[Getting to] Rams Final 53-Man Roster

It’s not personal, it’s just numbers. And the following list of 20 names could certainly contain a few who do make the final roster because we haven’t had that clear of a view of the depth chart this year. But we can also make educated guesses to start getting a picture of what the team might look like in two weeks.

The Los Angeles Rams have an 80-man roster that they need to get down to 53 on Sept. 5. That’s basically 10 more days to evaluate what they’ve got and which players they’ll need versus the ones who they expect to lose. It’s the last few cuts that seem to be the most difficult — naturally — but getting from 80 to 60 shouldn’t be as complicated.

Here are 20 players currently on the LA Rams who may not have had enough time yet to prove necessary to the team in 2020, based mostly on the a simple deduction: we haven’t heard much of anything at all this training camp on any of them.

QB Bryce Perkins (UDFA)

RB Xavier Jones (UDFA)

WR JJ Koski (UDFA)

WR Easop Winston (UDFA)

WR Trishton Jackson (UDFA)

WR Earnest Edwards (UDFA)

C Jeremiah Kolone (2018 UDFA)

C Cohl Cabral (UDFA)

TE Kendall Blanton (2019 UDFA)

DE Eric Banks (UDFA)

DE Jonah Williams (UDFA)

DT Michael Hoecht (UDFA)

LB Josh Carraway (2017 7th round, TEN)

LB Daniel Bituli (UDFA, signed this week)

LB Derrick Moncrief (2017 UDFA, signed this week)

LB Jachai Polite (2019 3rd round, NYJ)

S Jake Gervase (2019 UDFA)

S Dayan Ghanwoloku (UDFA)

S Juju Hughes (UDFA)

K Austin MacGinnis (2018 UDFA)

Of course, any coach would tell you that undrafted free agents are a vital piece of the NFL and make up a huge chunk of the league. I believe all of these guys entered camp with a chance to win a roster spot but the simple fact is that with only 53 spots, they’re going to have a more difficult time winning a job over someone drafted in the fourth round or a veteran free agent whose proven something at the pro level.

And that also means that in the course of the last month, any of these guys may have proven to Sean McVay and their position coach that they do belong in the NFL. We simply haven’t had enough reports or seen enough to be able to parse out who those undrafted free agents might be.

But that doesn’t mean we don’t know anything.

Undrafted free agent rookie linebacker Christian Rozeboom has been cited as a player outperforming his non-draft status. We’ve also see seventh rounder Clay Johnston struggling to pick up the defense during episodes of Hard Knocks. Rozeboom over Johnston would not be surprising because we’ve had reports that would support that.

Rozeboom and Johnston are also two players who’d be left on the bubble here.

If the Rams cut those 20 players, they’d need to release seven more to get down to 53. They could also cut more than seven and be adding outside options before hosting the Dallas Cowboys on September 13th.

Here are 15 more names to consider to get from 60 to 53:

RB John Kelly

G Jamil Demby

G Tremayne Anchrum

C Coleman Shelton

TE Johnny Mundt

DL Marquise Copeland

DL Morgan Fox

LB Natrez Patrick

LB Justin Lawler

LB Christian Rozeboom

LB Clay Johnston

CB Donte Deayon

CB Adonis Alexander

S Tyrique McGhee

K Sam Sloman

This is obviously more names than what the Rams would need to cut to get to 53, or even to sign free agents or pick players up off of waivers. So don’t take this as “Here’s how the Rams get down to 45 players!” If anything, it is to consider all the options they have.

I haven't seen Hard Knocks so maybe I'm missing info like on Rozeboom and Johnston. Hard to believes Johnston having trouble picking up the defense.

We get so little information about the lower level players it creates frustration. These are just some guys I liked/wonder about. Of course, there are many more battles happening. It can be a fine line on who makes the team and who goes to the PS. With a lot of free agencies pending the PS is greater importance for the Rams future plus the Covid watch.

RB Xavier Jones (UDFA)-is he better than J Kelly?

WR JJ Koski (UDFA) Is he the keeper WR. If not who is?

LB Jachai Polite (2019 3rd round, NYJ)-Liked him out of college. Can he at least be a rotational Edge/Pass Rusher or more?

DE Jonah Williams (UDFA)-These two had small school production and great workout numbers. Are they the future?
DT Michael Hoecht (UDFA)

LB Christian Rozeboom
-Do these two fit in for the Rams at some point?
LB Clay Johnston

CB Donte Deayon
-Both of these guys have been mentioned as doing well. Can either one make the team or is it back to PS?
CB Adonis Alexander

Correct me if I am wrong, but this year there’s up to 16 (6 vets) that can be in the practice squad. Each week you can protect four guys from being poached by other teams. That’s the key part if I understand correctly. Basically we have another 4 guys who are not on the 53 man roster but we can keep. So it’s almost like 57 man roster in a protective sense (can’t lose them).

Is Xavier Jones better then John Kelly? Kelly runs hard, however, does not seem to have much burst and really struggled in pass protection and something always seemed off on Kelly.

Everyone seems to feel Jones was overlooked and had a nose for the end zone at SMU, however, I could see the Rams claiming a RB too off waivers if they like someone.

Great Question on who will be the final WR, Koski seems too much like Kupp so stash him on the PS, but I will go with Trishton Jackson of Syracuse, good size, speed & vertical and great hands.

Jachai Polite, Rams seem to like him too, not sure if that translates to a roster spot with others that seem to have production on their side, however, he could be a darkhorse.

I still like Clay Johnston and he seems to be hanging around his position coach in Joe Barry. Be shocked if Johnston was cut as to Rozeboom don't see how he makes the squad.

Love Alexander's size, however, Deayon does a nice job of sticking with the WR's and is very good at getting his head turned around, which some Corners Struggle with.

Rams' 2nd scrimmage is crucial for players on roster bubble

[theramswire.usatoday.com]

Cameron DaSilva

From top to bottom, everyone on the Rams’ roster will benefit from the team’s second scrimmage at SoFi Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Jared Goff will get work with the starters, while the backups will get plenty of opportunities in the second half of the game.

As important as this intrasquad matchup will be for the first-team offense and defense, it’ll be even more crucial for those on the roster bubble fighting to make the 53-man team.

Sean McVay was asked Thursday what he hopes to see from the scrimmage, and he put an emphasis on the Rams’ younger players getting a big opportunity to showcase themselves in front of coaches.

“Just good, crisp execution on both sides. You want to limit the self-inflicted wounds, the pre-snap penalties. Whether it’s jumping offsides offensively or defensively. You want to see guys play with the right fundamentals and techniques, communicate at a high level,” he said. “Just as important as anything is kind of getting comfortable with that rhythm and routine. Staying at a new team hotel the night before and just being comfortable getting to the stadium, where they park, and how they’re getting to the locker room. As you guys saw, that’s quite a stadium. So, I just want to get all those things that sometimes you take for granted in a year where you don’t have those preseason opportunities to usually get that stuff figured out. That’s as big a part of this as anything. And then continue the evaluation of our roster. It’s going to be a really good opportunity for some of our younger players to get a significant amount of work in the second part of this scrimmage. Everything we do is important and evaluated, but this certainly represents a big ‘Opp’ for a lot of guys.”

McVay didn’t specifically say which players he’ll be keeping an eye on, but we can figure out who will need a strong showing in the scrimmage. Nsimba Webster is fighting to make the team as a return specialist and punt returner, while undrafted rookies Easop Winston, Earnest Edwards and Trishton Jackson will be competing for possibly the same roster spot.

On the offensive line, there’s plenty of fluidity. Will the Rams keep Brian Allen over promising rookie Cohl Cabral? Can Jamil Demby hold off Tremayne Anchrum as one of the final offensive linemen to make the team?

The top three running backs are set with Cam Akers, Malcolm Brown and Darrell Henderson, but if the Rams keep four, will it be Xavier Jones or John Kelly? Both players figure to see a lot of playing time in the scrimmage with Henderson out, and this might be Jones’ best chance yet to make an impression.

The lack of a preseason has really hurt the younger players fighting to make the team, but McVay won’t use that as an excuse for the roster being more difficult to set.

“I just think you wish you could provide more opportunities that a natural and normal schedule allows. You know, preseason games. It won’t be an excuse,” he said. “I think, like we said, we’re evaluating everything and that’s part of our job to make sure that we do a thorough job of getting these guys evaluated the right way, identifying our top players that are going to be on the active roster, who we deem as appropriate practice squad players and then hopefully help those guys that it doesn’t work out for them here, find some other opportunities based on the environment they’re in here.”

The Rams ran more than 140 plays in their scrimmage last week, but McVay doesn’t anticipate the snap count being that high this time around. He estimates that the starters will get 45-50 plays in, with the other half going to the backups and younger players. In total, he expects to run about 90-100 plays.

With just one more week of practices before final cuts on Sept. 5, this could be the last chance to shine for a lot of players.

He was kind of drawing attention to his mistakes tbh and the cameras of course picked up on that. I'm sure in those early drills there were a lot of dudes making mistakes. We unfortunately have no way of knowing whether he was standing out in that way.

For Johnston this scrimmage is pretty big though, no doubt. He's not going to get a better opportunity to jump guys on the depth chart, so fill hard in that run game, show you can get off blocks, don't look lost in your drops, and make the Rams' decision difficult. I expect him to be a cut but you never know.

Again the Kickers should be Center Stage and at this point you have to give the edge to the veteran CFL Star in Lirim Hajrullahu over Austin MacGinnis & Sam Slowman and as much as I really liked Slowman out of Miami of Ohio, Hajrullahu has a huge leg and might seem to be the best option from not being rattled and offer the Rams the best option.

Heck, I didn't know Johnston was able to play already. I thought he would be but thought he was still rehabbing.

Is Johnston going to make the PS?

Rozeboom?

Yeah I would definitely think Johnston makes the PS if he's cut and clears waivers. And if the Rams really like him they'll be able to protect him along with one of those kickers.

I also expect Snead to watch that waiver wire closely. I'm sure he always does that, but this year in particular there's probably going to be more mistakes in the cuts that teams with a sharp eye can take advantage of.

Yeah not to mention in today's league with offenses fishing for PI it's better to load your CB roster with guys who can stick on wideouts without too much hand usage. I like Deayon too, and he did some good things for us last year so he might be ready to take on a bigger role.

Kelly runs hard, however, does not seem to have much burst and really struggled in pass protection and something always seemed off on Kelly.

D Farr gave a shout out to Kelly something that he looks in great shape and is ready. He looked good to me his first preseason with a little burst in the screen game. I thought he would be better than he has shone. I'm sure Kelly knows he is on the bubble big time and will need to show today. I think he goes out with a fight.

I'm on the Deayon bandwagon too. Looked good last year and some good comments on his play from practice. I hope Alexander makes the PS. It's harder to stash good players with late cut downs.
