Fox was being moved to OLB and I was anxious to see the transition, however, with the his injury along with Okoronkwo’ s foot surgery and rehab taking him into training camp, will the Rams look to sign a veteran at OLB like Junior Galette for example or bring back Connor Barwin? Or are the Rams set to go to camp with the following options:

Matt Longacre….Longacre is also coming back from injury so I’m sure his play will be monitored and Longacre did showcase the ability to make plays in a small sample size, but will he be 100% and be able to handle the extended playing time moving forward? Longacre does have a great motor and has been a nice find as an UDRFA out of Northwest Missouri State, but again, the rehab and the extended playing time might expose the back yard hopeful.

Samson Ebukam….When Ebukam’ s name was announced by Hall of Famer Jackie Slater last season on draft day in the 4th round, I like others were like, who? Eastern Washinton? Oh, they must of noticed him when scouting Cooper Kupp. Well, Ebukam was a pleasant surprise last season and did showcase the ability to rush the passer and hold the edge against the run, but again, in limited playing time. Ebukam is one of the key to the success because with the interior defensive line strength, Ebukam must prove the Pointer Sisters right and create fire and kiss the opposing Quarterbacks on a consistent basis.

Trevon Young….This is one of my favorites and I really liked the youngster more after watching his interview, as Young has faced adversity having hip surgery after being a stud pass rusher for the Louisville Cardinals, however, that surgery is a long rehab and Young was just starting to come back into his own at the end of last season. The injuries opens the door for Young and my hope that he can take advantage and seize the day because the Rams will need somebody to showcase the ability to put constant pressure on the Quarterback when called upon.

Ejuan Price…Now as tough as I have been on Price dismissing him because again at Pittsburgh, he was not the most durable player, but playing the role of a designated pass rusher, might be the perfect fit for this former Panther. Price does have pass rush ability and at times, it did seem that he belonged, so again with Okoronkwo working his way back, Price will have a chance to shock us all and showcase why Price had 24.5 sacks in his last two years at Pitt.

Garrett Sickels….That’s right, I’m posting this name as he was a late addition to the practice squad and the Rams brought back the former Nittany Lion. Sickels led the Big Ten with 43 Quarterback Pressures, however, is better when he is freed up to not engage with tackles and most likely at this level will be a pass rush specialist.

Brain Womac….Many of you know I visit Texas every year (having family in the Dallas/Fort Worth area) and have an affinity for Rice University as you are a true student athlete at this fine university in Houston. Womac is going to be easy to root for in training camp because he has a nonstop motor and most likely will be the first one on the playing field and the last one off….Does have some pass rush skills and some ability to drop back in coverage, however, has limitations and did not run well at his pro day because of having the flu, so bad timing to be under the weather, but again, he could impress special team coach John Fassel enough to get noticed.

So there you have it, now the Rams might mix and match and they might bring in a veteran that could change the mix, but to this point, this is how OLB’s look heading to the next OTA and things could change drastically before actual training camp because you also have mandatory minicamp June 12-14th so many of us feel this is an area to put under the microscope because somebody will have to rise to the occasion with last year starters Quinn & Barwin not on the roster.

I would think you almost have to bring in a bet of some degree.
Maybe Barron moved outside in some sets?
Run more 3/3/5?

The same guys that Wade said would be starting before the draft, Ebukam and Longacre.

Are there any updates on Obo?
Im not even sure to the extent of surgery performed, not that he was going to get significant playing time to begin with

Good post, I personally think they were ready to roll with what they have, now that Fox (a potential key role player) is down i guess we’ll just see just how much confidence they really do have in the two aforementioned by OS, but, just for the sake of insurance, you’d think that perhaps they’d make some kind of move

Nice piece, Denny. I think your top 4 listed guys will probably be in the rotation, along with Obo. I hope Obo has a short rehab and jumps in the mix by the second quarter of the season.

As to whether we sign a vet, that will probably be determined soon by Sean and Wade, as well as Les and the shaking out of the cap.

I’m sure they have Barwin on speed dial.

The Fox switch would have been interesting. Wish we knew more on Obo who I thought would get good amount of reps. Longacre was in on 40 percent of the snaps before the injury. Hope he comes back fine. Getting him into the 60 percent snaps was doable without production loss. Ebukam is a hard worker looked pumped walking into OTAs. I have confidence in him taking a big step in year two. He could take 50-60 percent of snaps to. The theme here is rotating players in to keep them fresh which could negate the lack of experience.

Let's not forget Justin Lawler from Pottsboro, Texas who is an effort guy.

If the Rams keep four OLBers you have
Longacre
Ebukam
Obo
?????

I'm not sure if Price, Young, Lawler, Sickles or Womac are ready to start or see significant playing time in rotation or should the Rams lose a starter. The Rams will use four defensive lineman at time but, I'm not sure how much. Easley, Westbrooks and maybe J Frank could add pressure while help the pass rush and give the OLBers a rest.

All in all I'm going to think the Rams could us Junior Galette. Barwin is too slow. Galette moves everyone down a peg as far as experience. He would fit in the rotations as he had a top level pressure percentage last year with limited playing time.

Galette
Longacre

Ebukam
Obo

Having Gallette makes the unit look much stronger in my opinion. I don't buy into the fact that the Rams having both a great secondary and defensive line that they can get away with a below or close to average LBers. The Rams need pressure off the edges and solid contain to be a great defense.

Going to need more than those two and Longacre coming back from a back injury and those tend to be a slow recovery.

Like that idea and in fairness to Barwin, thought he did a nice job against the run. As to Galette, three sacks last year and had torn his Achilles not once, but twice. Maybe sticking with the younger guys is a better option.

Maybe, maybe not but we probably should wait to see what they do in camp. Plus with Obo and the other additions we'll be fine. We have a Pro Bowl caliber DLine and secondary. If the guys in the middle are average this is still a great defense. I'm trusting Wade, he likes Ebukam and Longacre to start and that's good enough for me.

It doesn't sound like you like the idea Den, lol.
Galette is two years out from the injury and played last year. Sacks don't always tell the story. I like the fact that he was in the top 3 in pressures. In the article he explains that playing more would have helped him by establishing a better rhythm to produce more sacks. Since, I read this article before free agency he has been on my radar. His pressure percentage is right up there ahead of Quinn's rate last year. For the veteran minimum or so, it's not a big risk to take with both Longacre and Obo coming back from injuries. I'm all for giving the young players a chance but, with the high investment in players this so far this off season a small investment in Galette could be a good insurance policy.

I was thinking similarly Move Littleton or Barron outside and pick up Mychal Kendricks or Navarro Bowman at ILB.

Free agent OLB Junior Galette says he's contemplating retirement.
30-year-old Galette claims he has "three deals on the table," but they apparently aren't good enough for him to sign on the dotted line. Injured for all of 2015-16, Galette finally returned last season, notching three sacks on 407 snaps for the Redskins. May 20 - 10:37 PM

What @kurtfaulk said...

I'm curious if any of the teams that offered Galette a contract have identified themselves?

Thanks for the info. I was surprised he had not been signed.

Me too.

I guess he could retire. He has made over 25 Million in his career. Of course he could be trying to up the ante. He seems like he wanted to play before free agency.

Currently, there is not much out there in free agency. Rams may have to roll with the yoots.

I’m thinking Obo gets rotated in like Charlie Clemons back in the day.

A few situational pass rushes at the beginning of the year and then playing time increased as the season goes, if he can get to the QB.

We went all in on the interior defensive line. The result is something we'll need to live with.

I like Wade making the statement and showing confidence in who we have, but let's be real, if they can't cut it some contracts will need to be converted to create cap space so we can go thrift shopping. Pretty slim Pickens out there but that's the reality.

Just to add to this conversation here ...

I seen where articles listing the Rams defense as a Nickle-Base scheme? Five DB's leaving the front @ seven. Wade played more Nickle 4-2-5 most of his defensive snaps. That placed Ogletree & Barron (sometimes Cory Littleton) as the only two inside Lb'ers on the field. Do we expect to see less or more of a Nickle or Dime this season ?

Rams did let 3 DB's depart....Trumaine Johnson, Cody Davis & Kayvon Webster. They did replaced those three with Peters/Talib & Sam Shields. Rams did sign & return 9 other Ram DB's in Joyner/ NR-C/ Troy Hill/ Peterson/ Nixon/ Hatfield/ Countess/ I.Johnson/ Christian. Did the Rams DB become better or lesser?

To add even more to this discussion the DL At least IMO is also more talented this season than last. The return of a healthy uninjured DT Dom Easley & the addition of all pro DT Suh to go with last years DL of Brockers/Donald & Westbrooks. This these five DL'ers & drafted John Franklin-Meyers & Sebastian Joseph be less superior than what the Rams fielded in 2017 with Brockers/ Donald/ Westbrooks/Walker & Smart

Last season we saw Wade use our starting OLB'ers in the Nickle DL front. Both Barwin & Quinn were far more 43 DE's than 34 OLB'ers both are gone. Might it fair to say that with so much talent in our backfield & our front DL is there really a big need for any real concern here? .

Was the 2017 Nickle & Dime DL front of Quinn/ Donald/ Brockers/ Barwin better than the 2018 Easley/Brockers/Suh/ Donald ? Was our 2017 Dime backfield of Johnson/ Webster/ NR-C/ Joyner/ JJIII/ Davis really better than a 2018 Dime backfield of Talib/ Peters/ NRC/ Joyner/ JJ III/ Shields?

Appears to me the only real issue here is finding a LB'er who can play next to Mark Barron in our Main Nickel defense. That another thread discussion....but the interesting thing here is we do know that neither Kiser, Scales, Wilson & Littleton have shown good range in coverage & the skills to play man or zone effectively against the pass. That just leaves Bryce Hager who most have written off as cut bait.

Wade sure did go Nickel & Dime quickly last season so just how many 34 OLB'ers will be needed. Would they NOT need to stop the run first? I can see the rookies 6-4 260 Trevon Young & 6-4 283 John Franklin-Meyer getting major reps to replace the 6-3 275lbs Morgan Fox.
