What is he worth on the open market?

All bets are on the Jaguars making the move... but... I don’t know... he’s a streaky player and could have been had on the cheap just 2yrs ago.

Now?

I’d be nervous signing a deal along the lines they are projecting.

Nick Foles
  • Contract package: $94 million/4 years
  • Overall guarantees: $62.5 million
  • Fully guaranteed at signing: $50 million
Foles didn't waste any time in buying his way out his contract by paying the required $2 million after the Eagles exercised an option to retain him for another season. The Eagles decided against considering putting a franchise tag on Foles strictly for trade purposes.

Foles enters free agency as the best quarterback available. The Super BowlLII MVP came to Philadelphia's rescue for a second-straight year because of another season ending injury to starting quarterback Carson Wentz. Foles led the Eagles to victory in the final three regular season games for a wild-card playoff berth.

There were 20 quarterbacks who were either clear-cut starters or took the most snaps for their respective teams last season on veteran contracts. These 20 contracts averaged approximately $23.5 million per year, contained slightly under $54.275 million in guarantees where a little less than $44 million was fully guaranteed at signing. The average length was four years.

The deal most closely approximating these values was Alex Smith's with the Redskins. Smith signed a four-year, $94 million contract extension last March after his trade from the Redskins. The maximum value is $106.5 million because of $12.5 million in incentives based on Smith's playtime and Washington's playoff success. The extension has $71 million of guarantees, of which $55 million was fully guaranteed at signing.

The expectation is Foles will sign with the Jaguars. A reluctance to pay Foles would be understandable considering he has been most successful when only having to play for a handful of games. The Jaguars or some other team should be willing to pay Foles at least in the Case Keenum neighborhood. His former Rams teammate signed a two-year, $36 million contract with the Broncos last March in free agency. The deal is worth up to $40 million through incentives and had $25 million fully guaranteed at signing. Keenum just reworked his deal to facilitate a trade to the Redskins, which becomes effective on March 13 when the 2019 league year starts.

Foles is going to get paid a lot of money base solely on his playoff and super bowl performance. He hasn't really done shit in the regular season since that one fluke of a season in 2013 I think it was. Has been average at best. Plus, he really needs to have a creative offensive mind calling his plays to keep the defense at bay. If a defense can focus on beating him alone he's going to struggle. And I don't think John Defilipo can be described as such. But if the Jaguars can get back to playing defense like they did two years ago an average QB would get them to the playoffs which seems to be where Foles doesn't suck it up. So who knows. I certainly wouldn't want to pay him that kind of money though.

It's a crap shoot to sign Foles. If it's the Jags they have to look at the market. I don't see a lot of landing places for Foles. I'm more inclined to do an incentive deal that could get close to those numbers. A nice starting point would be around $20 Million a year average with the ability to make $25 Million a year.

Read this about their offensive line and it might make you think twice about signing Foles. He needs some time to throw as most pocket passers. Foles does throw well on roll outs though. Jags have to get him some weapons and Fournette has to have a big year to help Foles.

Defilpo was his QB coach in 2017 with the Eagles so he at least should have a good idea how to use Foles. Foles is going to need more help than the Jags have now.

He's not a reliable starter so don't sign him as one. Conundrum solved.

Foles is fine as long as the offense is packaged just right. Jags should be able to do that for him with their staff. Question moreso is his weapons in Jax, without that even if you run the offense he feels comfortable in it ain't gonna matter. I suspect they'll try to ensure they have a good ground game to support him for now, but that's not exactly the specialty of the OC.

It will be interesting to see how the Jags approach this offseason if they bring him in.

I think Foles is a bonafide starter, but only in the right system. If a team will not or cannot structure its offence to maximize his talents, they're best to steer clear. Problem is, I think that rules out many NFL franchises that are looking for QBs...

The guy thrived under Andy Reid, and could thrive under the right coach somewhere else. Put him in a Jeff Fisher offense, and he will fail, like all the others. . . .

I've doubted Foles too many times in the past and had my foot put in my mouth. So ill just keep reading the comments.

Didn't Foles have a rough start at the beginning of the season?

He always reminded me of Keenum, in that pressure caused him to Chuck the ball up for grabs. He needs quicker options or check downs, and a good OLine. The Eagles protected him well, and Philly had a variety of weapons that gave him good options.

The Jags don't have as good of an OLine, nor as many weapons at receiver and TE. It will look like a bad move unless they fill their holes.

I'm glad he will be out of Philly. Not, having Foles as a safety net is going to hurt once Wentz gets his yearly injury from acting like a running back.

It's been proven give him good people around him and good coaching and all is well with Nicholas Edward Foles! Not a fan of Doug Marone, but John DeFilippo is the new offensive coordinator in Jacksonville and he knows Foles and Flip with be trying to rebound after the hiccup in Minnesota which was not a good match with Mike Zimmer. I expect the Jags offense to be better and Foles to have a solid season in the Sunshine State.

I'd give him 2 years of big money if I was the Jags. Anything more than 2 years and I'd start to get nervous ha.

I would hate to be the jags gm and have to make that decision.

But they have a couple of wrs that can go up and get the ball so you never know.

If I were a Jags fan, I'd be more excited about the prospect of acquiring Rosen.

Foles... you kind of know what to expect... a streaky as hell QB.
