Patriots, Chiefs, Ravens, Saints, Eagles, Seahawks among teams already laying groundwork for frenzied trade deadline

The trade deadline is still nearly a month away, but already there has been a rush of activity to express interest in certain valuable veteran players, and a sense among aggressive general managers that there are more potential trades to be made this year than possibly ever before.

That sentiment was shared by the eight general managers I reached out to this week, all noting that the chasm between the contenders and pretenders seems more stark than in years past, and that it is no longer considered taboo for struggling teams to trade top players in-season or embrace a wholesale rebuild. The Bengals, Jets, Broncos, Dolphins, Cardinals and Washington are all winless, and there have never been more than six winless teams this late in the season since the 1970 merger of the AFL and NFL. If five teams or more remain winless entering Week 6, that will be an all-time record.

Trades have become more commonplace in general in the NFL in recent years, with younger GMs with more diverse backgrounds (and not simply scouting) having accepted a mode of transaction that was largely frowned upon in the past, given the extreme team nature of this sport and the differences between schemes and terminologies from team to team. But now, several teams have already begun laying the framework for potential deals ahead of the October 29 deadline, sources said.

The Saints, Eagles, Ravens, Chiefs, Patriots and Seahawks have been among the most active teams, league sources said, hopeful of addressing roster needs to fortify what they believe can be Super Bowl runs. Many of these teams have already been in pursuit of disgruntled Jaguars star corner Jalen Ramsey, who still could be dealt ahead of the deadline; the Chiefs, Eagles, Ravens and Saints, in particular, are pushing for corner upgrades.

The Patriots have issues at the offensive line, tight end and receiver, and are expected to push for players like Bengals receiver A.J. Green and/or tight end Tyler Eifert; those players also appeal to the Saints, sources said, who made a real effort to land Denver's Emmanuel Sanders a year ago and likely would again.

The Ravens need to address a flagging defense and will attempt to do so, sources said, with Denver's Derek Wolfe making sense for them, and any other pass-rush help, too.

The Eagles tried to land star defensive back Patrick Peterson from the Cardinals a year ago, and he could be dealt when he returns from suspension as well, with Arizona yet to win and in need of future draft picks instead of 30-something players.

Washington has refused to trade holdout star left tackle Trent Williams to this point, baffling rival GMs who used adjectives like "ridiculous," "unbelievable" and "backwards" to describe the team's approach to that situation. Still, some believe owner Dan Snyder will relent at some point this month with his franchise spiraling. Could that prompt him to deal stalwart end Ryan Kerrigan as well? If so, there would be serious interest. Same with Bengals defensive standouts Geno Atkins and Carlos Dunlap.

It has the makings of a wild few weeks until the deadline. Traditionally, this would result in far more talk than action. But that tide may finally be changing.

Patriots could reportedly pursue AJ Green trade

AJ Green is making progress in his rehab from ankle surgery and is aiming to return at some point this month, but a scenario could play out in which he does not have many — if any — games remaining with the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Bengals are winless thus far in 2019, and their chances of contending for a playoff spot are quite slim. According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, several NFL teams would be willing to trade a first-round pick for Green, and some executives believe the Bengals will field inquiries for their core players in advance of the Oct. 29 trade deadline.

One team that is expected to call the Bengals about Green is the New England Patriots, La Canfora adds. They could also ask Cincinnati about oft-injured tight end Tyler Eifert.

In addition to having offensive line issues that need to be addressed, the Patriots could use another playmaker. They appeared to have found one when they signed Antonio Brown, but he lasted just 11 days with the team before being released. There was some talk that the Patriots were on the verge of acquiring a star receiver in a trade earlier in the week, though it does not appear that deal is going to happen.

Bengals owner Mike Brown has shown an unwillingness to unload star players in the past, and there’s still a chance he would prefer to sign Green to an extension rather than trade him. The seven-time Pro Bowler is earning 12 million this season in the final year of his current deal.

Teams willing to trade first-round pick for A.J. Green when healthy but skeptical whether Bengals will make a deal

There is increasing internal discussion in front offices around the NFL about the state of the Cincinnati Bengals and the potential for possible trades ahead of this month's deadline. Conversations with eight general managers this week revealed a landscape where competitive teams are eager to get a crack at a bevy of Bengals veterans, but with skepticism about whether the team will actually made trades.

Owner Mike Brown is decidedly old-school, and this franchise has by and large not been involved with the more recent trend of significant trades going on around the league in recent years (Khalil Mack, Amari Cooper, Odell Beckham, Jr., to name a few). However, some GMs I spoke to believe it's possible the Bengals move a few players and they will be fielding calls for a core of key players in the coming weeks, sources said, with receiver A.J. Green the primary target.

The Bengals, 0-4 and getting overwhelmed most weeks, have a rookie head coach who is going to need time to turn the franchise around and, as a franchise that has not often been among the highest-spending in the NFL, some GMs believe it is at least possible they are open to moving salaries of players who will not be on the Bengals' roster by the time the franchise (6-14 in its last 20 games) does turn around. They have the most overt trade options ahead of the Week 9 deadline -- though again, doubts remains as to whether they will embrace it.

"If they wanted to, and they did this right, they could be right there with the Dolphins and Raiders when it comes to 1, 2, and 3s in the next few drafts," one GM said of a potential Bengals rebuild.

"We've gone over the roster and the contracts," another GM said. "It is begging for trades, but I'm not sure they'll seriously consider it. That's not how Mike Brown operates."

Rival general managers I spoke to agreed that the Bengals could get a first-round pick for Green, 31, if the acquiring team was able to negotiate a new deal for him and if Green returns from his foot injury soon. It is highly unlikely that Green signs an extension with the Bengals, I'm told. League sources said the Saints and Patriots are among the teams most deeply looking for pass catching help, and both would have interest in oft-injured tight end Tyler Eifert as well, who is making just $1 million this season.

Elite defensive tackle Geno Atkins, 31, is coveted and has a very team-friendly deal, signed through 2022 with the guaranteed money already paid out. Carlos Dunlap, 30, is signed through 2020, makes just $3.1 million this season and has caught the attention of a slew of general managers desperate to upgrade their pass rush. If tackle Cordy Glenn is healthy they Bengals might be able to move that $7.2 million contract to a contender in need, with offensive line such an issue around the league. Teams are wondering if the Bengals will sign corner William Jackson to a big extension in 2020 after already paying big for Dre Kirkpatrick, and intend to inquire about them as well, sources said.

And Andy Dalton, who is signed through 2020 ($17.5 million next season) has long been viewed as a potential trade chip by other front offices, though any movement there is more likely after the season, given the complexities of the quarterback position and the nuance of systems and schemes.

By trading Green, Atkins and Dunlap, the small-market team with sagging attendance could save roughly $13 million alone in the second half of the season. History would indicate this would be an unusual step for the Bengals, but they will also have more inquiries and opportunities than ever before the reshape the team for the future on the fly.

After facing the winless Cardinals on Sunday, the Bengals get the Ravens, Jaguars and Rams before the trade deadline, with the likelihood of any sort of reversal of fortune remote at best.

OL is at a premium, don't think any team will be willing to trade one of their above average Ol. But in the rams case anyone average or above would be an upgrade.

Quite surprising to see us not on that list.
We have $2.4 million in cap room for 2019, so trading picks for a high priced player is just not doable without restructuring or releasing someone else.

I doubt we make a move this year. We can't keep on trading for players with 1 year left on their bloated contracts. We are gonna be up against the cap, it's time we start getting talent from the draft and FA. Some of us are going to have to be patient as well. We might not be in the superbowl every year, but I'm sure we'll make the playoffs most of the time.

Barnwell at bspn has a suggestion we trade our 2020 first, 2021 second and a conditional 2022 second and Peters for Ramsey and a 2020 fourth.

If we are dreaming I always liked Kerrigan. Atkins with Donald would put the D Line to another level or two. Dunlap is cheaper coming off a knee injury.

Rams could find some money. The problem is they will need draft picks to fill future holes. I would not completely rule out Snead making a smaller move.
I think the defense needs more help than the offense.

I don't know if we can afford it, but I'd love to make a move to upgrade our O-line and secondary

The Rams need young talent. I'd love Ramsey to be on the Rams. I have no idea if they can make it work.

I don't think they give up on their Olinemen yet. They went all in last year, but what is more important this year? With key players either aging, contracts expiring, or simply not playing well, the team seems to be in a slight retooling stage. Maybe it's best to evaluate what they have now and gear up for the next two or three years in the new stadium.

I wonder if we put Peters on the trading block to a hungry AFC team? I'd say yes to a 3rd at this point and roll the dice with Hill. I don't expect Peters to get us any better than a 4th compensatory pick in FA

if we could get a CB to replace Peters who twiddled his fingers during pass plays but actually tackled well it would be a net positive gain for our defense.
