Bills sign QB Matt Leinart, trade for Thaddeus Lewis
With their top two quarterbacks both battling injuries, the Buffalo Bills added two more on Sunday, agreeing to terms with free agent Matt Leinart and trading with the Detroit Lions for Thaddeus Lewis.
Leinart, 30, spent last season as a backup with the Oakland Raiders after two seasons with the Houston Texans and four with the Arizona Cardinals, who drafted him No. 10 overall in 2006. In 33 NFL games (18 starts), Leinart has thrown for 4,065 yards, 15 touchdowns, 21 interceptions and a 70.2 rating.
Lewis, 25, was undrafted out of Duke and previously spent time with the St. Louis Rams and Cleveland Browns, who waived him in December. He started last season's finale for the Browns and completed 22 of 32 for 204 yards with a touchdown and interception in a 24-10 loss at Pittsburgh.
In exchange for Lewis, the Lions received linebacker Chris White, who appeared in 22 games for the Bills over the past two seasons, mostly on special teams.
The Bills needed another arm with rookie E.J. Manuel recovering from knee surgery and Kevin Kolb dealing with concussion-like symptoms after getting kneed in the back of the helmet in the Bills' preseason game Saturday against the Washington Redskins.
