I just moved back to Phoenix in July. Had relocated to Truckee, CA (1/2 hour from Reno) last year and then spent my last month in Reno, living in a hotel near the strip. I loved the weather (was 100 in Phoenix two days ago) and there is a nice walking path/park/swimming hole right by the Greyhound station. Of course, that's also where most of the city's homeless people hang around but they don't bug you. Of course you won't have any problem catching a football game in one of the casinos. It's a bit ragged, but I like CalNeva to watch the games. There are two big rooms and $1.50 tallboys 24 hrs/day. They serve some pretty good food in their restaurant as well. Can't beat the $5.99 pork tenderloin. Peppermill was also a nice place to watch the games with less riff-raff. A little more expensive but I think they give you a free drink ticket for every $25 you bet on games. And if Texas Holdem is your thing, you won't find prettier cocktail waitresses than at El Dorado. They have one who was about 22 and looks exactly like Isla Fisher. If you're going to be there a week, I'd really suggest taking the short drive over to Truckee. It's a beautiful drive that I was lucky enough to make every morning my last month there. Check out Donner Lake and the museum there. Very interesting stuff. And if you just keep driving past the lake about 3 miles, you'll come to an overlook that's really beautiful. Just make sure you get your gas in Reno. It's likely about 75 cents more per gallon in Truckee. Hope that helped a little.
