This stuff never ceases to amaze me. Amazes me that it makes it in print. Short article with pic says a camera lens fell from sky and damaged roof (a single hole in a corregated sheet roof and wood underlayment) and two window screens (as seen in pic). Sure a camera lens falling from the sky is weird....but what is otherworldly is she is wanting to get compensated for the $1000 insurance deductible! :what: It gets better. The damage estimate was $4500! :boing:

Here's the pic of the $4500 damage.

$4500.00? Shoot, I'll fix it for 3K. :hehe:

But yeah, I know what you're saying. There is no shortage of hands extended in this world, but the best part is the many contractors that are willing to pad the bill to make said hand extensions possible.

Yeah the $4500 blows my mind....but so does the turning it into the insurance company with a $1000 deductible. The materials are $100 tops. Labor at most $400, more like $200 so $300-$500 and she paid a $1000 deductible? I cured my wife of that nonsense early on, glad I did.

Well, that's the way it works -- obviously. Get a contractor to estimate it at $4500.00, get them to do the job for $1,000.00, refund back the $1,000.00 for the deductible and split the difference (after actual costs). Same old racket that's been around for eons. I remember bringing my car in for an estimate a couple years ago. I was backing out of a spot, and so was this other guy, and we both clacked bumpers going about 2 mph. IMMEDIATELY the estimator at the body shop was talking about how the frame may have been bent, and it would cost a few thousand to straighten it out. I held up the clip that held the back quarter-panel together (a $4.00 part) and said, "I was going 2 mph - I seriously doubt there's any real damage."

To which he replied, "Yeah, but what's your deductible?" With a smile on his face, no less. Crooked sumbitches.

That's sleazy alright and why rates are as high as they are these days. My wife managed to keep the damage to the car to the front qtr panel. Smashed it in good the length of it but was still fine to drive. At the time our deductible was $200. I told her to get estimates first. It was $700 to do the "work". It was a common car, common paint and trim package at that time so I wanted to see if it was worthwhile to try the junk yard. Exact qtr panel, exact color and exact trim....$50. The "work" was 9 easily removed bolts. If we had reported it the insurance company would have gotten the $700 from us in 2-3 years.
