I love the ones from Social Security. ME: "Can you explain how you got my cell phone number? Because I know for a fact that I have never provided that number to any federal agency. "

That’s crazy that there are people scamming like that.
On the bright side, it turns out that I have a distant relative in Africa that I didn’t know about, and apparently they left me a huge some of money in the will!! How lucky am I?

I had one of those social security scammers call me on my work phone, I asked him what name and ss# they were investigating so I can stop using it. The rude fucker hung up on me.

I got a call from someone claiming to be my insurance agent. Said he needed to update my information. I told "Tell me what you have and I'll tell you if it's right ". He hung up on me.

Another called me and said my social security account was compromised and I needed to correct it by giving them my number. I told him "Do you really expect me to believe that?" Hung up on me again.

So I kept getting phone calls for final expense insurance. So one day I talked with a guy and he said an agent would call me. Well, he did. And we talked for about an hour and a half. Called me back a couple of days later with some quotes. Told him he had my age wrong. I'm 62, not 42. So he had to redo them all. So I strung him along for about 2 weeks. Meantime all the insurance calls stopped. So I asked him about them. He denied it. But it's funny that when you thought I was buying all the calls stopped. Still denied it. Then I told him if I needed life insurance I could write myself since I"m an insurance agent. He didn't believe me so I gave him my license number. Haven't heard from him since.

That’s what we always do. We string them along and keep them on the phone as long as possible. That way, they aren’t ripping somebody else off. It always ends up with us saying, “ How’s your mom doing? I figure she must be sore cause we had her in the chicken wing last night.” I don’t know why that pisses them off so much.

A recent article in the paper was explaining phone scams and how the scammers can make their numbers look local, so that you answer the phone because you may know the person or recognize the number. I look at the photo and it has my bitchy next door neighbors name on caller ID along with her number. Of all people its the one that lives behind me.

I work for 1-800-Medicare
You wouldn't believe how many elderly fall for these scams. They call us saying they gave out their Medical Information.
They also call about non Medicare scams too like Social Security.
One place you can report them to is the Federal Trade Commission

But I cannot believe how many fall for it.

I think this is a George Carlin quote..
Imagine how stupid the average person is.
Now realize that half of the people are dumber than that.

The number of calls I get from people who have been or are about to be scammed is crazy.

My favorite is the guys who are talking to some “girl” online somewhere when all of a sudden - the girl turns out to be 14 and then “dad” calls threatening the police and saying that money for her counseling may make it all go away.

My ex roomate fell for this and sent them money like $800

I think it is more fear than stupidity that gets the older folks roped in.
My mother gets all stressed out now about things that would not have phased her 20 years ago.
I try to tell her to just stick to this simple rule.....any unsolicited call or blocked number....do not answer.
Simple.

iPhones have a feature that allow you to send all calls from people not in your contact list be sent to voice mail.

That only becomes a problem if you're wanting to do one of those "if you don't want to remain on hold, punch in the phone number where you can be reached and we'll call you back. You will not lose your place in line."

So yeah, if the price of not having my phone blow up is having to wait on hold the few times I need to... well worth it.

I dunno if android has a similar feature.

And just got another 1 today that I've gotten before.

Your relative or even me/you is going to be convicted of a felony, arrested in this Certain State if you don't answer pay now.

This is 1 that will leave voicemails etc etc.

Give an example. They called saying all this stuff about an x brother in law, 1st time ever got 1 of these.

What they didn't know is I hated the dude, told them give me a number, they did and called baby sis.

She told me they already had called both my niece and nephew, WTF how did they get all those phone numbers relating to him. ????

Hell I had not even called the guy in years and that was for a job, give him work and feed the kids, pay the bills, stuff like that.

Amazing how these folks get all this info.

Food for thought, all phone solicitors are required to follow Federal Do Not Call laws. Of course there is a ton of non compliance, but be sure that you are registered on the Do Not Call list, it's simple to do.
Cell phones were added to the registry a bunch of years back and many people think they are on it, but may not be.
In any event, here is the link:
