2016 NFL Draft: Los Angeles Rams Draft Prospects...Plus A Friend

Heading into their 5th draft in charge of the Rams organization, Les Snead and Jeff Fisher have drafted a pair of teammates in the same draft twice. Will they draft another pair in 2016?

Sometimes it can be pure coincidence that a team drafts two different players that come from the same college team. Other times a team will draft the second player in hopes of bringing along some familiarity for the first guy so each player can grow. The most recent high profile case of this involving a QB is when the Colts drafted Stanford QB Andrew Luck and TE Coby Fleener with their first two picks of the 2012 draft.

The Rams haven't done any pairing with any QBs they've drafted since 2012 but they did draft former West Virginia WR stars Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey in the 2013 draft in hopes they would become the dynamic WR duo the Rams needed. The very next year the Rams went back into pairing mode when they selected two members of Auburn's potent rushing attack in LT Greg Robinson and RB Tre Mason.

You may have heard that the Rams will likely be taking a QB first overall in the 2016 draft after trading up from their original selection at 15th overall. In the recent days leading up to the draft there are growing rumblings that the QB they take will be Jared Goff out of California. Luckily for the Rams, there are a few other Cal players that are possible draft picks who also play on offense. If they feel like giving the potential Rams franchise QB some familiar weapons, here are three options the Rams could pursue with their late round picks:

Lawler has shown ability to leap and play big even though he is on the skinnier side. He was Goff's favorite go to receiver while at Cal and could be that potential possession WR that the Rams hoped Brian Quick could be. He is not a burner but has shown solid hands and just might make it to the Rams 4th range. If Goff is the pick and Rams prioritize making him comfortable, Lawler would make the most sense and is more than likely the first of the Goff supporting cast that comes off the board. Scouting report here.

Anderson started out at Cal as a walk-on and eventually carved out a role in his last two years. He is more of a WR/TE tweener but was a reliable option for Goff. He is definitely not a blocking TE due to his size and won't burn by many defenders but he does move smoothly and get open. The Rams could use TE help and if Anderson can put on some size he could be an option later on. He most definitely should be available in the 4th round and perhaps even the 6th. Scouting report here.

Was highly productive in 2014 while almost totaling 1500 yards total offense with 12 scores but battled injuries in 2015. Not a small back but not bruising either. Has a little bit of wiggle to go along with decent speed. Likely won't be anything more than a wrinkle player in Rams offense and RB situation but could have his biggest impact on special teams coverage units. He almost surely be there in the 6th round and could possibly be an UDFA target. Scouting report here.

So there are three Cal players that could possibly join Jared Goff with the Rams. Right now only Lawler can project as being a solid contributor to the offense with the others being dubbed as likely role players with Anderson potentially turning into a receiving threat. The Rams have drafted teammates before and embraced the feel good story that comes with it. If the Rams are drafting teammates again in 2016, I wouldn't be surprised if it's any one of these three.

IF Goff is the pick, RB Lasco, would be a great addition! He could protect Goff and be a good PR/KR man!
Plus Lasco had a great Combine! 41.5 Vert./135 inch Broad/4.26 shuttle/and a 7.22cone! and to add to that 44.6 40 and a ore of 140.7!!

Every time I consider Goff, I think of Lawler and Lasco. So who knows?

Wouldn't mind any of those guys TBH. We need to trade Mason and or Foles/Keenum to get some draft picks back on draft day so we can add some potential contributors.

Depends on the need but Stephen Anderson has such a great story. He was a walk-on at Cal and became the most reliable target for Goff. Lawler is long and can make acrobatic catches especially in the end-zone. Goff has great chemistry with Lawler. Lasco showed some flashes, but had a disappointing season last year due to hip injury mid-season. All are good picks in my opinion :D

If you're going to fantasize about the Rams let's do it with bona fide NFL talent.

I remember back in 2010, I was hoping Jermaine Gresham would fall to the 2nd round so we could draft him along with Bradford.

Round 4 they're looking at possession options and Lawler has a shot in the NFL as a possession guy. So yeah, it could happen. He's got real good hands and body control which helps to make up a bit for his lack of speed. Being familiar with Goff helps too.

My only concern is that the Rams take him over a better prospect; don't overdo the focus on that familiarity IMO. If another guy slides to them in round 4 like Higgins there's no way I'm taking Lawler over him.

And also I think TE might have good value in that range as well provided teams don't reach too much on the position early.

Just take the German dude (Boehringer) and get it over with.
Since we're gambling, let's take a guy who may (or may not) become a straight up beast as well.

Maybe he'll be one of our 6th round picks! He has lasted into the 7th here on the ROD Mock Draft!
He very well could go undrafted .... He had a "not so great" season last yr. Plus he more suites the "change of pace" back more so than a #1 guy
