The Oakland leverage play already has begun
Posted by Mike Florio on January 15, 2016

For years, Los Angeles has served as the leverage for NFL owners hoping to squeeze maximum public money from their current localities in order to build new stadiums. Now that L.A. is off the table, NFL owners need to find new “or else” options if they hope to shake taxpayer dollars from the trees on which money doesn’t grow.

Enter San Antonio.

It’s no coincidence that media reports linking the Raiders to San Antonio emerged immediately after the door was slammed shut on the Raiders moving to L.A. With the very real threat of the Raiders bolting from the Bay Area back to Southern California, the folks in Oakland did nothing meaningful to assist with the construction of a new stadium.

Now that the Raiders: (1) can’t go to L.A. unless the Chargers choose not to partner in Kroenkeworld; and (2) have an extra $100 million for the purposes of building a stadium in Oakland, will the powers-that-be in Alameda County feel more compelled to act? Or less?

That’s why San Antonio is back in play. But it won’t be as easy as owner Mark Davis thinks.

“We don’t have a lease right now at the Oakland Coliseum,” Davis said Tuesday. “America, the world is a possibility for the Raider Nation.”

The lease in Oakland is only part of the equation. Davis still needs 23 other owners to approve any move to a new city. Unless Davis plans to take a page from his late father’s playbook, it means that it will take only nine other owners to freeze him out of a given market, like San Antonio.

And two strong “no” votes surely would come, quickly and loudly, from the state of Texas. Neither the Houston Texans nor the Dallas Cowboys will want to see another NFL franchise wedged into their territory.

“Well if they go there, we have a suburb called Plano, Texas right outside of Dallas,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told PFT Live last March. “There’s a higher percentage of Cowboy fans in San Antonio than there is in Plano; 97 percent. So it’s a great hotbed for us down there, we do a lot of things down there, we train down there. So if they go down there they’ll be surrounded with a lot of Cowboy fans and that’s good, that’s good.”

On the surface, Jones acts like he isn’t worried about the Raiders causing that 97-percent saturation in San Antonio to fall. At a deeper level, he surely is. While he would have no qualms about the Raiders using San Antonio as a crowbar to get something/anything from Oakland, Jones would drop the hammer if/when Davis tries to move to San Antonio.

And Jones, who had the vision, leadership, and commitment to help make Kroenkeworld a reality for the NFL, undoubtedly has the juice to get at least eight other owners to tell Davis that the Silver and Black will never be infringing upon the Blue and Silver.

I don't think there is any way the cowboys and Texans let the raiders move to san Antonio. The best move for him ironically would be St Louis. There is already the dome and practice facilities set up and ready to go.

No way will the Raiders move to San Antonio as long as Jerry Jones is alive. The silver and black is popular and would pull all of those Cowboys fans. Nope, ain't happening, imo.

Selling to a local ownership group and leaving the raiders brand in Oakland and moving the team to St Louis while rebranding it makes too much sense for it to actually happen.

San Antonio billionaire open to helping Raiders relocate to Texas

The NFL approved the relocation of the St. Louis Rams to Los Angeles on Tuesday night, leaving both the Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers in limbo in their respective stadiums.

Neither the Raiders or Chargers came close to making a major change Tuesday, but the Chargers were given one year to decide whether to make the leap to Los Angeles and share a stadium complex with the Rams in Inglewood, Calif. Should San Diego decline, the Raiders would be given the option to move. However, Oakland might be looking to move out of the Bay Area sooner than later.

Red McCombs, an 88-year-old San Antonio billionaire and former owner the Minnesota Vikings, said in a radio interview with ESPN San Antonio Wednesday that he talked with Raiders owner Mark Davis about moving the team to San Antonio immediately after the team withdrew its application to move to Los Angeles.

According to Bleacher Report, Davis already owns land in San Antonio and McCombs insisted in the radio interview there are “several locations that would work” to build a stadium in the San Antonio area. McCombs also said he has 12 corporate sponsors ready to welcome the Raiders. The billionaire also said he would be open in buying the Raiders from Davis if need be.

"We would be happy to be investors if that what he wants," he said. "We have investors lined up if that what he wants. If he wants to keep it all to himself, that's OK too."

Davis traveled to San Antonio in 2014 to scout the area around San Antonio.

In a bid to entice the Raiders to stay long term, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf said Wednesday should would be open to leasing the land at O.Co Coliseum at a “favorable price,” according to the San Jose Mercury News. However, Schaaf still refuses to help for a new stadium or give Davis complete control over the stadium which is mainly used to host Oakland Athletics baseball games.

“We're asking the Raiders to give us the time and attention to show that this can be done," she said. "We never were able to get to the level of detail where they could see how we can leave room for development and still have the parking and tailgating they want."

Oakland is still in debt from a renovation 20 years ago when the Raiders moved back from Los Angeles. City officials have said they won't seek help from taxpayers with a new stadium, and asked the NFL for more time to develop a project in a response to the Raiders' relocation plan. The NFL gave it to them.

"We'll see where the Raider nation ends up here," Davis said Tuesday, who was equally noncommittal in comments to reporters outside the news conference. "We'll be working really hard to find us a home. So for our fans and everything else, don't feel bad. We'll get it right."

Davis said anywhere in the world is a possibility for the Raiders to relocate since they don’t have a lease with the Coliseum in Oakland.

The Raiders franchise has been under the Davis family’s control since Mark’s father Al became the coach and general manager in 1963.

Report: Raiders have already secured land in San Antonio for move

Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis missed out on Los Angeles, but that doesn't mean he'll return his team to Oakland.

They're playing without a lease in 2016 -- and the city of San Antonio could provide a soft landing for the Silver and Black.

As the theory goes, Davis has secured a parcel of land about halfway in between Austin and San Antonio -- about 80 miles apart -- where a new stadium could potentially be located, creating leverage in his dealings with Oakland.

Davis has plenty of reasons to drop his team right between San Antonio and Austin. The two cities would offer his team over 2.3 million football-hungry sports fans. His players would enjoy a state without income taxes.

Lastly, if he's anything like his father, Davis enjoys a little payback. He'd serve some up by becoming an instate competitor to Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who led the charge to exclude the Raiders from LA relocation .

I'm thinking, now that Kroenke is building in L.A. with "NO" public money, this practice of rich guys getting richer by milking tax $$$$ out of a community will end!!
As a retired business I have never liked this practice! When I build a business I want to own it. Lock Stock and Barrel. And I don't want to share with anyone! I don't like sharing my profits with anyone that didn't help me earn it! ie any City, or State government!! I'd share with my employee's and that's it!!

These days IF your rich enough to own a Team, your rich enough to build you own stadium, or take out a loan to build one!!

Selling to Larry Elison and keeping them in Oakland is more likely. He and Davis have already talked, Elison is beyond wealthy and he's a Bay Area mogul. That marriage makes too much sense. Elison should be looking at what Stan is building and one up him.

First priority for Mark Davis is to find a new barber.... then worry about where his team will play next year.

I was thinking about that the other day too, with both the Raiders and the Chargers. Either one of them moving to St. Louis would amp up a division rivalry into a state rivalry as well.

I wonder though if St. Louis would take either one of those teams given the mayors comments. But with a viable stadium plan in place, either one of them could move there, have their new building in a couple of years, and in the meantime have someplace to play, practice, etc.

I can see the Raiders moving in the next 2-3 years if not sooner. That stadium they play in is just flat out embarrassing.

I disagree on the Raiders being popular that is overstated and the Cowboys are the most popular team in the NFL and the number one in sales of merchandise the Raiders would not come close to trumping them and I don't know how Jones would react to the Raiders relocating to San Antonio...The NFL has that market on their radar and believe me there is plenty of population in Texas to go around.

Former Vikings owner and multi billionaire Red McCombs would love to partner with Mark Davis to bring them to San Antonio and I still believe they will get something done in Oakland, but again their brand would not touch the Cowboy brand whatsoever.

Case in point years ago then Raider DT Lyle Alzado once said that for the Dallas Cowboys are America's Team then the Raiders are Russia's Team....Sorry the Raider brand is not what it used to be and many don't like the association and that's why the Raiders will never be in Los Angeles again because it's too close to Los Angeles.

IMO if Mark Davis does move they will retire the Raider name in Oakland (like the Oilers) and rebrand them San Antonio.

You have to think when all the back room wheeling and dealing was going on in Houston last week that Davis spoke plainly about his options.

When he was deciding to take the 100 mill to sever the Carson relationship, surely they spoke potential landing spots out loud.

If land in San Antonio really has been locked up it would have come up. He may already have a wink and a nod approval from the league.

Jerry shouldn't be threatened by the Raiders in SA - they are much more of a threat to Houston. But Texas is big - lot of football fans to go around down there.

Not happening. Our worthless commissioner said the STL plan is a failure. Throw in Stan shitting all over it, St. Louis isn't getting a team.

Never say never the NFL has always returned to a city they left and the Gateway City will rebound, it's a great city in more ways than one and deserves only the very best.

Like another guys said in response, never say never.

It might not happen this time, and it may not happen for years, but you never know how things will be down the road.

I lived in Charlotte when they got the Panthers, and even a few years before it would have seemed a long shot for them to land an expansion team. Add to that there was no way they were going to get public financing for the stadium. And yet, they found a way.

That being said, St. Louis should drive a much harder bargain next time if they are considered for a team. Definitely no first tier clauses.

I will welcome a REBRANDED Raiders team to STL with open arms. That's going to be a fun team to watch in a couple of years if they keep trending up.
