Rams snap counts: Akers is RB1, Weddle plays 19 snaps in return vs. Cardinals

Cam Akers and Eric Weddle both made remarkable returns in the last few weeks, going on to contribute in the Rams’ 34-11 win over the Cardinals in Monday’s wild-card game. Akers came back from a torn Achilles in less than six months, while Weddle came out of retirement after two years away from the game.

Both players were on the field for a good portion of the Rams’ win against Arizona, particularly in Akers’ case. Looking at the snap counts, it’s easy to see that he’s emerged as the No. 1 running back in Los Angeles and may not let go of that role for years.

Here’s a breakdown of who played how much in Monday’s win.

Offense

Screen-Shot-2022-01-18-at-2.33.48-PM.png

Seven players on offense played every single snap, and only four of them were offensive linemen. Tyler Higbee never came off the field, nor did Cooper Kupp or Matthew Stafford. Andrew Whitworth was the lone lineman who didn’t play every snap, missing about 30 plays due to a knee injury suffered on the first play of the game. Joe Noteboom replaced him on those 30 snaps, and also came in as a sixth lineman for three plays.

Akers vaulted Sony Michel for the No. 1 running back role, out-snapping Michel 32 to 24. Michel remains an important player on offense and got the start at running back, but Akersis the more explosive runner and better receiver.

Odell Beckham Jr. and Van Jefferson were WR2 and WR3 once again, though only one snap separated the two. Their playing time was slightly on the lower side because the Rams used so many different personnel groupings, using heavy packages with six linemen and also putting multiple tight ends on the field together.

Kendall Blanton and Brycen Hopkins played 12 and 11 snaps, respectively, mostly contributing on running plays. Neither of them was targeted by Stafford.

Defense

Screen-Shot-2022-01-18-at-2.33.56-PM.png

Nick Scott stepped in as the primary safety in place of Jordan Fuller and Taylor Rapp, never coming off the field. Darious Williams played every snap, as well, while Jalen Ramsey played 48 of a possible 56 snaps on defense. Dont’e Deayon is the third cornerback still, though David Long Jr. played 19 snaps before injuring his knee in the first half, so the coaching staff is high on him, too.

Terrell Burgess played a season-high 37 snaps as the No. 2 safety, staying on the field two-thirds of the time. He played well, too, which has fans wondering why he didn’t get a shot earlier in the season. Weddle was the rotational third safety, playing 19 snaps (34%) in his return from retirement. If Rapp comes back next week, Weddle’s role is likely to shrink.

Greg Gaines played more snaps than any of the Rams’ defensive linemen, edging Aaron Donald out by four plays. A’Shawn Robinson played 57% and stood out with a team-high seven tackles. Marquise Copeland played 15 snaps, and both Bobby Brown and Michael Hoecht got in the game down the stretch when the score was lopsided.

Troy Reeder wore the green dot as the defensive signal caller and played all but seven snaps. Travin Howard shined in his increased role, playing 30 snaps in the win over Arizona.

Leonard Floyd and Von Miller made a big impact in this game and played more than half the snaps, getting a little bit of time off late during the blowout.

Some interesting numbers.
Burgess with more than DD or David Long, and about twice as many as Weddle.
Akers outpacing Michel is still mind blowing.

I like that. It's nice to see that Weddle was really just an insurance and the coaches trust Burgess. If a retiree had really become a starter, that would have been a very bad sign for our young DBs.

Akers and Michel are an RB duo that can take us very far.

I recall reading somewhere that Weddle only played first half on passing downs. Which insinuates the score allowed them to stick with the kids in the second half.

So if this game is tighter on the scoreboard then maybe Weddle's snaps go up a bit. And I agree it's nice to see the younguns getting meaningful playoff snaps. :thumbsup1:

We were watching a replay of the Manning cast. Peyton was funny when he saw Weddle on the field. He said that its not fair and he could still play if he only had to show up for the playoffs. Then he said that it had to be illegal for Weddle to come out of retirement like that.

It made me think, if a teams starter were injured would a team try to coax a guy like Manning out of retirement to play QB for them?

Not sure if he would survive that game. Payton has never been mobile - and now he is out of shape. Imagine if he had to play against AD, Von and Floyd. He would be in the hospital before halftime.

Yep, not to mention that in his last year his arm strength had really been diminished.
He definitely couldn't whip the ball like back in the day.

Only if Payton has been keeping up with his 5 on 5 pick-up basketball. :D

btw... Akers, Jefferson and Burgess all contributing... bummer that Fuller is out and I don't know what the deal is with Lewis.

But, that's good return on that draft class.

I'd like the Burgess starting spot to be permanently his. He's better then Rapp. There, I said it.

I will say Burgess has been using that speed to get around nicely back there. And he does have a better feel over the top than Rapp does. Which isn't saying much lol but still. :laugh1:

I feel like both Rapps weaknesses and Burgess’ performance are being exaggerated to get to this conclusion.
Not IMO. Rapp has a tendency to not wrap up. Burgess, in his more limited snaps, has been more sure handed to my eye.

Curious who lined up the defense when Reeder wasn't in there. The plays he wasn't in on probably came at the end of game when they were subbing young guys like Rozenboom so someone would have had to be doing it.

This could be that area that catches teams by surprise… our opponents being unsure what to expect from Akers. :horns:

I agree. In addition to the uncertainty of what to expect, we have 2 quality RBs. So it can be hard for opposing defenders to stop the run even if they knew what was coming. Some teams have players in their ranks that everyone knows will get the ball - yet no one can stop it. It works with 3rd & Cooper Kupp and I think a healthy Akers will be hard to stop too.

A week ago, it was stop Kupp.
Now there is talk about Akers effect.

Rams have a number of injury issues, that said, Rams now have Akers.
I can’t think of a better possible pickup.

if all falls into place, Rams have by far the best offensive weapons in the league.

I'm not a big Rapp fan, but I agree. If Burgess was that much better then why was he on the bench most of the season? Rapp is a good tackler and plays the run well. His biggest problem was the games that Morris was using him more like a free safety. He's a good box safety.
