Many QB's where the brace on their support leg after the throw (left leg for righties) in practice and scrimmage. Mainly because a majority of the weight ends up on this leg after the throw and the knee is very exposed. I can't remember how many times I have seen a lineman OL & DL fall or end up on the QB's support leg after the throw leading to a severe injury (Tom Brady being one of them).

I would imagine this is just a precaution for the pre-season/practice.
