On paper, the 49’ers look tough, real tough… Everywhere except QB.

As we know… In the 2021 NFL draft the 49’ers traded 3 first round picks to move up from #12 to #3 to select QB Trey Lance. To this point, Trey Lance appears a bust.

At the time, it was rumored they traded up for Mac Jones. Ultimately Mac Jones goes #15. Jones goes on to have a solid rookie year, earning a pro bowl appearance.

What if the 49’ers had taken Mac Jones?

How differently do they look right now as Super Bowl favorites?

How different would Mac Jones career look under Shanahan?

If the 49’ers picked Mac Jones that team would be a monster right now. He’s a good-enough QB who could be great in a situation with Shanahan.

One pick… that one pick. How different things would look.

I was convinced that they traded up to draft Mac Jones. I had a whole conspiracy theory ready to go about it and everything. Something around how Robert Saleh (former Whiner DC) had leaked that they weren't drafting Jones to Shanahan, etc... And instead... fact is stranger than fiction. Thankfully so! :D

They wining enough games without Mac Jones and I still don't think much of Jones, but if Kyle Shanahan was coaching him, he would most likely be Mac The Knife.

Mac Jones doesn't move the needle too much for me.

The real nightmare scenario would have been if they kept their pick in 2021, used it on Micah Parsons (who was selected in their original spot), and then traded for DeShaun Watson the following year.

He’d certainly fit right in. I have never seen so many clips of dirty play from a QB. What is it with this guy?

Talent-wise, you’re right, he could have solved a major issue—their only major issue. A rookie contract at QB allowing, say, $40 mil to throw at the rest of that roster?

Ouch! Of course they have that now ($$ spent on building the roster), just not the franchise QB to go with it.

Mac Jones isn't great but if they had taken him they might have a Super Bowl title right now and we would be all bitter about it with hundred page threads on McVay. Because imagine if he had lost that NFCC to Shanny on the heels of a thousand regular season losses. Talk about a history changer.

Shanny is the best in the league at making QBs look good, due to that consistent run game he schemes up. So it is the highest incompetence that his organization hasn't found him a better QB than what he's had. As iffy as Jones has looked of late, I have to think he would have been better than a lot of the guys we've seen start for them.

I'm just hoping he times out in SF and wants out of there soon. I am so fucking tired of that rat faced bastard.

Jones > Purdee > Lance

Jones isn’t all that good. But for Shanny and his offense, it would have been a problem. Jones would have been a much better pick.

But as Avenger said, they would have been WAY better simply picking BPA and not going QB. Too many teams force QB draft picks. Especially worst for a contending team to do so. Lucky that truly backfired on the 9ers big time

If they stood pat they woulda been able to draft the better quarterback and have the picks needed to trade for an elite quarterback. And possibly a Superbowl championship.

Now they have a championship caliber roster except in the more important position on the field. The position that just might prevent them from winning the championship. Then the window closes for them and they return to perpetual mediocrity.

Damn, I'm getting a schadenboner just thinking about it.

Mac Jones has a lot to prove. I am not sold on him either. But, he’s better than Lance. and… He’s better than Purdy.

If his rookie year was under Shanahan, no doubt he does better than he did in New England, right? And in NE he earned a pro bowl birth.

Idc about Mac Jones.

I’m just thrilled that we outbid the 9ers for Stafford.

Can you imagine that roster with Stafford?

Granted, they’d be blowing up the roster next year, but they’d likely have two Super Bowls

Us having a Lombardi and then NOT having two is amazing for us.

They'd still suck. Bailey Zappe is a much better quarterback than Jones.
