Seahawks, Lynch strike four-year, $31 million deal

Posted by Mike Florio on March 4, 2012, 10:01 PM EST

The Seahawks had hoped to get running back Marshawn Lynch signed to a long-term deal before Monday, the deadline for using the franchise tag.

They got their wish.

The team announced within the past half hour that the Seahawks and Lynch have agreed to terms. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, it’s a four-year, $31 million contract with $18 million guaranteed.

It’s unclear whether and to what extent the guaranteed money is fully guaranteed or partially guaranteed. Given the funding rules, it’s likely that Lynch will get a large chunk of true guarantees in 2012, via signing bonus or fully-guaranteed base salaries. Future guarantees will likely be injury only, for now.

We’ll post the details once they’re available. For now, the bottom line is that Lynch has signed on the bottom line.

Based on his play from last year he deserves that contract, however one has to wonder how much Lynch was motivated by the contract year. He underperformed his entire career, sans the Saints playoff game, prior to last year.

IMO it may have been smart for Seattle to just tag him. Make him play for a new contract every year. It wouldnt have been that much more expensive.

I hope this contract blows up in the Seahawks faces

Maybe with this new contract, he won't have the incentive to steal from women's purses. Maybe he could actually pay for a cab as well; then he won't run over people and leave the scene.
