The Los Angeles Rams are moving toward a meeting with ESPN analyst Jon Gruden about the team’s head coaching vacancy, multiple sources with knowledge of the Rams’ coaching search have told Yahoo Sports. The sources indicated Gruden has become a focal point on the Rams’ list of candidates, but that other candidates could also come into play – notably Stanford Cardinal head coach David Shaw and New Orleans Saints coach Asshole Face.

It’s not known whether Shaw or Payton have any level of interest in the Rams job, but multiple sources said Gruden would be inclined to listen if the Rams were willing to grant him full personnel authority. One source said such a concession would be a “must” for Gruden to even consider taking a meeting with franchise leadership in the coming days. The Rams will consider granting personnel authority to at least some of the candidates in their search and that Gruden is among that group, a source told Yahoo Sports.

Gruden, Shaw and Payton are three names that continue to fit the theme of the early list of Rams candidates who would make a big splash in the market. The team also had initial interest in Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll and University of Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh but both quickly brushed off any consideration for the opening. If Shaw is interested, the Rams could quickly set a meeting with his representatives. Seeking Payton would be more complicated, as he signed a five-year contract extension with the Saints last offseason and the Rams would first need to reach some level of agreement on potential draft-pick compensation with New Orleans.

A meeting with Gruden would be far less burdensome, particularly considering there is already some high-level familiarity with the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders coach. Rams chief operating officer Kevin Demoff previously spent four years with the Buccaneers from 2005-09, overlapping with the final four years of Gruden’s tenure as head coach of the Buccaneers. During that time, Demoff was a senior assistant to then-general manager Bruce Allen. Essentially, he had a front-row seat to see how Gruden ran his coaching staff and interacted with the personnel department. It’s that experience which is believed to be elevating Gruden on the list – along with Gruden’s high profile.

Those who have spent time with Gruden say he has continued to believe he could again coach at a championship level in the NFL, particularly with rule changes that have given more leeway to offenses in recent years. But they’ve also said he has viewed his options for a return very selectively and largely predicated on a team’s quarterback situation. In that respect, Gruden’s belief in Jared Goff would be key.

It’s notable that he gushed about Goff in one of his “QB Camp” features on ESPN and also in some other interviews. While such public praise is taken with a grain of salt in many corners of the NFL, one source close to Gruden said he has also privately expressed that he believes Goff is a franchise quarterback.

“He does believe in him – that’s not just for TV,” one source familiar with Gruden said. “He thinks [Goff] has the stuff to be a franchise quarterback. I don’t know if Jon would have traded the farm to get him, but he sees him as a guy that was worthy of building a team around him. He sees leadership and star power there.”

Interestingly, those are two traits the Rams might value most in Gruden, too. Not just that he has been to a pair of Super Bowls and won a ring, but also because he has the type of high profile that will resonate with the Rams’ fan base. For financial reasons, that is expected to play a factor in the next head coaching hire.

While other names have been raised in the Rams’ search, sources have told Yahoo Sports there is a business component that will also factor – specifically, the plan of Rams owner Stan Kroenke to sell hundreds of millions of dollars in personal seat licenses for the new Inglewood stadium. The Rams are expected to begin that effort in force in early 2017 – not exactly an ideal launching point with the Los Angeles fan base already seeming to have grown frustrated with the team.

Eh, not a big fan of him becoming our next coach. He's been out of the NFL for so long.

If I were a betting man I would bet that he will be the coach. I think he has the desire to coach again and I think he is precisely the man Demoff/Kroenke want. I also think it would be a mistake to give him that much control. I also think he is a bit overrated as a HC. I know I'm in the minority when it comes to that opinion.

3 names I'm definitely happy to hear are a "possibility". May be nothing but better than the Harbaugh/Carroll talk, imo.

I don't want him. I rather we get Asshole Face from the Saints. He's actually produced a hall of fame quarterback and improves offenses dramatically. Our defense is not the problem. If our offense gets going, our defense will get even better because it doesn't have to be on the field as often.

Yup. If we don't go with either Patriots coordinator, Payton is the only option for me.

I really don't want the guy who was caught filming the 49ers london practice. I'm still shocked he's in the league but then again... patriots...

No to Gruden. He's over-hyped, overrated and completely dismantled the Bucs once he inherited a very talented team.

If he's the next Rams coach, the Rams are going to suck for another 20 years.

I can dig a Les Snead/Jon Gruden ran team. Let Snead handle the GM roles and Gruden be the HC and I think we would be a very successful team. Gruden knows a lot of people in this league, so if he were to get the job, he would put together a good staff. We could do a lot worse then Gruden IMO. Plus, after talking to Sapp about Gruden that makes me want him a little bit more. :yess:

Hmmm...is it me or does he not seem to "gush" over just about every QB who visits his QB Camp? Having said that I think the Rams should pursue him but with eyes wide open.
Still would prefer Asshole Face if he is available at this point in time........

Don't know that gruden is my first choice, and without talking with him personally, it's really hard to say either way. He inherited a great bucs team and did nothing outside of that. What concerns me more is that I heard him say one monday night watching Miami how the wildcat was going to, and I quote, "revolutionize" the nfl. When ronnie brown scored on a wildcat play, gruden was like, "uh...uh...I just came" seriously, tirico was trying to call the replay but all you could hear was Jon saying he needed some napkins.

The shit thing is that shanny jr and the play calling savant from Washington are very good but may be a year or two away from head coach caliber and what would a rookie year be like with these guys? If it were either of them 2 years from now, I'd say giddy up.

He turned the 4-12 raiders around.

People blame him for the bucs, however poor drafting left him with aging, often injured players. It's wasn't his drafting either. That was his GM who jumped ship to Atlanta after a post superbowl hangover caused front office tension.

Bruce allen took over as GM and it just didn't work out. I mean, how many people said bring back Martz before Fisher got hired?

Coaches get too much credit and/or blame for drafting. Those guys aren't the one scouting college players all season long.

One thing to add about gruden; yes, he's been out of coaching for many years but so was vermeil and when people looked for the same reason to neg on him I thought the complete opposite. His years doing College games, I thought, gave him great experience in talent evaluation and the college game atmosphere kept his passion for the game burning like your pecker after a long weekend of hookers and viagra in Bangkok.

I have a feeling gruden would be a better coach than he ever was due to what hes been doing during his time as an analyst, but, again, I'd have to talk with the man before I knew for sure.

This line is a little unfair and I see alot of people saying it. He built the Raiders into a playoff team from a bad team. I mean he got them there first division title since 1990 in the 2000 season (Raiders sucked for like a decade before him). Yeah the same Raiders he beat in the Super Bowl as Bucs HC. Raiders nearly made the Super Bowl with him as HC before he went to the Bucs but ran into that arguably GOAT Ravens defense in the AFC Championship game. He helped make Rich Gannon into a pro bowl QB after being a career backup. I do agree I think Gruden has been out too long of coaching and hes not my 1st choice either but I dont believe hes a bad HC ala Fisher. We do need a HC that believes in Goff and if rumors and the QB camp is true then Gruden loves Goff. I think Gruden would be able to bring in a good coaching staff also. Just my opinion ofc.

Fisher could have won the superbowl with that bucs team. And despite winning 2 divisional titles in
6 years, he won an average of about 7.5 games a year during that stretch. Sound familiar? I like gruden, and would definitely have him as a must interview, I'm just not sold on him, especially with the kind of control he would want. But maybe you're right. Maybe he'd have done better with that control with the bucs. I also remember that players were getting burned out by his approach. Maybe it was too intense for them.
