Vikings” has been renewed for Season 6 at History before the show’s fifth season has even premiered, the network announced Tuesday.

History has ordered a 20 episode sixth season of the drama series, with production slated to begin this fall in Ireland. The first half of Season 5 will premiere on Nov. 29, with the second half airing in 2018. In addition, series regular Katheryn Winnick will make her directorial debut in Season 6, helming one episode.

The Season 5 cast includes series regulars Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who joined this season as Bishop Heahmund, along with Winnick, Gustaf Skarsgård, Alexander Ludwig, Alex Høgh Andersen, Jordan Smith and Marco Ilso.

Michael Hirst created the series and also serves as its sole writer and executive producer. Morgan O’Sullivan of World 2000, Sheila Hockin, John Weber of Take 5 Productions, Sherry Marsh, Alan Gasmer, and James Flynn also serve as executive producers. Arturo Interian serves as the executive in charge of production for History. “Vikings” is an international Irish/Canadian co-production by World 2000 and Take 5 Productions. MGM Television serves as the worldwide distributor outside of Ireland and Canada. “Vikings” is produced in association with Corus Entertainment.

“It has been my pleasure and my privilege to work with History and our partner MGM over five seasons and 69 episodes of ‘Vikings.’ Now we are ready to begin production of a 20 episode season six that will deliver a huge and unexpected revelation to our audience,” said Hirst. “There are many reasons why I love this show, not least for the commitment and creativity of everyone involved in making it, but perhaps even more important is the spirit that drives this production – one of the happiest, most collaborative and most authentic productions I have ever been involved with. And so we sail on.”

Across all platforms, Season 4 of “Vikings” averaged 7.8 million viewers per episode. It is also a top-five drama across ad supported cable and averaged 4.1 million total viewers last season in Live+7.

“‘Vikings’ has creatively sailed to monumental lengths. The series has evolved from early raids in England, to the heart-stopping death of Ragnar Lothbrok, to the fierce battles of the Great Heathen Army, and now we’ll see the sons of Ragnar exploring and conquering the known world,” said Eli Lehrer, executive vice president of programming for History. “Michael Hirst has only scratched the surface of his epic saga. We look forward to continuing our partnership with one of the greatest writers in this era of Peak TV and entertaining our viewers with 40 new episodes over the next two seasons.”

We haven't even started the 20 episode season 5 that they have scheduled and they've already booked another 20 episode season 6! The big question still looms in how will the show advance without Ragnar but this could be a very good thing!

Love it. Especially in fall/winter when it's dark outside and inside on a UHD TV.

So many stories, I wonder how Floki will get killed off (natural causes...in battle?)

You got Rollo and his family, Harald, and quest to become king (potential feud with his brother for cockblocking him?), Lagertha's she-Viking army taking over Kattegat.

And of course the spawn of Ragnar running around acting like idiots.

Can't wait!

Yeah with a 1 hour episode to follow it. It was a good episode but I was worn out by the end.

They didn't do a good job in communicating the time. I didn't know it was a 2 hour special either.

Lot of good storyline seeds planted though. Looking forward to Bjorn's and Floki's adventures.

And Ivar...fuckin hell man. DEMENTED.

yeah, but the way he killed the Bishop was almost identical to Kahl Drago killing Danis brother in GoT

huh?

Watched the Lagertha special from 8-9 (Eastern) then watched an hour of Ep.1 from 9 to about 10, and recorded the rest. Was there another episode on after Ep 1?

So if you haven't noticed by now what they did it was confusing. They played episodes 1 and 2 together then when that was over they replayed episode 2. At least that's what my DVR recorded.

Katheryn Winnick is an impressive and interesting woman. Not only is she beautiful, she is an accomplished martial artist. She started in Tae Kwon Do at age seven and at seventeen I think she said, she opened her first school. She eventually had three schools , by age 21. She trained Stars for fighting in action films.

There are some YouTube videos I watched on her. Some were of her fighting. She is Damn good. She could have been a better Blackwidow with her skill. It is interesting that she looks a bit different from her Laegertha character. In real life she looks smaller, more elegant and a bit different even in her face. Check her out, http://katherynwinnick.com Winnick wasn't initially an actress. She has a degree in Kinesiology. But when you see her dressed up she is every bit the starlet.

Her first language was Ukranian and her real name is Katrusia Anna Vinitska. She comes across as a very real genuine person in her interviews. I think I'm in love.

I can't imagine anyone other than Scarlet Johansson as Widow. Maybe b/c she's so established and does the cold/unemotional role so well. But I really wanted Katheryn to be Captain Marvel instead of Brie Larson. Oh well.

Last episode was really good. I liked the battle and it set the stage for the upcoming Viking Civil War that's about to happen.

This is the first season where I'm disappointed. Too much set up, and now it's becoming a soap opera as second story lines. New characters aren't that likeable and some story lines seem like such a waste of time.

Although Ivar has been hilariously evil. And in tonight's episode we finally see Alfred emerge from what his grandpappy King Ecbert fortold.

I loved the first half of this season but I hated the last episode. I understood what they were trying to do but I didn't need it to understand how emotional it would be for brothers to battle brothers, girlfriends to kill girlfrienfs, etc... A potentially great episode felt long and drug on.

A few peeves. Why would Rollo loan Hvitserk his army? WTF? He could lose a lot of good men. And why favor Hvitserk over Ubbe, Bjeorn and Lagertha? It makes no sense for a French army to fight on the side of Ivar or any Viking for that matter.

I know artist's license allows them to do as they wished but Hafdan was a historical figure for the Vikings. He was also a Lothbrook but that aside I'd prefer if he had escaped death. Ubbe seems to be on the correct historical path. He does not become King of Kattegat but he does become King of something....Norway
