Drivers in Atlantic Canada are being told to prepare for reduced visibility on the roads this weekend.
"A low pressure system currently affecting Ontario will merge with an east coast low near Cape Hatteras to form a powerful Nor'easter for the weekend," says Gina Ressler, a meteorologist at The Weather Network. "While the storm will be seen on Friday, the worst of the weather will be throughout the day Saturday for the Maritimes and Sunday for Newfoundland and Labrador."
Up to 40 cm of snow is possible in parts of the Maritimes, with around 30 cm forecast for Newfoundland.
"Strong northeast winds gusting up to 90 km/h will result in blowing snow and reduced visibilities," says Ressler. "Strong winds may also create breaking waves and high surf along the north-facing shorelines."
Ressler adds that this will be a high impact event, not just for Atlantic Canada, but for the US eastern seaboard as well.
"Winter storm watches and blizzard watches have been issued for New York and Boston respectively, so travellers should check for flight cancellations and delays," warns Ressler.
