i read a comment about him not coaching and have always wondered. He is one of the most creative offensive minds I've ever seen. Why do you think he isn't coaching? Is he too picky? Is he hard to work with? Does he want to much power? Does he want to petition for 17 timeouts per half? There has to be something. The dude was just stellar at what he did.

He has talked about it before while broadcasting and he's said the fire just isn't there. He's probably too comfortable in the booth with Ron Pitts.

I absolutely positively love listening to Mike Martz in the booth! Dude knows exactly what it going on and gives you a technical a alto that is bar none the best. Lol he has cool stories to! I'm thinking for some when you get in that booth it becomes a decently good paying job with limited time commitments and still able to be right around the game.

With that being said listening to his interviews since his last coaching stint I truely believe he's learned from a lot of his arrogance and mistakes he made and is a lot more well rounded individual now. He might pull a Vermeil and after being in the booth a long time he'll come back to coaching.

Mike Martz gave me some of the best memories any football fan can have. 95 thru 98 I hoped the Rams would be competitive. Then 99 rolled around WOW!
Three straight seasons of 500 points. The best sustained offense I have ever seen. I personally love defensive football but the Rams with Martz was unreal.
Prior to that you had Reeves running Anderson 400 times a season or Shanahan running zone blocking with TD to succeed. I think Martz was a major influence to the modern passing game.
BTW Faulk was the best player in the game during that stretch.
IDK if we will see anything like that again.
Overlooked was that the Rams had a top ten defense at that time. Amazing.

Here are a couple of threads that deal with this question from earlier this year when we were still searching for an OC.

http://www.ramsondemand.com/threads...ider-martz-for-oc-i-got-a-few-chuckles.35065/

http://www.ramsondemand.com/threads/would-mike-martz-get-back-into-the-nfl.35631/

Martz is 64 and may be burned out from coaching but then again he interviewed with the Browns earlier this year. MM gets results from an offense but has a rep for not playing well with others. In order to get hired in the NFL, a man must have both things going for him. See Jim Harbaugh as another example.

With the right pieces he can be deadly, but you need the right pieces, and it's hard to get that.

It's the same reason why you don't give a GMV to a company, it doesn't fit.

You would think he would find an understudy, someone to pass his ideas on to. To carry his legacy. All the best visionaries had a coaching tree. Walsh, Billecheat and Parcells all passed on their knowledge to several successors. Now I know he didn't invent the west coast, he didn't cheat his way to 4 SB and he didn't take multiple teams to the SB either, but he changed the way the game is played today.

Who was the OC when the Bears went to the SB? I thought that was Martz.

Martz is/was brilliant. I won't even listen to discussion to the contrary (or I will take my ball and go home). Seriously, as brilliant as he was, I still blame him for the SB36 loss. Dude was way too arrogant. He should come back and show Chip Kelly whats up though........as long as it's not with the Putriots. He could do damage with this Rams offense me thinks.

If he is going to be a HC, then it takes a mature front office who is going to buy into his approach and give him the time to develop the team. If he is going to be an OC, then he needs a similar HC.

When you're a highly creative person, the people around you need to understand this and give you the space and time to develop. Most people are too insecure, and thus knee jerk to "acceptable" and "proven" solutions to avoid having to answer tough questions or justify their approach.

I see the above dynamic in business all the time, especially amongst young execs who "have all the answers"

Report: Mike Martz retires from coaching
mike-martz-retires-coaching-1.jpg

Cutler reportedly didn't want Martz back in Chicago. (Getty Images)

By Ryan Wilson

Mike Martz, the architect of the Greatest Show on Turf with the Rams in the early 2000s, has retired, NFL Network Jason La Canfora reported Monday. Martz served as Dick Vermeil's offensive coordinator when St. Louis won the Super Bowl in 2000, was elevated to head coach from 2000-2005, and spent five of the next six seasons as an offensive coordinator with the Lions (2006-07), 49ers (2008) and Bears (2010-11).

Martz's two-year stint in Chicago was a bumpy one; his offensive philosophy wasn't always shared by franchise quarterback Jay Cutler. And head coach Lovie Smith, who Martz had hired as the Rams defensive coordinator in 2001, was often viewed as Martz's enabler. Smith regularly rebuffed questions about Martz's future.

In late December, with the Bears' playoffs hopes dashed, Smith was asked if Martz, whose contract expires at the end of the 2011 season, would be back in 2012.

“What kind of question is that anyway, at this time?" Smith demanded at the time. "What kind of question is that? Why would you ask a question like that anyway?"

Six days later -- and a day after Smith was noncommittal on Martz's future -- Martz resigned for "philosophical differences." And today he retired from coaching.

The Bears promoted Mike Tice into Martz's old job. Tice had previously served as Chicago's offensive line coach and was the Vikings head coach from 2001-2005. Tice isn't considered the offensive mastermind that Martz was but might be by design. His biggest task should be to a) keep Cutler from taking hits and b) get Matt Forte the ball. You don't have to be a genius to know that. In fact, it probably helps if you aren't.

Report: Mike Martz retires from coaching
I'm sick of the culture in American sports that breeds anti-intellectualism
I think the reason that word is used derisively, in this case at least, is because he is a genius in his own mind. He is so sure that his way is the right way, that he tries to cram it down everyone's throat, even when he does not have the personnell to run his system. As a coach, a genius would understand the limitations of his players. It does not matter if his play is going to catch the defense off guard when the O-line cannot protect long enough for the play to develop, Hester and Knox don't know where to line up, and Martz is so brilliant that he can't even get the play in to Cutler until there are 5 seconds left on the play clock.

"simpler explanations are, other things being equal, generally better than more complex ones." - Occam's Razor.

If you have a mobile QB, a crappy O-Line, bad receivers, and a Pro Bowl RB, assume breakdowns in protection, get Cutler on the move, and lean on Forte. That won't get you the kind of offense you had in St. Louis, but it will maximize the talent you have been given, and that is the best any O-coordinator can do.

martz time in chicago ended when cutler arrived
Uh... Cutler was there before Martz. The biggest problem with Martz system in Chicago is that it requirtes a far better O-Line than the Bears have. Good coaches get the most out of their talent, rather than having a crapload of prerequisites in order to make their holy system work. Martz was very stubborn in Chicago. Tice might not be a genius, but he at least has seemed realistic about what his line can do, and has squeezed the most out of a flawed group of players.

Congratulations to the Chicago Bears organization. Your ineptitude and quarterback personell decisions has cost us what may be the greatest offensive genious ever. Good luck Tice, you still don't have anything resembling a QB.

Not only is calling plays for the superstars the Rams had easy but it could be argued that Martz' system actually hurt the Rams. Kurt Warner was a shell of himself when he left the Rams after injuries and concussions. It took him a few years before he was able to really get it going again in Ariz. Marc Bulger then got to be the sitting duck.

My point exactly! Now they want to get rid of Cutler and back then defended him when he didn't like Martz! Karma bitches!

I liken Martz to McDaniels... IF the personnel is right, it's great.

But they are too stubborn to adjust for what THEY DON"T HAVE.

It's why Martz struggled.. and why McDanields struggled in St. Louis.

Replacing Martz with Tice in order to "protect" Cutler...
