Will this be Sebastian Joseph Day’s curtain call?

The LA Rams have a lot of important decisions to make, and 2022 is a huge year for what to do about expiring contracts. We know that the Rams must be a bit tight-fisted now, as the salary cap ceiling dropped precipitously rather than continue its steady climb as the team had hoped. Salary cap dollars suddenly became quite scarce for the team in 2020, and then again for 2021. Now, the team must decide who, if any, will be offered a contract extension to play for the team in 2022. One such player whose fate hangs in the balance is Sebastian Joseph Day.

Sebastian Joseph Day is a young and promising player for the LA Rams. He plays the nose tackle position but is versatile enough to play anywhere along either a 3-4 or 4-3 defensive front. His performance has improved steadily each season, to the point where he is likely expected to put up a career-high season for the Rams this year.

He, like all defensive linemen for the Rams, gets the Aaron-Donald effect. So one of the first questions that the LA Rams must answer in planning their 2022 roster strategy is to determine how much of SJD’s performance is SJD, and how much is Aaron Donald? Of course, some of his steady climb to NFL performance must be attributable to Bash (his high school nickname), as he has become entrenched in the nose tackle position, his off-season training has focused exclusively upon that role.

That’s critical to know because the Rams must commit to either defensive back Darious Williams, interior offensive lineman Austin Corbett, reserve offensive lineman Joseph Noteboom (who is the primary backup to the expected-to-retire offensive left tackle Andrew Whitworth), or any number of players whose contracts expire at the end of this season. Who is the team’s priority?

Steady improvement

Joseph-Day is not unique in his career for the LA Rams so far. Rather, his story is rather mainstream for this team. He arrived on the team in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL Draft, hearing his name with the 195th overall pick. At 6-foot-4 and 310-pounds, he arrived with the right size, but with a rawness that his draft profile concluded would require more muscle mass. Of course, he was given the opportunity to develop. That’s the Rams way it seems.

Although he made the cut and remained on the team’s 53-man roster, he was inactive for all 16 games. Of course, that was not wasted time in the least. He was watching and learning. He was constantly asking questions of veterans Michael Brockers, Ndamukong Suh, and yes, even Aaron Donald. Asking, and learning, and practicing, and training. By the end of the 2018 season, the Rams did not bring back Suh. Instead, the team tapped Bash to take over on the defensive line.

While he was the starting defensive lineman in both 2019 and 2020, he was not pulling the majority of defensive snaps. The Rams run a 3-4 defensive front. The toll taken on the front three is tremendous, so the Rams compensate by a rapid rotation. The result is that Sebastian Joseph Day pulls fewer than half of the defensive snaps in one season. Still, he has managed to put up respectable production despite the limits to his on-field time.

His role for the team, at the nose tackle position, is not to sack the quarterback. With the growth of mobile quarterbacks, the nose tackle is tasked with maintaining an even pocket that will collapse on the quarterback. As soon as Bash dislodges from the offensive linemen, a mobile quarterback can break to the running lane where he is no longer located. Sometimes, the key to the defense is not to play selfishly, but rather to maintain the responsibility of the assigned role.

He exceeds expectations

There are reasons to believe that the 2021 defense may be ever so slightly different. For starters, the third new defensive coordinator in three years is a good clue. Raheem Morris will give the Rams defense a new coat of paint, and that could affect several roles. The inside linebacker and nose tackle roles are the most likely to be impacted.

With the Rams investing at inside linebacker, it’s clear that the Rams want a more forceful and impactful player in that role. That includes all three phases of defense: Run-stuffing, pass coverage and pressuring the quarterback. While there are no guarantees that the Rams rookie inside linebacker Ernest Jones will start, it will come as no surprise if he has claimed the starting role this year. And with a move active player at the linebacker role, the nose tackle role will change as well.

Sebastian Joseph Day is working feverishly to improve his pass rush, the one area that has remained a vulnerability. In fact, Pro Football Focus considers him a break-out candidate for 2021. It’s pretty clear that a young NFL player’s career trajectory shows improvement for a number of years. With his redshirted rookie season, this is likely SJD’s third active year. That’s a good year to see a huge burst out of a defensive lineman.

Whatever the expectations of fans, he has consistently exceeded the expectations of the Rams coaching staff. Aaron Donald, much like Jalen Ramsey, influences his part of the football field. The Rams defense needs players like SJD in order to be completely effective. He’s young and stout and has plenty of great football in his future. He need not pull down the quarterback 10 times to have a great season. Will the Rams bring him back? If he has the type of year that he is capable of, and that some expect him to, he could be too expensive for the team’s budget.

I love SJD. He has worked hard and it shows. Unfortunately, he's gone after this year, and the Rams get another comp pick.

IMO if SJD figured into their long term plans why did they spend a 4th round pick on Bobby Brown? Why did they sign Robinson? Why did they draft Gaines?

He still struggles to get off blocks. Once he's engaged he almost always stays engaged. His pressures and sacks are set up by AD and Floyd as coverage sacks. He's struggled to be stout at the POA on between the tackle runs. IMO the clock started ticking on SJD the minute Brown was picked.

SJD has never learned to play with leverage. He still plays too high and simply gets stood up and often blocked by a single lineman.

Robinson for his part has focused upon improving his game and has a much higher ceiling. I don't see Robinson as a bridge starter, but I question whether or not the Rams can afford him on a second contract.

Okoronkwo and SJD are the types of players they are referencing when the Rams say good enough isn't good enough anymore. Gaines has produced more with fewer snaps in rotation with Robinson. Gaines can also slide over to play a 3T if needed. Seriously, between Gaines and Bobby Brown both of whom are 4th round picks and SDJ a 6th round pick from 2018 who do you keep?

Breakout season? That's what was said about him last year but the team still drafted Brown. SJD was supposed to be a role player, i.e. an early-down between the tackle run stuffer. He hasn't done that. B. Brown comes in with that exact kind of run-stuffing reputation they are looking for.

Early downs and short yardage is why they drafted B. Brown and Earnest Jones who IMO rotates with Young on those kinds of downs.

Depth duh. You can't keep losing productive players without replacing them. That's like saying "why sign Robinson if Gaines is so good?" "why draft B.Brown or E.Brown if Gaines and Robinson or Williams/Hoecht(who haven't played a snap) are so good?" It's poor logic.

You've been dogging this guy for 3 offseasons now, you've predicted he won't make the team in all 3. And I'll wager that you'll be wrong again this offseason too. Of course if they do decide to not re-sign him you can write it off as "he simply wasn't good enough" like you did with Brockers.

Gaines has produced more with fewer snaps
No he hasn't. If that were true he'd be the starter, not stuck with Robinson at the bottom of the DL rotation. When Gaines drafted almost everyone pegged him as the starter, funny how things work out.

Yeah, Old-Not-Dead is not a fan of Joseph-Day ... or Havenstein; and I disagree with him on both players.

However, I have also disagreed with him on the roles played or to-be-played by A'shawn Robinson and Bobby Brown. He sees them as alternatives to Joseph-Day, and I do not. Gaines is Joseph-Day's back-up; and I thought both played well last season.

Robinson was signed when the Rams thought they had lost Brockers to the Ravens. I viewed that signing as a replacement for Brockers. When Baltimore backed-out due to health concerns, the Rams re-signed Brockers, and he retained his starting-role. When Robinson got healthy, he was backing-up Brockers ... at least that's what I saw.

With Brockers now in Detroit, my guess is that Robinson is his replacement ... as originally intended; and, furthermore, I see Bobby Brown competing for the back-up spot to Robinson.

Definitely agree, especially on the Robinson signing. He'll most likely be the starter at 5T, I think that SJD and Brown will be in the rotation there as well.

D-line trainer: Sebastian Joseph-Day poised for 'blow-up yea

On a defensive line that featured the best pass rusher in the world and the team’s longest-tenured position player, it was easy for Sebastian Joseph-Day to get somewhat overlooked with the Los Angeles Rams the last two years. But despite playing alongside Aaron Donald and Michael Brockers, Joseph-Day still managed to make a name for himself among Rams fans with a standout 2020 season.
As good as he was last year, he’s poised to break out this season. That’s what his trainer Eddy McGilvra (and many others) is saying.
McGilvra trains the Rams’ defensive linemen and edge rushers each offseason, getting an up-close look at the team’s big men on that side of the ball. He’s worked with Joseph-Day for the last two years and has come away impressed with the Rutgers product’s development this offseason.
In a phone interview, I asked McGilvra which player has stood out to him this offseason and could be in for a big year. His first choice was Joseph-Day.
“I think you hit it on the head with Bash,” McGilvra told Rams Wire. “I got with him two years ago and he was very raw. Really athletic, big body, but he had a lot of technical stuff to work on. Over this offseason, I’ve definitely seen the most growth in his game. I think he’s set for a blow-up year if all goes right, if he stays healthy – especially being next to AD taking all that attention.

Joseph-Day has looked more explosive and quicker in the last two seasons as a starter, slimming down a bit and improving his get-off. It helps that he plays on the same team as Donald, who commands a ton of attention from opposing blockers.
But Joseph-Day has developed his own pass-rush repertoire and plays with good power, making him a quality starter in the middle of the line.

The push-pull move below is one Donald uses often, keeping the blocker off-balance by starting with a bull rush and using a pull-through technique to bust through the line.
With more moves in his toolbox, Joseph-Day is bound to get even better as an interior rusher. He’s already an excellent run defender who made 55 tackles last season, but expect him to have more than the three sacks combined from the last two years.

Rams fans know all about the man they call “Bash,” but the rest of the football world will find out how good he is this year.

I’m a fan of SJD. I think he was very solid vs the run last year.

he can make himself a lot of money if he takes it up a notch.

Yes Highly likely his curtain call just like JJ, Troy Hill and Brockers.

It was nice knowing you Sebastian.

Give us your best this year SJD and help us win the Lombardi before you part ways.
