Aaron Donald is the No. 1 interior defender in the NFL
By: Alex Alarcon |
Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald will be entering his third year in the NFL, and he’s already widely considered as one of the best in the league. Slowly but surely, opposing teams and fans learned the name Aaron Donald. Now, he’s getting praised once again for his stellar play over his first two NFL seasons.
Aaron Donald not concerned about contract, focused on 2016
According to Sports Illustrated’s Doug Farrar, who ranked the best interior D-linemen, Donald is the best in the business.
“Put simply, there is no player in the NFL who’s more disruptive on a down-to-down basis between the tackles than Donald. He was clearly a top-five talent in the 2014 draft out of Pitt, and yet he fell to the Rams at No. 13.”
Even though Donald is one of the smaller defensive tackles in the league, it can also be used to his advantage. Ever since his rookie year, Donald has been double-teamed consistently.
“Two years into his career, he has used his undersized frame to his advantage: At 6’ 1″ and 285 pounds, he gains ferocious leverage at the snap by getting under the pads of blockers and using his upper-body strength to move them back. Add in his quickness and pursuit speed, and there are long stretches when he’s just about unblockable, even though he faces double-teams on a regular basis.”
This past week, Donald was also ranked the No. 4 best player in the NFL according to Pro Football Focus. Sorry J.J. Watt, it seems as though Donald may be the start of a new era for the Defensive Player of the Year award in the NFL.
