Rams Head Coach Jeff Fisher – Post-Practice – 12/15/15
(On Buccaneers DT Gerald McCoy and LB Lavonte David)
“Lavonte is a sideline to sideline player that just makes a lot of plays. He’s kind of like (LB) Alec (Ogletree) in that he just comes up with the ball. He’ll force a fumble or make an interception or just make a big play when they need it. Then McCoy is just a relentless rusher. He’s inside, you know where he’s going to be but he’s hard to lock. He’s just an outstanding player. Their defense is playing really well. We’re going to have our hands full.”
(On if the Tampa Bay defense is mostly Cover 2)
“Yeah, they’re doing a few different things beyond that, but it’s not like they’re one of those exotic defenses that try to fool your quarterback. They beat you by putting people in position, on their toes, ready to break and then collapsing the pocket real quick and the ball has to come out. That’s how his defenses have always been.”
(On the possibility of LB Alec Ogletree coming off Injured/Reserve Designated to Return)
“I think, yeah, we’re considering taking him off and activating his practice time. He’s got 21 days, which we’re running out of time. We’re thinking about doing that on Friday.”
(On if they would activate Ogletree in hopes of getting him in a game)
“He’s not quite ready. He’s close. The goal would be to see if he’d be available for San Francisco. If not, then he’s got a headstart on the offseason program.”
(On what he has seen from Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston and their offense)
“Jameis has just improved. He’s improved all year. I think the thing that’s most impressive about Jameis is that their offense is at 42 percent on third down right now. When you play a rookie quarterback all year and they’re converting 42 percent of their third downs – that’s impressive. The touchdown passes are there. He had five in one game. He’s running the football. He’s extending plays with his legs – not necessarily always on third down, but it’s the early downs that catch you off guard because he’ll run for 15 or 20 (yards) and slide and get up. He’s playing well. Makes all the throws. None of the throws are a problem for him. He’s got a really good deep ball – we’ve always known that. He’s operating their offense each week a little bit better with all of the little play-action fakes and the screens and the draws and those kinds of things. He’s going to be a good player.”
(On Buccaneers WR Mike Evans)
“Evans is big time. He’s a big time target. So, (CB) Trumaine (Johnson) will have his hands full again this week.”
(On CB Janoris Jenkins’ status)
“Janoris practiced today and we have him down as limited, so he has a chance.”
(On if Jenkins has cleared the concussion protocol)
“He’s cleared the concussion protocol. He just had to clear the exertion phase. I’m assuming that he did that today.”
(On if Jenkins has cleared the exertion phase of the concussion protocol)
“I will let you guys know tomorrow. We’ll find out this evening, how he feels.”
(On if it is a matter of reps for Jenkins)
“He just needs to feel good after going full speed. He got up to full speed, so we’ll find out how he feels.”
(On RB Todd Gurley’s status)
“He was limited. We had down as limited in practice. It was just rest. He doesn’t have any issues.”
(On if he has talked to the team about this possibly being the last game in St. Louis)
“No. It’s not an issue. Our focus is on Tampa Bay. That’s the most important thing.”
(On if he follows the news regarding the stadium)
“No. I’d have a hard time doing that on a normal week, let alone a short week.”
(On if it normally takes a feature running back until midweek to physically recover
“Let me say this, it takes everybody time. Regardless of the position you’re playing, it takes some time. We have some defensive linemen that played 50-60 snaps on Sunday, so it takes them time as well. So, it just makes sense for us to rest Todd (Gurley), and he’ll get some good work tomorrow. Every Thursday night game there’s issues that take a little bit longer and people need their rest. I was asked today, if there’s increased injury rates in the Thursday night games - there is not. The committee has been looking at the research over the last three or four years and there’s just not. It just takes time. It just takes time to get back, that’s all.”
(On DE Louis Trinca-Pasat getting promoted to the active roster)
“This is the time of year when people express interest in players on your practice squad and he had a couple opportunities. So, we went ahead and brought him up to our active roster.”
(On the holding call that reversed WR/PR Tavon Austin’s touchdown punt return)
“I think they called (RB) Benny (Cunningham), but the call was actually on (S) Cody (Davis). They tangled their feet and it wasn’t holding.”
Rams Assistant Head Coach/Offense Rob Boras – Post Practice -12/15/15
(On his sleeping update)
“We’re getting a little sleep. We’re all tired. It’s been a long 10 days or whatever it’s been, but everybody’s getting excited, getting closer to the game.”
(On if he’s seen his wife yet)
“I saw her a couple hours after the game Sunday before we came back to work, so it was kind of nice to see my wife and kids.”
(On if he’s sleeping at the facility)
“Nope. I made a commitment about 13 years ago when I got in the league that I’m never going to sleep in the office, so even if I get home for a half hour or so we’re going home.”
(On if he’s happy with the way the first week went)
“I’m really glad we won and I didn’t care what the score was. When I saw (CB) Trumaine (Johnson) get that interception, I would’ve been happy if we won, 7-0, if we got shut out. All we needed was to win. The whole building needed to win. It wasn’t about the offense. It was about the team victory. Shoot, I was about the only guy, I mean, we were all jumping, but I might have been jumping the highest in the press box when Trumaine scored.”
(On what it meant to him to receive the game ball)
“I like living in anonymity. You guys have been around, I try to keep my head down. I walk around, walk away. To me, that was for all of us. The whole offensive staff was unbelievable. The players were unbelievable. Obviously, personally, I mean there’s a lot of pride with that, but that’s just a compliment to everybody and how everybody stepped up.”
(On if he’s ever received a game ball before)
“With the head coach of the team we’re about to play when I was with him, got a couple as an offensive staff member in Chicago with (Buccaneers Head Coach) Lovie (Smith).”
(On how nervous he was calling his first game)
“Other than maybe the birth of our first child, that might have been the most nervous I’ve ever been.”
(On if he was nervous throughout the entire game)
“Well, yeah, when I thought it might come down to two-minute at the end there, that was kind of scary. I mean, yeah, it was nerve-wracking.”
(On the adjustments he made at halftime to help get RB Todd Gurley going)
“We knew that eventually…when Todd’s had success, Todd’s really run the ball well in the second half. Go back to the win at Arizona. I don’t know what his stats were at halftime, but Todd ran really well in the second half. That’s all we said was, ‘Guys, if the game’s close, we’re going to keep pounding it.’ The O-line bought in, the tight ends were buying in and because the game was close, we were able to keep running it. We ran a couple different plays, but then, the day the guys…the plays weren’t mattering at that point. The offensive line and Todd and the tight ends…I mean, the wide outs were running down the field. It takes everybody to run the ball and they were all committed to it.”
(On if he’s had any of those half hour nights of sleep)
“This week’s really short. This is a hard turnaround. It doesn’t matter probably if you’ve been doing this for 20 years as a coordinator or if you’ve been doing it for six days, these Thursdays are hard.”
(On if he threw up before the game)
“Oh, number of times. Yes. I excused myself one time in the press box.”
(On the reason he got sick)
“We all take a lot of pride. We all have a lot of pride in what you want to do. Nobody wants to be embarrassed. You want to do what’s right for everybody. You get nervous.”
(On how QB Case Keenum performed)
“I thought Case played well. I mean, we didn’t try to put him in any real difficult situations. I thought he handled everything real well. Handled all of our checks, got us into the right plays – couple of those third down passes earlier in the game. The one he spun to (WR) Bradley (Marquez) was a heck of a throw, so I thought he played well.”
(On if this is a special game for him because of his relationship with Buccaneers Head Coach Lovie Smith)
“What I tried to tell the players is this is the most important game on our schedule, because it’s the one in front of us. If it was the first time that I was getting the opportunity to coach against Coach Smith, it’d probably be a little bit more special. But, this is probably the third time I’ve coached against him since I’ve left. So, it’s always fun to coach against your friends and the people you respect.”
(On if Smith has influenced him in any way)
“Just his steadiness. I don’t know if that’s how Coach Smith was before he was Coach Dungy, but I always heard how consistent Coach Dungy was or is. Lovie, obviously, being a disciple of Dungy, Lovie was just the same person every day. When you see that approach, even when things aren’t going well, because things were a struggle when we first got to Chicago, 4-12 or 5-11 our first year. Then made the playoffs the second and the Super Bowl the third. I mean, he was the same person when we were losing as we when were winning because he believed in what the system was and what he was doing. I see that same sort of thing happening down there in Tampa.”
(On if Smith is the same person behind the scenes)
“Very. Same person on the sideline as he is in the office.”
(On if Tampa’s defense is still pretty much the same as it was under Smith in Chicago)
“Very similar. I went back to some of my notes from 2004 and 2005 when I was still there and it’s a lot of the same stuff. Obviously, there’s been influences with (Buccaneers Defensive Coordinator) Coach (Leslie) Frazier joining him and some different things, but for the most part, it’s very similar to what we saw.”
(On how he thinks Smith’s style of defense is successful running the same type of coverage)
“It’s like anything – you keep it simple. Those guys know exactly where they’re supposed to be. It was the same way when I was with him in Chicago. They have really good players. When you keep it simple with really good players…same way when it was with Tommie Harris and Lance Briggs and Brian Urlacher, now they have (Buccaneers DT) Gerald McCoy and (Buccaneers LB) Lavonte David. They have really good players doing it and it’s been that same way in that system whether it was Warren Sapp and Derek Brooks, or in Chicago, it was…Tommie Harris was backed up by Lance Briggs and now it’s those two guys. When you have those kind of players and they know exactly what they’re supposed to do, they can be real consistent.”
(On what Buccaneers DT Gerald McCoy and Buccaneers LB Lavonte David bring to the game)
“Well, they’re just both game wreckers. The whole premise in that defense is trying to create a pass rush with four guys and Gerald McCoy, being one of the four as the D-line, can create some havoc. He’s a really good player, has a great motor. Then, obviously, Lavonte David’s all over the field. Has great vision, instincts. He’s a really good football player.”
(On the possibility of this being the last football game played in St. Louis)
“Again, we’re just trying to win today, just dealing with what’s in front of us. None of us control any of that stuff. As the tight end coach, I have one sign in my room. It says, ‘Focus on what you can control.’ That’s really hard in any aspect of life. That’s all we can do. We can’t get caught up in everything else. We’re just trying to focus on our task at hand and move forward.”
Rams QB Case Keenum – Post Practice – 12/15/15
(On what a short week is like for a quarterback)
“It’s just like it is for everybody. Everything is condensed. You’re putting a lot of stuff in that you normally spread out over a couple of days in one or two days. But, for me it keeps a lot of the clutter out. I keep things simple. Not really seeing ghosts. I’m watching what I watch on film and then I’m moving on to the next thing. I’ve learned that and moving on.”
(On what he means by seeing ghosts)
“After a full week of watching film, sometimes you can watch the same clip so much that you start seeing things that aren’t there. You start trying to read too much into a defense or trying to see too much or do too much. When it comes down to it, you have to trust your fundamentals and your technique and your reads and just go through them.”
(On if Tampa Bay’s defense is basic by NFL standards)
“I don’t know if you’d call it basic. They do what they do and they’re good at it. They’ve got some really good players on the front end and back end that have done really well and put some really good things on film. We’ve got our work cut out for us.”
(On if they’ve talked about this possibly being the last game in St. Louis)
“No. I’m not thinking about that. I just played my first game in St. Louis last week. I’m playing another game. I’m excited it’s at home. I’m excited it’s on national television. We’ve got some colorful jerseys, so it should be a fun time. Should be good.”
(On what he thinks about the color rush uniforms)
“I didn’t get much chance to study them. We had our equipment guys in there. The equipment guys, it wasn’t their best look, I’ll say that. Some of those guys didn’t fill out the jersey quite like some of the guys in the locker room. Not to dis on them too bad, but they did their best.”
(On if he’s tried on the color uniform yet)
“No, I sure haven’t.”
(On if they get an extra jump in their step wearing different uniforms)
“I don’t know. It’s fun for warm-ups and pictures. When the lights come on and the ball is kicked off, it’s football.”
(On how he thinks he played after looking at the tape)
“Played good enough to win, which is obviously…pleased with that. That’s definitely the main goal of the whole team is to go out there and win. But, I can be better. I know I can, which is nice that we can win and I can still have a lot of room to improve. Just little bitty things that you watch on film and you critique and you want to get better. I’m looking to get better this week.”
(On how things have been working with Assistant Head Coach/Offense Rob Boras after he took over offensive coordinator duties)
“I think it’s been good. I think it’s great. I think he’s working his tail off. You look at it, it’s a pretty tough time to take over. Your quarterbacks change and then you get a short week. That’s two pretty tough weeks on a coordinator. I think he’s handled it very well.”
(On if there have been big or subtle changes since the change in offensive coordinator)
“It’s hard to say. I try not to look too much or compare too much. Every week in the NFL is a little bit different. You come in and you’ve got brand new plays. You come in and you’re playing a brand new defense. It’s a brand new game plan. Each week there’s change. It’s just a little bit different who’s up there starting the meetings.”
(On what he sees from the Tampa Bay secondary)
“Great players back there. I think (Buccaneers CB) Sterling Moore back there at corner, I’ve got some experience with him in the past. The safety they brought over from Chicago there, he’s been running that same type style of defense for a long time. They’re in the right spots. They’re cluing on me. They’re cluing on my eyes, so I’ve got to be very disciplined with what I do.”
(On if he has a chance to be the Rams starting quarterback moving forward if he plays well over the remainder of the year)
“My deal is that I’ve got an opportunity to start right now and I’m not looking to what’s ahead. I’m not looking at what’s behind. I’m looking at this week and it’s Tampa. I’ve got to go out there and put our team in the best possible situation to win.”
(On if he will get a fresh haircut before the game with it being a primetime game)
“If my wife has any say, then yeah. I don’t know if there’s enough time. We’re cramming everything in. I may be looking a little scruffy on television. It’s not the first or the last time.”
