The difference between blitzed and pressured.
Pretty freaking obvious I would think.

Nothing. This is pretty typical of Goff during his young career. A couple defenses give him big problems in a given season, so he turns into a turnover machine in those games.

Goff is only getting pressured on 15.5% of drop backs. That is the 5th lowest in the NFL. However he's been blitzed 142 times which is 5th HIGHEST in the league. So defenses are blitzing him a lot, but he's not getting pressured much at all. OL is doing a great job.

Pressures are defined as hurries + hits+ times sacked. 5th lowest in the NFL:

While I agree, the turnovers are happening every week even if he's having a good game, against Tampa for example, so IMO, yes Goff still has issues against certain defenses, but even when he's playing well, he is still susceptible to a couple of blunders a game IMHO.

When assessing Goff, I always try and remember the above.

Nice job on this, Jake. I do have a question though.

On the slide where you show the substantial drop off in RB reception production, you state that McVay is part of the problem since he has gone away from what Goff was comfortable with. I wonder if this is true.

Isn't it possible the routes drawn up have this baked in, but it is Goff himself who has chosen not to go there? Upon watching the all-22, I often see open RBs in the flat, but JG seems locked in on what he assumed would be open pre-snap.

Further, with all the stats you poured through to compile this analysis, is there data showing when a QB choses the wrong option? In other words, quantifying the ability to read the D pre and post snap?

Ooooooo this is a great point JackAttack. I had not thought of that. Sadly, I don't think there's a way to know. I tried to get as much info as I possibly could but that might be too far out of our grasp. Ugh. Very very good points though. If Goff is indeed ignoring his outlet then this really almost all falls on Goff...

He only has 6 TOs in the 8 games against teams that aren't SF or Miami. That's pretty typical for a QB. Like I said, this is normal Goff. We'll see what he does over the final 5 games.

That's all relative, what really matters is, can he lead the Los Angeles Rams to a Super Bowl Victory? I'm glad he's rich and has a hot girlfriend, but that does nothing for the Rams.

I have sat on the sidelines for a few days, reading all the Goff and McVay posts, and trying to figure out what has happened. And here's my take... First and foremost is that we no longer have Todd Gurley leading this team. After the Super Bowl, I actually posted that "this is Jared Goff's team now". Unfortunately, Goff has not been able to be consistent from week to week, and the offense still has no leader. The wide receivers are good, but if the defense can take away Woods and Kupp, what do the Rams have left? The running backs don't make many catches, and I'd put that on McVay. And speaking of the running backs... I don't mind the committee approach, but I was hoping that a leader would emerge at some point. It seems like one of them gets going, and then gets taken out. I would also put that on McVay. Can we please try some different plays? A few years ago, it seemed like McVay kept the defense on their toes... we never knew what was coming next. Now, it seems like the same old plays, over and over. And Goff? He is trying to do too much. He is forcing his throws, or overthinking the play, and he is making mental mistakes. IMHO... the team needs to get back to the running game, with passes mixed in (obviously). And can they please try a few screens or draw plays? Anything different, at this point. If we can't score, punt, and let the D do it's job. I would rather see a 20-17 Rams win, than a shit show of mistakes. The team is still very good, and playoffs are just around the corner... just need to try a couple of different approaches. PS - The Rams DO NOT need to get rid of Goff!!! They just need to help him.

He won't get back to his old self until they unfuck the backfield. Our RBs have struggled and it's no coincidence that his struggles began when Gurley first started to suffer his fall off that cliff. And it's continued since. If and when they get the backfield rolling I think he'll start to settle down a bit.

And in terms of the high end production he doesn't have enough weapons. Teams only need to focus their top two wideouts in scheme and they're not going to threaten anyone deep as they're possession types for the most part. So as much as everyone's been on his nuts about his play it's not all him. There are talent problems and mental mistake BS all over in the backfield that have made things tough on him too.

I agree with a lot of this. And we are running into the problem with this committee backfield. You establish a rhythm and then get taken out? How is that going to help. Personally, the Rams need to go back and watch how they beat the Dallas Cowboys in the postseason in 2018 that is the blueprint. Look at the way they used Todd Gurley and CJ Anderson? They need to go run-heavy, sell out to establish the run, open up PA and let Goff work with some help. Right now, teams are just begging Goff to beat them and he can't.
