hello gang. I'm spending 6 days in Boston and 6 days in NY this September. Looking for some suggestions for cool restaurants, bars and sights to see that might be less obvious from any members who know these cities.

Obviously we are doing a Broadway show, a game at Fenway and the Statue of Liberty, but looking for things we might not have thought of... Thanks in advance!

Went to Fenway in 2004 (I'm pretty sure I broke the curse). Absolutely stunning ballpark. Make sure you spend some time on Yawkey Way, the road outside that they close pre-game so you can stand around having a few beers and eating hot dogs.

One of my close friends lives right in the middle of NYC. He's gonna send me some suggestions for you. I'll post them here once I receive em.

In Boston, take a stroll through the "combat zone" for some pretty cool people watching.
In NYC, I highly suggest hitching onto a pub crawl.

We are flying actually. I was under the impression that Boston wasn't that far from NY but apparently far enough to fly... Who knew! I'm used to living in a tiny country where the furthest you ever need to drive is 3 or 4 hours.

No doubt, the memorial is a must see but you still have to buy tickets in advance right? I'd highly recommend that even if it is not still a requirement.

Have any of you guys ever used the NFL ticket exchange? The Redskins are in NY the week I'm there and looking at tickets. Assume it's all above board?

Yes, safe transactions can be made there and prices are usually at least somewhat reasonable but don't forget the fees they tack on like most aftermarket ticket sites.

@ScotsRam

Here's what my good friend who lives and works in NYC has to offer...

The best way to get around is the subway. Taxis are very expensive. Don't go above the 90's unless you are going to Yankee Stadium.... otherwise say a prayer.

If you are going to Yankee Stadium... take the subway, it goes directly to it.

Things to see...

CENTRAL PARK (horse carriage ride... 59th St and 5th Ave)

GRAND CENTRAL TERMINAL (great place to eat & shop... 42nd St and Park Ave)

EMPIRE STATE BUILDING (great view of the city... 33rd St and 5th Ave)

ST PATRICKS CATHEDRAL (50th St and 5th Ave)

TIMES SQUARE (48th St and 7th Ave... crazy part of the city, full of tourists, worth checking out ONCE)

LITTLE ITALY (Canal St, Downtown)

CHINA TOWN (Canal St, next to Little Italy)

ROCKEFELLER CENTER (great restaurant on top with a great view... 50th St and 5th Ave)

MUSEUM OF MODERN ART (MOMA) (53rd and 5th Ave)

MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY (70th St and Central Park West)

GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM (89th St and 5th Ave)

GROUND ZERO (Greenwich St, Downtown)

INTREPID (46th St and 12th Ave. Pier 86)

SOUTH STREET SEAPORT (Fulton St, Downtown by the water,,, great place to party)

LIBERTY HELICOPTERS (Pier 6, South Street Seaport)

CIRCLE LINE BOAT TOUR (Pier 78, South Street Seaport)

BARS...

Mr. Purple

Suffolk Arms

SPORTS BARS...

Croxley's Ale House

Houston Hall

His favorite restaurants in NYC for Dinner...

Del Posto (85 10th Ave)

Marea (240 Central Park South)

Lavo (39 East 58th Street)

Tao Downtown (92 Ninth Ave) *I've eaten here and had a great time... 50 Cent was there the night we were there too.

Zuma Japanese Restaurant - NY (261 Madison Ave)

Spice Market (403 West 13th St)

His favorite restaurants for LUNCH...

Balthazar (80 Spring Street)

Bryant Park Grill (45 West 40th St)

Serefina Fabulous Grill (33 East 61st Street)

BROADWAY...

He says the only thing worth seeing on Broadway is a play called Hamilton. It is difficult to get tickets though. A matinee may be the only option. It is a Hip Hop take on the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

There are lots of strip clubs, a few S & M bars, and countless after hours clubs all around the city.... if you're interested in getting into a little trouble. LOL

BROOKLYN

Coney Island, Luma Park (Brooklyn 1208 Surf Ave... world famous amusement park)

Reynard's (80 Wyeth Ave.... great food, cool roof top bar overlooking NYC)

* Williamsburg Brooklyn is the new hot spot in NYC. There are countless bars and restaurants within walking distance of Reynard's.

Great info Selassie, thanks so much. I will definitely check some of that out.

Boston is not a huge city In 6 days you will see everything you need to. It is an easy city to walk around as well. Catch a ballgame especially if it is against a rival.
Rhode Island is close and could be a fun day trip. Both Providence and Newport are very cool.
I love the way they do their
Calamari Fritti
Point Judith fried squid, banana peppers, champagne butter, and mint In Rhode Island (Camilles on Bradford street) YUM!. Newport was the playground of the aristocrats and elite for Presidents and the extremely wealthy Giant Mansions on the coast. May remind you a bit of home.
Have Fun
You can take the train from Boston to NY and I believe it is around 5 hours but I am old and my memory is not always the best

@RhodyRams probably has some great tips

great list @Selassie I

I don't know about the museum, the memorial is free and no tickets, but the statue of liberty sells out in advance most days if you want to go inside.

Right, when you talk about the memorial, I think the museum too. Going up the new WTC is pretty cool too.

The Museum's that Selassie listed are awesome but to give them a fair go, you are looking at a full day in the Museum of natural history and at least half a day in MOMA. The subway is definitely the best way to get around. Expect to be shocked at the cost of food in the restaurants. You can do all of the main tourist sites in one day through the subway system. I have taken many friends and family on the standard, Statue of Liberty, St. Patrick's, Empire State Building, Chinatown, Rockefeller Center, So no, Grand Central Station tour in a day. Central park can eat up some time, but I think it is worth it. There are some darker, out of the way places in the park. If you see a sunken garden or a nook around the corner, avoid them. Any place that doesn't have people is not good.

The Bronx zoo is very nice if you are into that sort of thing.

And if you haven't been around sky scrapers before, take a neck warmer for use at the hotel. It is very compelling for first timers to constantly look up, while walking in Manhattan.

A friend of mine read ' The Newyorker' regularly. He said that it is a good way to learn about the non tourist types of everyday city life. You could also do some Google searches. I bet there are sites that suggest such things.
