PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Shaw Interviews 49ers' Mike Holmgren January 03, 1992|TIM KAWAKAMI
With Chuck Knox still the No. 1 candidate to replace John Robinson as coach, the Rams interviewed Mike Holmgren, the San Francisco 49ers' offensive coordinator, in Los Angeles late Thursday.

Holmgren, perhaps the hottest head coaching candidate in a league with a record number of openings this year, met with Ram Executive Vice President John Shaw, but could not be reached for comment.

Holmgren, 43, has already interviewed with the Green Bay Packers, is scheduled to meet with the Pittsburgh Steelers in San Francisco today, and has plans to visit the Minnesota Vikings and the Indianapolis Colts early next week.

The 49ers, as part of the three-year, $275,000-a-year package they gave Holmgren after the 1989 season, have the right to refuse Holmgren permission either to interview for or to accept any head coaching job in the NFL.

Although the Rams believe that the 49ers would not stand in Holmgren's way if he were offered the job with their division rival, 49er President Carmen Policy has said it would be very difficult to allow Holmgren to take the Ram job.

Knox remains the Rams' No. 1 candidate, but he is exploring other options, including an interview today with the Colts. Knox is reported to be a top choice of the Packers--along with Holmgren--if Bill Parcells should turn them down.

Meanwhile, Buddy Ryan, who fell off the top of the Rams' list recently, has been told by Tampa Bay owner Hugh Culverhouse that he is the No. 1 candidate for the Buccaneers' job, after Parcells pulled out of a proposed $6.5-million deal with them.

Two other longshot Ram candidates--former Cincinnati Bengal Coach Sam Wyche and former Packer Coach Lindy Infante--also are also on Culverhouse's interview schedule.

And in 1978 we had our choice of Bill Walsh or Don Coryell.

I just think of two things: Isaiah Pead over Russell Wilson and Rokevious Watkins over Danny Trevathan (who I was screaming at the Rams to take). Everything else turned out good.

Speaking of what could have been... http://espn.go.com/blog/st-louis-rams/tag/_/name/zack-martin

We almost moved back up last year to grab Martin. May have seemed risky at the time but apparently Snisher knew what they were talking about when they said they wanted him. Our only problem for this season would've been resigning Barksdale and picking up a center. Still wouldn't trade Donald for him but it would've been brilliant to get him at 17 last year. I guess Hindsight is 20/20

Yeah, true, but we likely wouldn't have a #1 pick this year if we did, esstentially, I think the deal would have been we get their #1 and not a #1 this year and the price for swapping would have been our #2, so in hindsight, Martin would essentially have been our 2015 #1 and no Joyner . . . count me in.

Not to mention no Joyner, but we still would've had our 5th rounder which would've allowed a better QB than Gilbert. Who unfortunately now has more Superbowl rings than every Rams player combined....

Yes Garrett Gilbert has a ring

Tell me which QB's in this years class (aside from Winston and Marriotta) who would have been better than Gilbert with a year in our system? And with a year if NFL experience under his belt?

I don't think anyone

It was a bad move to give up on this kid

Would have been nice to see what he had in his 2nd year through preseason but it is over and done with now.

They need to accept 3 roster spots on QB until they find the right guy. That 3rd spot needs to be the best developmental option each year.

Carrol Rosenbloom went with George Allen
Ok Makes sense in the timeline sort of thing. I rather talk to somebody than just googling things that have to do with my team. Thanks....

@Boffo97 is going to harass you for saying 3 roster spots for QB's.

I admit I've been adamant about that the past couple of season, but it no longer seems to be worth the fight. I think the Rams are going to go with 2 spots for QBs. Without the 3rd QB exception, it really isn't worth keeping a guy on roster that, if he has to play, your season is likely over anyway.

I'm going to continue to poke you about this until the Rams have 3 QB's on the roster week one, then I am going to lord it over you each and every day of the entire season.

True. But the reason they need to invest that futures spot on their roster is to allow for development of a QB with talent since so many college offenses aren't producing guys who are ready. It's either that or F a season up right when you know a franchise guy will be available but that's gonna come with a coaching firing.

Winning franchises, IMO, will devote that spot for futures development at the most important position. Think of it as an investment in the future, IMO.

Not to mention that they are already paying Johhny Hekker...
