There are many that love him like @jrry32 because of his ability to throw the ball from all different angles & his ability to extend plays. When I watched him, he always seem to come up short, which he is because he is only 6'0 although listed at 6'1.

Honestly I'd rather have someone in that area of the draft like Sam Hartman from Notre Dame if we are going to consider a 6'-6'1" QB prospect. His negatives are a lot of things can train and coach out of him, but his biggest ability is being able to process quickly which is a must for an NFL QB.

Joe Milton is a hell of a physical talent but this scares me,
  • Completed just 38.6 percent of his throws beyond 10 yards (per Pro Football Focus) in 2023.

Hartman has a popgun arm. I'm sorry, if we're taking a quarterback in this class, I would hope he's more talented than Hartman (whom I don't see an NFL future for. I don't see an NFL future for Joe Milton either, but for the opposite reasons.), and Rattler is definitely more talented as a pure passer than either of them. Personally, I like him a lot more than McCarthy and Nix.

It’s amazing the amount of people who think not much of McCarthy but are on the band wagon with guys the like of Rattler. Smfh

Hartman has a better QB rating and TD/INT rating than Rattler and his processing speed to towards the top.

That said I’d hope we don’t take any of them if we aren’t taking any one of them towards the top. Pennix is my cutoff and I’d rather have Wentz, and that’s saying a lot.

Honestly I just watched him during drills in the combine and wasn't that impressed. If we are talking mid rounds maybe I'd be interested. I thought Penix looked terrific. Effortless and accurate thrower.

Rattler's had an awful O-line and defense at South Carolina. Hartman had a great O-line. McCarthy had the top-rated O-line in the nation.

Rattler's processing speed is good, his arm is so much better than Hartman and McCarthy's, and he's proven that he can get out of the pocket and still look downfield.

Reality is that QBs taken outside the first round usually don't become starters. If you look at the guys who have panned out, they all had at least one glaring flaw, but they had other strengths that compensated for it. Rattler has that sort of skillset too. It's a shot in the dark, but he has starter tools, played in a top tier conference for a former NFL OC, and had to play with a lot of adverse circumstances (bad OL, bad defense, bad running game, and injuries at WR). The big thing for me is how much he improved and matured during his time in college.

My instinct is that this is the sort of kid McVay will like. McVay loves Stafford. He loved Baker. What do those guys have in common? Moxy (gunslinger mentality), improvisational ability, and a lot of arm talent with unique ways of getting the ball out. Rattler has those things too.

I like Hartman too. He's my late round QB preference. High volume of throws with tons of experience. Limited arm strength ensures he goes late but he's smart and what I'd want in a backup QB.

Problem with Hartman is McVay likes to stretch the field vertically. So if the Rams go get speed at wideout up high now you have a backup who comes in and that element dries up a bit. That said with proper timing many weaker armed QBs can make some of those harder throws, they just have zero room for error in their timing. Can't throw that deep out late and gun it in there like Stafford does.

I’m an ND Homer and want nothing to do with Hartman
Noodle arm
And I’d take Rattler in the 2nd or 3rd over McCarthy in the 1st
If he dropped to 2nd round and Rams had a choice between the 2? That’s a different conversation

Personally I don’t see Pennix making it out the second. He’s a perfect high ceiling with a middling risk factor for only a second.

And if McCarthy had a bad oline and didn’t perform then what? We make an excuse for him?No. it is what it is and he performed when he needed to. Just like these so called prospect experts that have no idea how Michigan ran their offense and maybe watched a game or two and declare themselves and expert which is laughable at best. Here on this site people post complaints how the national media or average fan doesn’t now anything accurate about our team. Well it’s the same exact thing with the Wolverines and some of the dogmatic viewpoints on this site. Smfh.

You win when you are suppose to win and he has done that. He’s not making it past the Seahawks in the first, that’s if either the Giants or Vikings don’t take him.

No argument there. Good post.

That is a very good point and agree with your post except in this aspect we’d be having a ball control QB who is accurate and can read fast and get the ball out. That by itself counts for something. While he’s not first overall pick Stafford he fits a role and we for sure going to be looking for a QB!

I don’t think he’s a starter in the NFL ever. I question his ability to process quickly enough. He also comes with maturity red flags, which isn’t ideal for a potential team leader.
