Report: CBS will make aggressive offer to try to keep Tony Romo

Much has been made of ESPN’s impending efforts to convince Tony Romo to join the network, but it does not sound like CBS will be letting him go without a fight.

According to Andrew Marchand of the New York Post, CBS is aware that Romo will demand a “huge increase” in salary and is prepared to compete aggressively to prevent him from leaving the network. The network wants to keep Romo, in part because they do not want to have to hire a new lead analyst to pair with Jim Nantz in a year in which CBS will be broadcasting the Super Bowl.

CBS is confident, as they have the contractual right to match any offer made by another network in the Romo sweepstakes.

Reports indicate that Romo could be offered north of $10 million by ESPN. The onus would be on CBS to match that, but it sounds like they might be motivated to do so.

Yeah, well, after his continue dissing of the Rams, although they deserved it against Baltimore, I don't like him either, but Tessitore too, even though he's actually from my neck of the woods, I'm hoping they go with Bob Wischusen who is under contract with ESPN gets the Monday gig, he's an amazing play by play guy.

Monday night football is only watchable with the volume turned off with the current announcing team. ESPN needs some help bad. They went from bad to much worse. Anything would be an improvement.

Lost in the layered NFL media free agent rumor mill lies Jay Cutler, former Pro Bowl quarterback and current husband to reality television star Kristin Cavallari. Cutler recently met with both ESPN and CBS about a potential future in broadcasting, The Big Lead has learned from multiple sources with knowledge of the news.

This isn't Cutler's first foray into a potential broadcasting career. In 2017, FOX signed Cutler to serve in its No. 2 NFL broadcast team with Kevin Burkhardt and Charles Davis. Of course, that never happened because Cutler returned to the NFL -- to the Dolphins -- a month before the season began.

Since then, Cutler's name has essentially only come up in the reality television world. Albeit the headlines have come quite often, and entertainingly, from his wife's show, Very Cavallari.

Between Super Bowl week and the offseason, it's common practice for networks to meet with former players interested in becoming analysts. As was the case in 2017, media sources are bullish on Cutler, often referring to his distinctive mind, personality, and reactions as reasons he would be a good fit.

If a network believes in Cutler, there could be several fits. If it's not in the booth, the former Vanderbilt Commodore could be brought in for studio work. Networks are consistently in the market for former quarterbacks with name recognition, some with far less interesting personalities than Cutler.

Much like with the players, the media side of the NFL projects to be busy this offseason. Recently-retired linebacker Luke Kuechly also took meetings with several networks, according to sources.

Aside from former-player news, ESPN is exploring the idea of tweaking NFL Live. While the talks are in the early stages, sources say the network would like to give the show more juice moving forward.

But as everyone who has read a sports media report in the past 12 months is aware of, the pivotal dominion this offseason is Tony Romo. ESPN will go all-out to lure the superstar broadcaster, but CBS remains, at the moment, the favorite to re-sign him.

Tony Romo bidding war reportedly surpasses $15 million

Tony Romo’s first contract to broadcast NFL games for CBS paid him $3 million a year. He’ll be making a lot more than that going forward.

According to Clay Travis of Outkick the Coverage, bidding for Romo between ESPN and CBS has already surpassed $15 million per year, and it may approach $20 million before negotiations conclude. This figure would make Romo the highest-paid sports announcer in American history.

Both networks are trying to send a message by signing Romo. ESPN wants to retain its "Monday Night Football" package with better games and get into the Super Bowl rotation. CBS wants to keep Romo, show that it's committed to the NFL and not want to have to find a new commentator to work next year’s Super Bowl. CBS has the right to match any offer made to Romo.

We had previously heard that Romo could get between $10 million and $14 million. If this reporting is correct, he has already surpassed that and may well come close to doubling the initial low-end estimate. The only question is how high the two networks are willing to go before one concedes defeat.
