NFL Week 9 power rankings: Rams continue to rise during bye
By: Cameron DaSilva

gettyimages-865106418.jpg

The Los Angeles Rams weren’t in action this past weekend, taking their bye week after playing the Cardinals in London. They stood pat at 5-2, while being forced to watch the Seahawks win and take over first place in the NFC West.

Seeing their first-place lead wasn’t great, obviously, but there are still nine more games for the Rams to overtake their division rivals. And, while they were resting and taking a week off, they managed to jump one spot in USA TODAY’s power rankings.

The Rams moved up from No. 7 to 6, which is their highest position of the season.

The Seahawks are one spot ahead of the Rams in the power rankings after beating the Texans 41-38 in a wild shootout on Sunday. With both teams sitting at 5-2, and Seattle owning the tiebreaker, this division is going to come down to the final weeks.

As for the rest of the NFC West, the Cardinals stayed at 27, while the 49ers remained at 31.

7. Los Angeles Rams

Last Week's Ranking: 6

The Los Angeles Rams have playmakers on both sides of the football. They also have two of the best coaches in head coach Sean McVay and defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. This might be the best coaching combo in the NFL.

The Rams offense is almost unstoppable. Second-year quarterback Jared Goff is playing well and capable of making a few big plays each game. He isn't in Carson Wentz's class, but he does give L.A. a chance to win every week.

Because of the coaching of McVay and the weapons around Goff, the Rams are hard to stop. It's no longer a question of whether L.A. is for real. The Rams are the real deal, and we're going to see that all year long.

# 2: RAMS

Flying silently -- although never on Twitter -- is the work of defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.Broaching such hot topics as Medicare can only be surpassed by the performance of the defense he directs. That's why the Rams are so high. The upside of the defense means this team can get even better.

After allowing 26.3 points per game over the first four contests of the season, the defense has shut the door, giving up a meager 11.0 ppg in the past three outings. Against the run, Phillips' unit is allowing 85.3 rush yards per game since Week 5. Before Week 5, that figure was at 151.2. Oh, and the defense is primarily responsible for winning the last two games, too.

Rams They come off their bye with a long road trip to play the Giants. But they've had some long ones already, including at London two weeks ago. Are they ready to push for a division title?

Correct me if I'm wrong. But since we have the same record, but we have lost to them head 2 head, doesn't that put them in first? Like if the season ended today, they would win the division right?

The season cant end today. Its rhetoric that gets repeated but is completely inaccurate
So until it does, they are tied.
Had they played both games, and lost them both, that would be different.
Bottom line is that the Rams control their own destiny. Win the rest of their games and Seattle cant win the division

I believe that's correct, no?

"QB Russell Wilson is on track for a career year - a good thing given the issues Houston exposed on defense and Seattle's ongoing inability to run ball."

Sounds a little like smoke and mirrors... sustainable? We'll see.

The Rams are off to one of their best starts in years, but they need to cut down on turnovers in order to keep winning. They've fumbled 15 times this season (lost eight of them), which is tied for fourth-most in the NFL, and have a turnover margin of zero.
Leave it to ESPN to give the only left-handed compliment... sort of.

Only if the season could magically end today. Can it?
Of course not... but does that mean any team can be described as being in first place (until the season is over with, that is)?

No they are not, the Seahawks win the tie breaker. So the Rams need to go a Game Up to be in the lead.

Assume the Rams win the game against the Seahawks, but end up tied with them a the end of the Season, then it will move on to Division Win Loss as a Tie Breaker. The Seahawks are 2-0 in the Division tot he Rams 2-1.

Assume they lose against the Seahawks and end up with the tied W/L record the Seahawks win the Division.

So based on those reasons, the Seahawks are #1 and the Rams #2 in the 'race' to win the division.

There is no tie.

The Rams offense is not unstoppable. Do they watch the games? The offense is much better but, far from unstoppable. They are moving the ball and getting lots of field goals. I'm surprised the turnover ratio is even at 15 take aways and 15 give aways. They are benefiting from the defense and special teams scoring and getting good field position. I wish the Rams offense was unstoppable or close to it. It's really more of solid play in all three phases of the game.

And here comes another one from Mike Foolio over at PFT.

Week Eight power rankings
Posted by Mike Florio on October 31, 2017

1. Eagles (7-1; No. 1): If the Dolphins were trying to send a message to Jay Ajayi by trading him to the best team in football, he’s probably not upset about receiving it.

2. Patriots (6-2; No. 2): “The Patriots might choose Jimmy Garoppolo over Tom Brady.”

3. Steelers (6-2; No. 3): Today, JuJu Smith-Schuster supplants Martavis Bryant. Eventually, he’ll supplant Antonio Brown.

4. Chiefs (6-2; No. 4): If the Denver offense wasn’t so bad, the Kansas City offense wouldn’t have been nearly good enough to deliver a win on Monday night.

5. Seahawks (5-2; No. 5): It’s nice to see the Seahawks finally admit that it’s important to have good offensive linemen.

6. Vikings (6-2; No. 6): Isn’t the team hosting the Super Bowl supposed to be jinxed?

7. Bills (5-2; No. 8): They can make it to the playoffs, but can they win once they get there?

8. Rams (5-2; No. 7): The arrival of Duane Brown in Seattle will make it even harder for the Rams to topple Seattle.

9. Saints (5-2; No. 10): When are we going to not be surprised by what the Saints are doing?

10. Panthers (5-3; No. 12): Cam Newton says he doesn’t want to be Debbie Downer, but he reserves the right to periodically be Petey McPoutenpout.

11. Falcons (4-3; No. 14): It rained so hard on the Falcons in New Jersey on Sunday that their stadium is leaking.

12. Texans (3-4; No. 11): Few losses in recent years have been more encouraging for a franchise than Houston’s loss in Seattle.

13. Washington (3-4; No. 13): They lost on Sunday, but they won on Monday when Kirk Cousins lost a major potential suitor for 2018.

14. Titans (4-3; No. 15): They’ll need to perform better than they did in Cleveland, if they hope to keep pace in the AFC South.

15. Jaguars (4-3; No. 17): Hopefully the bye week broke the good-week-bad-week streak.

16. Cowboys (4-3; No. 18): The Ezekiel Elliott suspension could keep the Cowboys out of the playoffs, and get the Commissioner out of a job.

17. Ravens (4-4; No. 27): Given how well they perform against the Patriots and Dolphins, the Ravens should petition for relocation to the AFC East.

18. Dolphins (4-3; No. 9): That the Dolphins are 4-3 despite a pair of shutouts in which they gave up 60 total points is the best evidence for a league that will continue to be completely unpredictable for the rest of the year, and hopefully beyond.

19. Lions (3-4; No. 16): The highest-paid quarterback can’t buy touchdowns without a running game.

20. Chargers (3-5; No. 19): Dan Orlovsky feels bad for Travis Benjamin.

21. Raiders (3-5; No. 20): A season-saving win followed by a season-jeopardizing win is no way to go through the middle portion of a season.

22. Packers (4-3; No. 22): It’s good that they used the bye week to bolster the roster through trades and free-agency signings. Wait, this is the Packers we’re talking about.

23. Bengals (3-4; No. 25): Being just good enough to beat the Colts at home isn’t nearly good enough to avoid major changes after the season.

24. Broncos (3-4; No. 21): Maybe John Elway should just play quarterback.

25. Bears (3-5; No. 23): They were dressed like the Super Bowl XX Bears, and they were playing in the same stadium. But that wasn’t Tony Eason and the ’85 Patriots on the other side of the line.

26. Jets (3-5; No. 24): “Hey, why didn’t we get a chance to give up way too much to get Jimmy Garoppolo?”

27. Buccaneers (2-5; No. 26): They’ve never signed a quarterback they drafted to a second contract. Why do I suddenly have a feeling this will continue?

28. Colts (2-6; No. 28): Suck for Luck. Suck with Luck. Suck without Luck. Just plain suck.

29. Cardinals (3-4; No. 29): The good news is they won’t have to face Jimmy Garoppolo this week. The better news is they’re playing the 49ers.

30. Giants (1-6; No. 30): It sounds like coach Ben McAdoo and G.M. Jerry Reese used the bye week to cycle through the various stages of grief and arrive at acceptance.

31. 49ers (0-8; No. 31): “Jimmy’s new in town. Jimmy doesn’t see as many people in the stands as Jimmy used to.”

32. Browns (0-8; No. 32): The jersey with all the names of the failed quarterbacks who have played for the franchise can now be supplemented with a jersey displaying the names of all the franchise quarterbacks they’ve failed to acquire.

In this scenario where we're ignoring the other divisional games they would have to play (you did it got the same of simplicity and I understand that) wouldn't the Rams be 3-1 to their 2-1 because we beat them in the second game?

You're right. There is no tie.

Seattle did indeed take over first place in the current NFC west standings.
The Rams are listed 2nd in the NFC west standings at NFL.com.

upload_2017-10-31_9-25-22.png

They are tied in overall record, behind in head to head, behind in division record, and behind in Conference record.

Division standings have rules, beginning of season, middle of season, end of season.

I agree that the tie-breakers mean nothing as far as progressing to post season until week 17.
I also saw further down where you replied that the Rams control their own destiny. That is correct. If they finish 14-2 that means they will have beat the Seahawks later in the season, and they will have the best overall record. Same can be said for the Seahawks. They also control their own destiny.

They are in first place in the NFC west.
The only thing we tie them in is Overall Record.

Go Rams.

There is no tie.
Seven or eight games into the season, with one more head to head, there IS a tie. Put it this way, if Seattle or New England, or Dallas (you know. One of the mainstream deemed “beautiful teams” ) if they had the same record as a division rival at mid season, they would be described as “tied for the lead.” They would not invoke the tie breakers. The media has done it in the past. They will do it in the future. There is imperical evidence that bears this out.

We all know how tie breakers work, but thanks for the reminder. Again, if we had won the Seahawks game and were tied with them at this point, the media would say, “the Seahawks are tied for first.” Guaranteed.

He isn't in Carson Wentz's class, but he does give L.A. a chance to win every week.
I know what you are saying Primetime, but I disagree. Goff is behind Wentz in his NFL experience, but he lives in the same neighborhood. Jared has the gate code. It is a fluid thing. Check back in a few weeks.

Correct me if I'm wrong. But since we have the same record, but we have lost to them head 2 head, doesn't that put them in first? Like if the season ended today, they would win the division right?
Again. See above. Why do we all steer into the media narrative so easily? The Rams are tied for first place.
