We were out fishing Saturday and got swarmed by a pod of dolphins taking a ride in our draft. Dolphins do this all the time and it is always a cool experience. This time they were all around us,,, you can't really tell how many were around us because of how one of my twins was filming with his phone, but if you didn't think that dolphins were curious intelligent animals,,, you can now at least know that they like to jam to some good tunes. They were apparently horned-up by the music they were jammin to.

These guys were basically right on top of the fishing spot we were hoping to catch some tasty critters from... so ,,, all we caught there were cudas.

That's awesome! I remember doing a ship experience when I was younger, took a week off on an old wooden ship, helped with the sails etc... On the way back home the last day a pod of dolphins were swimming along side us, it was really cool to see.

Dolphins are really smart though, so they probably were jamming out and having fun with it. They've done studies and found that dolphins are self aware (something that humans don't develop until they're a few years old), have specific names for themselves and call each other by their name, and have their own language. They will answer to the names they are given, and after years of not seeing each other if they find another dolphin they will remember and great the other dolphin by its correct name. Other than humans they're probably the smartest creatures on earth. There's a scientist that is looking to crack their language.

How very cool. Thanks for posting.

Now, if they can remember another Dolphin's name after not seeing them for years, then they are definitely smarter than I, as I usually can't remember someone's name for after 5mins.

Now, enuf about the dolphins, tell us more about the babes in the bikinis :)

It is so cool knowing that they even have their own names. I just read an article a week or two ago that said scientists had proven that dolphins were able to recognize other dolphins names (personalized whistles / songs) even after not hearing them for 20 years. They are highly intelligent and are definitely self aware. Being self aware is something that many scientists believed was only possible in humans,,, but recently they have discovered that dolphins, some primates, and even some parrots are in fact capable of being self aware.

I can vouch for some large parrots having that ability. I live with one. He will actually make up songs and sing / hum them with a deliberate beat,,, and then start dancing to his own made-up song.

Anyway, with dolphins, we take our dog out on the boat sometimes. There is a place in the Keys that has some dolphins in pins that are actually just like fences in a canal we take our boat through. The dolphins aren't really impressed with us when it's just lame humans in the boat,,, I think because they are forced to interact with humans (dolphin encounter) several times a day in their pins. But when we have our dog with us, the dolphins go crazy. Our dog is a 35 pound schnauzer who has a high pitched bark at times... he starts barking at them and they pop their heads up and start squeaking and clicking at him,,, they would do this for hours if I let it go on. The only thing separating them is about 3 feet and a chain link fence. You can see the wheels-turning in the dolphins eyes. We don't have a clue just how smart they really are.

That's very cool....

About the dog.....I've seen videos with dogs on boats and you're right dolphins seem fascinated by them. Cats too......

You have to wonder what they are thinking in some of the videos. In one a dolphin is letting a cat rub on it and it's clearly enjoying the interaction. You should google it.....there are several on YouTube.

I think I remember you saying that you'll be going down to the Keys soon. Not sure if it's what you're looking for , but , there is a dolphin experience that you can have there that is really unique. It's not at the spot where we take our dog to converse with them either.

Just before Marathon Key you can find the Dolphin Research Center. You can truly interact with multiple dolphins there. When I say interact, I mean you can have two dolphins pull you around a large area with you holding the dorsal fin of a dolphin in each of your hands. They pull you around at a pretty good clip too,,, you'll be hydroplaning across the water. I don't think you can do that anywhere else period.

If you are interested you need to call ahead and make reservations.

I had a trip planned awhile ago but had to cancel. But I am going in about 6 weeks so YAY for me.

When I get there I am doing this little fun trip.....it's a blast from what I've heard.

I looked at the website for the DRC and I wonder if the 23 bucks includes swimming with the critters. I've done it before and its a remarkable experience. Do you know if it covers that part too?

EDIT
Nevermind I found it......

Yeah, that's some cool stuff right there Jorge. I've done one of those "dolphin encounters" before and it was great. Dolphins are definitely smart and I'm sure they communicate with each other with some sort of language. But how in the world can we ascertain that they call each other by name and can remember another's name years later if we haven't cracked their language yet? That intrigues me to no end.

I have no doubt they like other animals and definitely music!

Has to do with the pitch of whistles and such, then recording it and playing to study their reactions. Its pretty interesting stuff though, they're hoping that if they can figure out the dolphin language they can then use that technique to figure out any potential alien language.

If they're so effing smart why don't they just wear those "Hello my name is ....." Name tags that way they don't have to worry about remembering all the other dolphins names. :bign:

Finally got the chance to watch this last night. I love this stuff. I've had them do this a few times and it is just plain cool every time.

We had spinner dolphins doing this off the Napali Coast when we were on Kawaii. We were on a huge Zodiac that was supposed to have a bunch of tourists from a cruise ship on it :bummed: but the seas were apparently too rough on that side of the island for them to come into port. DARN IT!!! :sly:

The skipper asked us if we wanted to stop to see if they'd stick around. He was saying that normally all the commotion of a bunch of tourists just scares them off but there were only five of us so maybe not. We ended up getting into the water with them and snorkeling around while they darted around us making that chirping sound they do. It was quite cool.

Wow. Love it, love it, love it. I wish I was there partying with you guys. Was that taken with the Gopro?

I would be a better person if I could do that/see that almost every day.

I used to live in Lake Havasu, and I would take the boat out almost everyday, and cook dinner in a cove with my wife and kid, while watching the sunset. Then the bitch became a Havasu calendar girl and cheated on me, lol.

Not too many people just grab it and go though.

You've clearly mastered how to enjoy it. That is a skill and I envy it. I know others feel the same way. It's a gigantic compliment so you know.
