- Jourdan pointed out a new wrinkle on defense with 4 safeties. Only 2 CBs played all game.
-Lake has replaced Yeast a the starter, Yeast's play time dropped big time.
-JJ3 got significant snap
-Trammell got a lot of playing time with Kupp out, and made the most of it.

I imagine the answer lies somewhere on that spectrum from not knowing the system and calls well enough to being in the doghouse.

I suspect that was part of it. Guess it's better to have a guy who isn't as athletic out there than a younger dude who might not be fully up to speed or not doing well in practice. JJ knows the basic scheme and calls so only had to learn the wrinkles that have evolved under Morris.
They're definitely making lemonaide back there on defense.
That said I loved Tomlinson's film in college so not sure wtf is going on with him. Figured he'd be pushing for playing time given things right now. But all that aside it sure was nice to see Kendrick have a bounceback game. Boy was straight shit following that arrest so maybe we can count on him the rest of the way and we need him playing well.

True. Lake is a guy is was wondering about as to why he didn't get more snaps anyway. Especially when he can play CB or Safety. Hey reminds you of Fuller in a lot of ways.
The same with Fuller, he got good minutes too and is another guy I was puzzled about his lack of minutes.
This secondary will definitely be stronger with time.

I certainly appreciate the way Yeast has played this year but I very much like seeing more of Lake. I don't know that he's going to do well when the call puts him at that deep safety role, though, which is why I wanted to see more of him in the pairing and see how he handles himself back there. But Fuller is likely gone in FA, as the Rams don't like paying that spot and they're good at finding them. So I'd really like to see one who has a lot of experience in a pairing and playing deeper in coverage, as adding instincts back there in playing the ball would be real nice to have next to Lake.

Really like what Trammell did, they compared him to Kupp, just not as twitchy. Quentin Lake has improved week over week and good to see the increased playing time.
TE Coach Nick Caley should be on the hot seat as his group although having 4 on the squad really do not do much and I understand that Higbee is working through some health issues, but overall I expected more from this unit.

I agree. I looked it up this morning out of curiosity, the team ranks poorly in missed tackles. Yeast leads the the team with 13.

Indeed. And also him whiffing on that deep ball due to misplaying it was also a big strike against him I think. Good kid I'm sure but very limited.

Yeast is being played out of position. He isn't a deep safety. The Rams got rid of the only true deep safety they had when they let Scott walk. Yeast simply doesn't have to range to play deep safety unless he's in a two deep zone. He simply lacks the range and coupled with his inexperience he's late or misses the play. Lake is far and away the better safety between the two. Yeast is a Fuller like safety, basically a SS type with the ability to play the intermediate zone. I think Yeast will be fine next year with another year to develop and will fill Fuller's role.
I'm not surprised at the moves regarding Lake and Yeast. I've always felt that Lake was the better of the two. That is not to say Yeast won't become a good safety, but he needs to become better at play recognition, i.e. reading plays and that takes time.
I think the Rams will draft two CBs and another late round depth safety.

Outside corners: Durant & Kendrick
Slot: Tomlinson
Primary pairing: Lake & Fuller
Rams don't trust Tomlinson, clearly. Not sure why, we're not privy to how well he knows the scheme or wtf he's been up to in practice or maybe even off the field. But just going off pure ability I think the above is without a doubt our best 5.
Well ok I'd actually prefer Kendrick in the slot role. But he's been solid outside when he's got his head on straight so it's probably splitting hairs in terms of who is where. I just prefer the slow coverage guy being on the inside where it's easy to give him help in the form of rubs or ILBs sitting in zones to affect his threat areas.

Tomlinson is an badly undersized CB if you want to play him outside where he has only played in college. CB is one of the most technique critical positions in the NFL. Depending upon the program the player comes from it takes an average of 1-3 years to develop a starting CB. Most CBs take a big leap in their abilities in their second year.
As an undersized CB Tomlinson's technique is even more critical and his lack of technique is clearly evident. I remember an interview that was with Jason Verrett an undersized boundary CB. He lacked the agility to play SCB and so he's only played boundary. Jason talked about how when a player is undersized, his margin for error is decreased dramatically. It's simple geometry where the undersized player must play closer to the receiver if that receiver is significantly taller. I predicted a relatively short career for Verrett because smaller CBs need to play more physically on the boundary making them susceptible to injury. That has proven to be the case with Verrett.
I'm not surprised about Tomlinson not playing. He has never played SCB and it's probably for the same reason Verrett never did. Tomlinson can be successful on the outside, but he's going to have to take a huge leap in his development, i.e. technique for him to do it. The earliest we are likely to see Tomlinson playing is in a rotational role next year. I don't understand McVay's fascination with undersized players.
Case in point a player like CB TJ Tampa is 6'2" 200 lbs and runs a 4.45 is the type of guy they can get in round 2-4. The reason he isn't going to go higher is because he's best as a LCB, i.e. a CB who is best playing off the LOS. He's got good speed, and can play both man and zone schemes. He will need a year to polish his technique but projects as a good boundary CB prospect much like how the Rams use Ahkello Witherspoon who is also 6'2" and 200 lbs and timed at 4.45.
IMO a guy like Tampa will project to be a starter before Tomlinson who I see as a rotational boundary CB or a dime DB. This is why I think the Rams will try to extend Witherspoon for 2 years and draft a guy like Tampa to eventually replace him.
Cobie Durant is from a smaller program but he has a lot of upsides athleticism and speed needed at boundary CB and at 5'11" was typical size for an outside CB a few years ago. Now he's slightly undersized but not overly so. His problem is again needing to develop the techniques he needs at this level. I think he will be fine as an outside CB if given the opportunity to simply focus on developing his technique for that position. SCB requires a vet to play it well. It's the most difficult of all the CB positions to master. It shows me that Morris really doesn't understand the concept of scheme or position fit when he tried to move Durant to SCB. All he did was retard Durant's development because both positions are different in their technique. It's why Shelley who's only played SCB struggled outside. Again another illustration of Morris' ignorance or indifference of position fit.

The TE snaps continue to baffle the mind. Kupp gets hurt because McVay prefers his WR to block instead of Te's in 12 formation

Lake took over the Star role. It wasn't working with Durant. The coaches were experimenting. So Durant moved back to outside corner, then he got injured.
I liked the four safety look, but it remains to be seen if they keep it once Durant is healthy.
