It's not the flu, but dammit, it sure feels like death nonetheless.
My son got it first (he's the one who always ends up giving me whatever plague he gets...) and he was dizzy, disoriented and had significant body aches and shakes.
Fever was mild, but because he has grown so fast recently (he's 6'4" and he's just turned 16... he's actually got stretch marks on his knees and back from growing so fast). So, because he's thin and has grown, we weren't sure if his body was maybe a bit out of whack compensating.
Thankfully, no fever spike (my kids tend to do that) and after a couple of days of flushing water, ZippFizz (I swear by that stuff) and ibuprofen, he got on the other side of it.
The cough has the potential to be ugly. Even with very infected chest mucus, my nose is clear. That's important to know for some of us. THIS cold heads straight for the chest... and that's the bad kind of cold...
I've had pneumonia twice. The first one nearly killed me (not exaggerating, the Doc actually said I should be dead) and the second was a double pneumonia, so I get a little mental when the kids bring home any plagues because of how serious it can get for me. Also, I can't get the flu shot. Doesn't help with colds, but the 3 worst flus I had (not including the ones mentioned above) were in 3 consecutive years when I got the shot. I'm not allergic to eggs, but for some reason, I think I react to the shot...because I get really, really sick almost immediately.
Anyway... THIS bugger going around is NO JOKE.
The MINUTE you feel flushy, get fever reducers into your system and start flushing with fluids like water and brewed Green Tea immediately (unless you can't take Tylenol or Motrin or Advil or their generics, then contact your Dr right away). I highly recommend a Vitamin B complex flush like ZippFizz, but not everyone can take it because of medications. It's better than pills. No, I don't get paid, it just works, so I pass the word along. So few things actually do as advertised... Oh, and zinc. If you don't want to take zinc pills, a great way to fight a cold is Tom's of Maine toothpaste with zinc instead of flouride. Couple that with the zinc based mouthwash and you're basically not giving the cold germs a place to live in your mouth. Which is probably why I have no nasal infection...thank the Good Lord.
Both my daughter and I have had a MUCH easier time of it, but dangitall, this bugger has been just awful. I feel like I took on the Rams D all by my lonesome... And because I've had pneumonia, it went right to my chest. I actually felt it in my chest within minutes of my first sniffle.
So, take care this holiday season. Be on the lookout and jump that Cold route like JJ looking for a pick 6! Colds during the holidays...just....suck.
Be well all,
Mack
