn't agree.

Hasn't Winston thrown like 17 picks this year? Seems like I saw that on here somewhere. Character issue aside, that doesn't strike me as trade up material. I suppose I should Google that after work...

I don't think draft picks matter anymore. We need 3 positions to be filled with average to above average guys and were an 11+ win team for a few years. There's no QBs coming out this year that are worth a damn, so yeah I would. It won't happen though. He's in Carolina for good. Plus he's kind of a douche.

Yep. But people also ignore that he's only a sophomore. Kid has unreal talent. He's got issues too but I'd take a risk on that kid.(if he passes the character test)

He's trade up material.

Dan Marino threw 23 Ints as a Senior. Ints wouldn't keep me from drafting the guy.

No I wouldnt make the trade for Newton because he wouldn't be a good fit in Schottenheimers offense.

Now if an OC were to be brought in with a more creative offense and re signing Cam was a condition of the trade then sure.

I don't know, I feel like Newton could fit into our offense.

He always seems to be dinged up. He may play but i think it affects his performance. No thanks.
