Wade Phillips was criticized for his bend not break defense and was let go because of it.

The crux of McVay's reasoning was that he wanted a guy to approach the D, like he did with the offense (ironic given the state of our offense right now, but not relevant). By that he meant get away from one size fits all, and put a plan together each week that attacks the opponent's weaknesses, limits their strengths.

Staley came in, and was given credit for doing just that.

So my question. What changed? Did he stop caring about this?

No matter where you end up on the "How good is our defense?" spectrum, you have to admit it's the same each week and does not adapt like McVay preached a few years ago.

The stats show a 1-100 chance of losing that game on that last drive. Yet I was not at all confident we would hold them. I really want to know why.

I feel like Morris just breezes through a Sunday afternoon game, having already made the call for every defensive play that game. Its the same damn call every time. Instead of playing chess with his defense (which has HOF'ers on it mind you), he chooses to play checkers and relax. Yeah, why in the world would you have one of the best press man corners (Ramsey) EVER play press man? Same could be said for Kendrick, he's a physical press corner IMO. Guess what you could have happen if you played up on your man? The QB can't dump the ball in 2 seconds and we might actually get a ... sack?

Baffles my mind that this guy is the one fully in charge of the defensive playcalls and McVay is too caught up in his terrible offensive scheme to say, "hey, we can't give them 10 yard cushions on this last drive because they will stop the clock and drive ALL THE WAY down the field to win"....

Not sure why but this is why I was a big pusher of adding Bradbury in FA as I feel we lack good man to man CBs that can help us play multiple looks. Outside of Ramsey, seems we lack in that area. I also think McVay has bought into the concept of making a team have to run a lot of plays just to try to score anything. He is banking on them making a mistake in a long drive, but that obviously hasn't been the case all the time. I'd love to see more types of defenses mixed in every now and then as the cushion isn't the worst idea but not the best in certain situations.

The lack of adjustment give the situation is bizarre to me.
On the pass where the PI was called and gave the Bucs a first and goal at the 1 Evans was manned up with Kenricks. Ramsey was on Miller. No changing, no swapping, no adjustment....in fact, Kenricks was constantly targeted by Brady and Morris just never made an adjustment.. I would just see where Kenricks was lined and call where the pass was going.
As Romo stated multiple times, the soft coverage is taking away the Rams pass rush.
After Donald got that sack on the 4th down attempt by the Bucs and the Rams got the ball starting on the Bucs 48....then hit a long pass to Kupp to set up a first down at the 10.....I said outloud, if the Rams settle for a FG here its a loss more than likely.
Its sad.

The only time I remember the Rams, under McVay, coming out with a truly "game plan" defense, was in the NFC Championship last year.. and we all loved it. They did the Bear front and shut the 9ers run game down well.

Staley *did not* run a custom game plan D.. he ran his D.. based on the Fangio scheme. Still does. If you've watched the Chargers, you'll note they've had issued on defense as well.

I'm like anyone else, I'd like to see them mix up the defense more. The biggest difference between me and others on here is that I see personnel issues driving many of the decision right now. For some reason, people think that three excellent players makes up a defense.

It takes much more than that.

Some think that Morris can't evaluate his personnel.. well, I'd love to be wrong about that. I felt like Rochell would be a huge part of the defense this year and would allow them to be more creative. A guy with true press-corner traits. He's barely played. I don't think he's missing on any magical edge rusher on the roster.. do you? And, at safety, is there anyone better than Rapp and Scott ready to go right now?

The Rams had one sack.. ONE... and Brady wasn't peppering them with short passes... this team doesn't have a pass rush.. and I think that's just very, very clear.

I saw Ramsey lined up plenty on Evans last night in tight coverage.

And.. didn't you point out that Miller dropped a TD?

Brady wasn't getting rid of the ball on a bunch of quick passes all game long, from what I saw. I also saw a defense that was gassed after making a very good stop that should've won the game.

The defense would've held Tampa to 9 points.. on the road.. if the offense wasn't a complete shit show.

Again.. yup... awful last drive. I just like to put context in there.

It’s personnel plain and simple. We need two things to run the fans defense, corners that can cover and a pass rush.

Hill is just coming back so as he gets back in game shape that should improve the corner spot. In spit3 of many of us want corners drafted McSnead waited too long to do it. Add to that our safety play and quality since Staley was here has fall off a cliff. Who was the last day two safety drafted? Fuller?

pass rush? Floyd is a nice guy players and coaches love him but he’s paid like a pass rusher and just doesn’t produce. Who’s opposite him? Leeis is a wasted day two pick. Hollin? When was the last time he a a pass play with his rush? We seem to just keep wanting to put 7th rounders and udfa out there who don’t do anything when/if they’re given a chance.

I love me some Ashawn Robinson but he’s paid too much and doesn’t usually affect the passing game.

Staley had a much better pass rush rotation than anything Morris has had outside of half a year of Von and look where that defense took us.

The defense is just as much McVays issue as it is the offense with him picking the groceries. This narrative that Morris is stupid, bad or just sleep walks through Sunday is terrible.

Telling you they don't trust the personnel without telling you they don't trust the personnel.

I can only conclude that Morris thinks his corners absolutely will give up the farm if they have to actually cover receivers more than a handful of times a game.

They still have one of the highest pass rush win rates in the NFL.

Don't give me that it is personnel.

The Rams in the first 3 quarters played fairly aggressively and we had 3 and outs all game because the pass rush kept getting to Brady so that he had to get the ball out even faster than he wanted to. We also got a sack during the first 3 quarters.

You’re right we have a great pass rush. Sixteen sacks bottom third in the league.
qb pressures? Next to last

blitz rate? Middle of the pack.

So we blitz a decent amount but don’t get sacks or pressures. Sounds like a great pass rush.

And I have always responded with the same reason - soft zone defense does NOT (I REPEAT) DOES NOT allow sacks pressures or interceptions.

When they play aggressively, they have pressured the QB and gotten a few sacks.

3 sacks last week when they were playing aggressively in the first half against the 49ers

But none in the second half when they played soft zone and eventually fell too far behind with our shit offense.

They got a sack yesterday when playing aggressively and Brady is a hard MOFO to sack since he is a master at getting rid of the ball quickly.

Remember we are over 100 fewer press defense than the next to last place team in number of press defense. No press defense - no sacks.

I still remember Donald having a free pass at Crapola and Crapola able to get rid of the ball since there wasn't a Ram within 10 yards of the pass because they were playing so far back. If there had been a DB within 5 yards of the receiver, I doubt Crapola would have passed that ball and eaten the sack or thrown an interception.

That would explain why we offered all those picks for cornerback Brian Burns Our pass rush is so good. Oh wait he’s a pass rusher. Huh guess we were in on corners and not a couple pass rushers.

Brian Burns is a generational talent and supposedly available. We went all in on that.

I know… some only think you’re mixing up coverages if they see corners lined up in press.

This is actually perfect..
There are people who see stories on the news and buy the narrative instead of doing the research into the statistics and how they line up currently and historically.
Perfection.. great job on the analogy.

I give you a compliment and you can’t even take it. So, strange.

Yeah… the narrative isn’t the numbers.

It’s that easy.
