Does NFL Reddit Partnership Mean Streams Will Be Shut Down Like NBA's Soon?

The league has added Reddit Inc. as one of its new digital marketing platforms. This new collaboration is set to take advantage of the “Ask Me Anything” (AMA) feature that Reddit has become renowned for. Reddit will also feature video content featuring league players and personalities.

The AMA’s will allow players to express and showcase their unique viewpoints and personalities, according to NFL vice president of digital media business development Blake Stuchin.

“Generally, the participants will be representing themselves, first and foremost, and not necessarily the views of the NFL,” Stuchin said, per Sahil Patel of The Wall Street Journal. “But the bulk of the conversations we have seen on Reddit, and the bulk of what people generally want to talk about, is core football. Anything beyond that, it’s really no different than the comments we see on any user-generated or social platform.”

While access to players and new league-branded content may be exciting news, it begs the question of what will become of the Reddit page entitled NFLStreams.

The channel provides streams, often provided by Reddit users themselves, to any televised NFL game free of charge. It’s a particularly attractive option to football fans who don’t have the Sunday Ticket package (which remains exclusive to DirectTV) or have decided to cut the cord entirely.

With the NFL directly involved with Reddit, some have worried that NFLStreams could suffer a similar fate to its NBA counterpart. NBAStreams had over 400,000 subscribers tuning into the streams, mostly of games whose only national option was the NBA League Pass package.

NBAStreams was shut down in June for violation of Reddit’s “Repeat Copyright Infringement Policy”. Such a policy reads…
Our policy is to close the accounts of users, in appropriate circumstances, who have repeatedly been charged with copyright infringement. Sometimes a repeat infringement problem is limited to one user and we close just that user’s account. Other times, the problem pervades a whole subreddit community and we close the subreddit.
It’s great to see that the NFL is branching out a new, growing social media platform. Whether it spells the end of the channel remains to be seen. But with piracy prevention taking on a larger importance and role in today’s digital media world, it may be time for fans who relied on such a service to start worrying, especially with the NFL directly involved with Reddit.

The streams will migrate to 4chan or similar. Whilst there is a demand for them they will survive. The NFL will only eradicate them when it offers viewers their product at a price point that is realistic for all consumers and not just wealthy folks. See what happened with music, Napster of old and now what we have with spotify/apple music.

People will pay to stream, they wont pay thousands of dollars for sunday ticket. No idea why the NFL is so out of date with this.

I still have no idea why the NFL doesnt just do pay per view streams of individual games at a reasonable price. It seems like they are oblivious to the ability to take a huge piece of that market share.

Anyone know if its because of the current TV contracts they have? Maybe it will change when the current contract expires

It absolutely does have to do with the current contracts with directv and others. I can not wait for those to end so the NFL, hopefully, will get their head out of their ass and handle their services themselves. They would make a killing offering packages of all games, a specific team, or individual games at various rates to ANYONE who wants to pay. Not this fucked up, convoluted system they have now.

They're a league run by old men who don't have a great feel for emerging tech. Some day they will come up with a plan that better serves their fan base, but that probably won't happen until some top execs push it forward and spell it out for them.

Years back I bought the MLB ticket and the first game I tried to watch was blacked out (stationed in the high desert north of LA). Which is unconscionable IMO given my drive was over 2 hours with average traffic to take the family to see a game. I was so angry that I basically quit watching baseball and haven't really followed it since outside of checking box scores and the playoffs.

These leagues need to stop and realize that the archaic blackout rules need to change. When fans pay for a product and it's not delivered due to what I can only term owner greed, that's enough to deter a good chunk of them to either vote with their feet or dedicate themselves to illegal streaming.

IMO if the NFL wants to change that, they need to set a fair price and ability for fans to watch individual games, and treat that purchase on equal par with buying a ticket to the game. Add in some extra functionality for the ticket, like locker room camera post-game, post-game analysis, etc., and they will find a lot more of that money they are losing coming their way.

I had that same experience with the MLS. I don’t have cable and I just wanted to follow the Timbers, MLS live blacked everything out in Portland, not because the game wasn't sold out, bit because it was a local broadcast. I couldn’t ever watch the games and said screw it, I don’t need to be a soccer fan then.

It’s simply asinine that a league trying to truly establish a large fan base would ever do that! All the leagues need to get their head outta the past or we will forever “steal” viewing of the product

Yeah and the funniest thing about all this is that the electronic tickets SHOULD BE their biggest gameday income, given that it's not driven by seat availability and the fact a team should be able to sell millions of "tickets" at a very reasonable (i.e. LOW) price or even lower in a bundle.

They're losing money hand over fist due to this. And their response? Well they think they need to lock down a streaming hub by opening a business association. Idjits lol. There will always be another streaming hub. Fix the problem.

No joke. Lets say I don’t go to a single game or buy merch in a season. Maybe I go to a sports bar for a game or two, that means if I was only watching Rams games I would stream 14 games. Price it between $5 and $10 and the NFl makes $140 easy.

$10 a game for single game strean and $8 a game for a full season ticket sounds about right to me.

There is actually a CA law suit currently going on, which just might make it possible to get individual PPV for your favorite team/s. There is an Anti-Trust lawsuit that is picking up steam because of the fact that the current A-T laws do not cover DirecTV's version of Sunday ticket.

It's got to play out in court, but sentiment in the legal world is that DTV may just be forced to offer "team by team" packages, that the individual teams themselves have the rights to. ... or something along those lines. But I read the article in ... Forbes (I think) about 2 weeks ago.
