Sean McVay: We have a “positive problem” with cornerback depth

Posted by Josh Alper on August 15, 2019, 7:33 AM EDT

The next couple of weeks will see teams making decisions about which players will wind up on their 53-man rosters for the first week of the regular season and we’ll likely see trades as teams with good depth at one position hook up for deals with those lacking the same strength in numbers.
One such trade may involve the Rams dealing a cornerback. The team brought back their top four corners from last season and drafted David Long in the third round, which gives them a pretty clear framework for the group. They also have seen good things from Darious Williams, Kevin Peterson and others, which leaves head coach Sean McVay feeling good about how things are shaping up.

“I think it’s a positive problem for us with the depth that we do have,” McVay said, via TheAthletic.com.

Teams are always in the market for cornerback help and some — like the Jets — will be feeling the need more acutely than others. Should one of the players down the depth chart for the Rams strike the fancy of a team in that latter group, the abundance of depth could lead to an asset that helps the team down the road.

I'd say the Rams 'suffer' that same "positive problem" at Safety, WR, RB and perhaps even QB. Still hard to tell at LB imo, but the possibility exists.

Same thing at WR with Thomas and Hodge down on the depth chart, one of them may get moved for a draft pick.

IMO the key element ongoing with the Rams outside corners is the "Pending Free Agency in 7 months".

Both starters Talib & Peters will be looking for new contracts as UFA's. Kevin Peterson, will be looking for an RFA Tender contract from the Rams too. Dom Hatfield & Donte Deayon will be involved in the FA process as well. Its appears this time that the Rams have settled on & signed Troy Hill to be the heir to either Talib or Peters as next season's starter. I am very uneasy with this future set up that is most likely a minority position here in this forum.

I have great interest in the next 3 preseason games in this subject CB's. If I could set up the future outcome the week before regular season begins....

Kevin Peterson now in his 4th season in the NFL & a UDFA signed by the Bears in (5/9/16) puts on a surprising showcase of acquired DB skills in the Rams defensive backfield. Along with another UDFA 2nd yr outside & Nickel corner Darious Williams tandems with Peterson in making both UNcutable.

(Rams) here in 3 weeks decides to trade Troy Hill & go with Talib, Peters, NRC, Peterson, Williams & Rookie David Long in 2019. Thus setting up the future 2020 season with a good core of CB's .....NRC, Long, Peterson, & Williams & whomever the draft brings in.

Think the roster is something along the lines of...

CB1 Talib
CB2 Peters
CB3 NRC
CB4 Long (Not necessarily 4th on the depth chart but he's making this team)

Hill... Just signed him but as I said when that happened I doubt he's our 4th CB and he might not have job security in this group.

Peterson... Dude showed up in preseason game one and if that continues he's going to win a roster spot.

Williams / Deayon / Parker... Young players who have been flashing and producing and generally making things tough on the Rams.

Hatfield... Not this year matey. Expect the Rams to cut him loose early to allow him to get a shot somewhere else. Lots of guys in that previous group to hold things down in the remaining preseason games.

Question here is the relative strength of the other positions at the bottom in terms of how many they're going to keep (will it be 6 or maybe more?). ILB is weak. OLB is strong though and might compensate. Safety is very strong. DL is a little deeper than last year. Gonna be tough.

Rams versus Dallas Cowboys: Players to look out for

ILB Travin Howard

A lot of the attention at inside linebacker was focused on the two guys fighting for the first-team spot at ILB, Micah Kiser and Bryce Hager, yet it was Howard who had the most impressive performance manning the inside of the defense. Howard is a former safety who converted to linebacker in college, and it shows with his quicks and open-field ability. Howard is noticeably thicker than he was in his rookie season (2018), confirming the Rams see him as a linebacker and linebacker only.

Yeah going to be watching him and the ILBs closely tomorrow. The position as a whole has underwhelmed, though. You basically have Littleton and a bunch of dudes who are JAGs with some glaring weaknesses. So my point is I don't see that position group pushing for more roster spots, if anything they might suffer with Rapp counting against them.

Those bottom spots are competitive vs the other groups. ILB is going to suffer vs the others IMO.
