Was going over player stats and where they stood among the rest of the league and was shocked to see Hekker's numbers. 24th in 2020. WTF? 16th in 2019. Top 5 for ten years before that. Loosing Bones the reason for the drop off? Hekker was not very good last season. Usually dependable for sticking teams inside the 10. He just didn't do that very often. Manybe some of you armchair QB's have some explanations.

Here's his career stats on NFL.com. Biggest difference this season was his net avg and return yards. Which are more team stats since they take more than just Hekker into consideration.

If you look at his avg punt distance it's within his norm range. Inside the 20 relies on bounces and no small amount of luck but they're also within his norm. Long punts are within norm too.

Just looking at the stats it seems to me that he got Bona'd.

Some suggested that due to bad coverage Bonamego had Hekker trying to place punts toward the sideline, or go for hang time over distance. Maybe that was what it was. He started the season well.

Untrained eye... stats aside... and no data to support the following;

I felt Hekker missed more kicks than usual this past year.

Balls that didn’t drop where he wanted.

He might have been pressing due to lack of confidence in coverage... but yeah, he seemed “off” last season.

This upcoming season should be telling. Is Johnny declining, which I doubt, or was he being coached into a corner? I believe he bounces back to his Pro Bowl status with improved special teams play. Hopefully Joe DeCamillis does what he was brought in here for, only time will tell.

Joe DeCamillis not worried about Johnny Hekker's down year in 2020

In a year when the Rams’ special teams unit performed as one of the worst in the NFL, Johnny Hekker had his own share of struggles in 2020. Particularly in the second half of the season, Hekker wasn’t hitting the booming punts fans have gotten so used to seeing.
He averaged a career-low 45.6 yards per punt, a career-low 39.7 net yards and had a punt blocked for just the third time. He did pin 28 of his 68 punts inside the 20, but Hekker wasn’t his usual self.

That doesn’t necessarily concern new Rams special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis, however. He still views Hekker as one of the best punters in the league, if not the top guy at his position.

“I still think he’s, if not the top punter in the league, he’s one of the top punters in the league,” DeCamillis told reporters in his first press conference. “Sometimes, you just get in situations where you may be in different parts of the field where you’re not able to drive the ball as far as you did in certain other years. So, that’s part of it. We’re going through all those stats and all the all those metrics right now, trying to figure it out. But, I think he’s a great punter and hopefully next year he has a better year. That’s my hope. That’s what our goal is.”

In addition to his punting numbers lagging, Hekker also went the entire year without attempting a single pass – the first time in his career that’s happened. DeCamillis said earlier in the week that he’ll be campaigning with Hekker for more fake punts, and during his introductory press conference Thursday, he clarified that those opportunities don’t always come up.

It’s obvious that DeCamillis wants to keep opponents on their toes and one way to do that is by calling fakes every now and then.
“It depends on the situation. I think it depends on what the head coach’s plan is, what your team plan is,” he said. “You want to play complementary football as much as possible. Sometimes, they come up. Sometimes they don’t. In Jacksonville, we were very successful the last few years doing that and I know having the talent that John (Fassel) has, I hope we’re able to continue the ‘trickeration.’ That’s what I hope happens. So, we’ll see what happens.”

The Rams need to be better in every phase of special teams, including punting. Hekker knows that, and so does DeCamillis. It’s just a matter of pinning teams deep and bailing out the offense when it fails to move the ball.

Maybe it was the coaching, but I noticed a change in the last few games of the season and in the playoffs. I thought he looked fatigued, or off. I think he will bounce back.

Love Hekker but...

It'll be interesting to see what a guy like Morgan Fox signs for. Not sure how I feel about keeping a punter and losing him if the money lines up

Great Article posted by @T-REX one of the reasons Joe DeCamillis was hired was to restore the special teams unit in every facet. IMO, I believe that Hekker will rebound, he did miss kicks and I believe some of that was on him, but hopefully Hekker can just go out and punt without worrying about placement all of the time.

Many of us knew that going from John Fassel to John Letgoofmyego was a downgrade and it showed. Let's keep one thing in mind, if not for Hekker, the Rams would not have Gay, it was Hekker that suggested signing Gay to McVay, so IMO, Hekker did struggle to a degree, but made up for it @bubbaramfan with his personnel suggestion.

Wasn’t impressed towards the end of the year. Ugly punts with no hang time flipped field position numerous times.
He’s been great , but there’s always a younger cheaper kid ready to take your job. I’m sure he’ll be working hard in the off season.

I’m a HUGE Hekker fan, but he didn’t pass the eye test last season. He was routinely outperformed by the opposing punter. Our defense consistently bailed him out when given a shorter than usual field.
Numbers don’t tell the whole story—it’s the timing of the bad/short kicks.

I know I will be blasted for this, but if we’re looking to dump salaries and collect more picks...
Kupp and Hekker should be considered.
