Rams Head Coach Jeff Fisher – Post-Practice – August 26, 2013
(On how practice was)
“Our practice was very good. It was warm. We got a lot accomplished. We’re going to come back, put shoulder pads on tomorrow and get a lot more accomplished.”
(On if he gets enough done in training camp now that the rules have changed and don’t allow two-a-day practices)
“We’ve got the walk-thru, so we get a lot out of the walk-thru. Are you talking about training camp? Because right now we’re almost in the regular season kind of schedule. In general terms, with the walk-thru and the practice, no it’s hard to get enough reps for the younger players. There’s just not enough. You go to a 90-man roster, and then you reduce the number of practice opportunities. It’s hard to get reps for the players, full speed reps, from that standpoint.”
(On how the short week affects the preparation for their game against the Ravens)
“Well, today’s a normal Thursday in a preparation week. That kind of gives you an idea. If it was a Sunday game, today’s Thursday, and we’d be backing down tomorrow. We have to get some work done tomorrow, particularly for our opener. There are still things that we have to get in. We need tempo, so we’ll put pads on tomorrow and then we’ll back down on Wednesday.”
(On if TE Lance Kendricks and DT Jermelle Cudjo were able to do more at practice today)
“They got involved in both the practice sessions today. Yes.”
(On if he’s hopeful that Kendricks and Cudjo will be able to play Thursday)
“It’s a little early to tell, but it was really good to see them out there with their teammates and participate in full speed drills.”
(On what he’s seen from WR Justin Veltung)
“He’s got return ability. He’s got good hands. He’s a smart young man and picked the system up very quickly. He’s active in the slot as an inside receiver, and he does good things for us in the coverage areas on special teams.”
(On if the running stats are where he wants them through the first three games of the preseason)
“No, that’s an area we need to improve on. We haven’t had opportunities in the games to just really line up… We didn’t go into the game thinking we were going to hand it off 40 times. We’ve got young receivers we’ve got to develop. We’ll be OK in the run game. We feel like the better we are downfield with the matchups, the more opportunities it will create for us in the run game.”
(On if there will be more of a run game Thursday)
“I think you’ll probably see some more. Yeah.”
(On how Ss Rodney McLeod and T.J. McDonald played Saturday and how they have improved)
“I thought they played very well together, from this standpoint: in (QB) Peyton’s (Manning) hurry-up, it was difficult for them to line up one at free (safety) and one at strong (safety). So, they lined up left and right and played both positions. They just interchanged and that’s saying a lot for two young safeties right now.”
(On how CB Robert Steeples did during training camp)
“He worked very hard. He’s got some athletic ability and such, and he’s really a pleasant young man to be around. It just didn’t work out.”
(On if some of the recently released players improved throughout camp)
“Every single one of those guys that came in early left here a much better football player than they were when they got there. We praised them for that and their effort, focus, their cooperation with club rules – all those things. It was a great group of young guys.”
(On if DE Chris Long is OK)
“Yes. Chris is fine.”
(On TE Cory Harkey)
“You guys are getting dangerously close to me saying, ‘I will have an injury report for you next Friday.’ It is closing in. We got good news on Harkey. That’s all I can say.”
(On T Joe Barksdale)
“Joe Barksdale, as I said yesterday, was going to practice today, and he was not limited whatsoever on the practice field.”
(On how the rookie running backs look)
“Good. We’re getting a chance to look at them this week. With (RB) Isaiah (Pead) not being available to us in Week 1, we need to look at all the backs for that matter. So, we’ll have all three backs on the field.”
