Giants Share Inside Look At Draft Trade With Rams

The Los Angeles Rams were busy on the phones during the 2023 NFL Draft, making five trades across the event. Of those trades, the one in the third-round with the New York Giants might be the most notable.

L.A. moved back 16 spots in the trade, sending the No. 73 pick to New York for the No. 89 and No. 128 picks. The Giants drafted receiver Jalin Hyatt with their newly-acquired pick, while the Rams turned their picks into defensive lineman Kobie Turner and quarterback Stetson Bennett.

Recently, the Giants released a behind-the-scenes video of their draft war room, and it featured an inside look at this trade. As it turns out, the trade started with a simple text from Giants coach Brian Daboll to Rams coach Sean McVay.

"Let me text [Sean] McVay," Daboll said. "I'll text McVay like he did yesterday."

The note about McVay texting the previous day, during the first round, is particularly interesting. Obviously, there was no deal between these two teams during the first round, but Daboll seemingly implies that there were discussions. There were rumors suggesting the Rams wanted to move up into the first round, so the Giants may have been a potential trade partner.

As for the trade that actually happened, the Giants wanted Hyatt and were determined to get him. With the Rams wanting to acrue as many picks as possible, they were happy to pick up the phone.

"Dabs [Daboll] is like 'Hey, what if I text McVay?' and I was like 'Yeah, go ahead,'" Giants general manager Joe Schoen said. "So we typed in the terms and Dabs sent it off to coach McVay and eventually they called us back."

While these players have yet to see the field, it appears both teams got what they wanted in the deal.

Giants get Jalin Hyatt and the Rams use the Giants 4th round pick for Stetson Bennett. When we look back years later, who will win the trade?

You also have to consider (guess) who the Rams could have selected between #73 and #89.

For example, Tucker Kraft went at #78, right after the Rams drafted Byron Young.

Personally, I will always wonder how far Stetson Bennett would have fallen. It will haunt me.

Not that far IMHO, many QB's went off the board that round. Quite frankly the Rams liked Bennett quite a bit and even hid their feelings on him, so I am fine that was their guy. Now I might not agree, but if that is your guy go and draft him and I do believe Bennett would not have been available in the 5th.

You might be right; and I hope Bennett works-out really well. I have no idea, so no opinion.

Personally, I watch, read and listen to everything NFL but absolutely no college football.

When the off-season comes around, the Draft is important to me but I have no frame of reference regarding the draft-prospects, so I watch, read and listen to everything and everyone for about two months leading-up to the Draft. I don't recall seeing, reading or hearing a single comment or analysis Pre-Draft that had Stetson Bennett as anything other than a very late round pick or undrafted free agent.

Now that does not mean the Rams were wrong to draft him at #128, or that there weren't other teams ready to select him in the 4th round. I may have missed something in my pre-draft-efforts (my wife often reminds me that I am far from perfect). Only saying that I was familiar with every quarterback drafted, and every player the Rams selected (except for Desjuan Johnson) but was completely surprised by the Bennett pick.

This is something to revisit in 2/3 years. I like Bennett for his age, his completion percentage 68.6% which is top 10 and winning 2 national championships. Getting a guy in the 4th with that pedigree is not a reach. Again within 3 years we will know the book on Bennett.

Or the Rams had their target firmly on who they took and nothing would have changed. We all know before the draft that Snead was talking about adding that 4th round pick which we did.

It seems to me that you have a frame of reference (s) as you just stated.

It's probably better not to be tied to where players are slated to go before the draft. The Rams had him rated higher and we don't know what all the other teams had him rated. At least you are able to joke about it.

Rams needed a backup QB and they drafted the one they liked in the 4th round, and how much of a longshot he is to ever start a game, he's ours and did QB his team to two National Championships.
