I only pray for our kids that one day they can understand the beautiful concept of an album and how it worked to intertwine the songs and take you up and down and on a aural trip.

I'm going to start with;
Blind Melon's first album.
You'll be amazed at the genius of these guys after a couple listens.

Boston has not been inducted into the Rock and Roll HOF. That, in my book, makes their iconic debut album underrated.

Mastodon's Crack the Skye. Holy shit is that a great album. Ethereal, visceral, tells a story in every part, has a sad reason for the album name (the drummer and backup vocalist, Brann Dailor, had a sister named Skye who committed suicide at fourteen, and it affected him majorly. So they decided to name an album after her), etc.

Really, anything by Mastodon is amazing, but Crack the Skye is just...there isn't a bad song on there.

I wouldn’t call any Boston album underrated.

They’re all great and everybody knows it. Lol

I still struggle in a world without Lane Staley, but Black Gives Way to Blue is a fantastic album by Alice In Chains.
Jerry Cantrell is just brilliant.

Okay…you want something more obscure…

How about:

The Forgotten Arm - Aimee Mann
Loma Vista - Family of the Year
You Were Here - Sarah Harmer

My wife for some reason does not like Boston at all but she likes Kansas - and since I am not a music connoisseur, I frequently mix those two up. It just blows my mind that shes one but not the other.

Both Tower of Power and War aren’t in the Rock & Roll hall of fame neither. Damn shame.
I listened to both as a teenager. Sparkling in the Sand was the first slow dance I ever had with an actual girl. One who turned out to be my girlfriend for a few months. I think I was around 14. We listened to War while smoking joints and black light posters on the wall.

I don't know if it's underrated or just not as liked by people I know but I'll nominate Standing Hampton by Sammy Hagar

Master of Reality by Black Sabbath.

Had the lyrics printed on the back of the cover and each song told a story.
Very underated....

concept of an album
On the one hand, this album went platinum back in the day so it might be hard to call it underrated.
On the other hand, I don't think anyone under 30 has heard of this - it probably was a bit of a flash in the pan.

This one is like the 8th best selling album of the 21st century, but doesn't fit the demo of this board, ergo "underrated".
Lyrically, the album contains elements including depressing emotions, anger, and recovery. Explaining to MTV, Bennington said: "We don't talk about situations, we talk about the emotions behind the situations. Mike and I are two different people, so we can't sing about the same things, but we both know about frustration and anger and loneliness and love and happiness, and we can relate on that level."
