EARTH CITY, Mo. -- After playing a full season with a nagging left shoulder injury, St. Louis Rams offensive lineman Rodger Saffold is scheduled to have surgery on Wednesday.
"He needs to have the shoulder fixed," Rams coach Jeff Fisher said. "He’s going to. He’s excited about it, and we’re going to get it done as quickly as we can.”
For those wondering, yes, this is the same shoulder that the Oakland Raiders had enough questions about to fail Saffold on a physical during free agency last year. Clearly, the shoulder bothered Saffold for most of the season, but he was generally able to play through it.
In fact, Saffold played in all 16 games for only the second time since he came into the league in 2010 and the first time since that rookie season. Saffold wore a brace on the shoulder for most of the year and said before the season finale that he planned to have the operation done soon after the season.
While Saffold played in every game, he did miss big chunks of time in the Week 8 loss to Kansas City and the Week 13 win against Oakland when he had problems with the shoulder.
For the most part, though, Saffold was one of the few reliable linemen the Rams had from week to week. At various points in the season, he played both tackle and both guard spots with the bulk of his time coming at left guard.
The Rams still view Saffold's best position as right guard and will likely attempt to get him back to that spot but much will depend on how the offseason plays out. As it stands, only Saffold and left tackle Greg Robinson appear to be set in their spots heading into next season. Center Scott Wells is under contract but struggled in 2014 and could be a candidate to be released. Tackle Jake Long is coming off a second ACL injury and also could be a cap casualty.
Guard Davin Joseph and right tackle Joe Barksdale are unrestricted free agents.
Saffold signed a five-year contract with the Rams on March 14 of last year after the failed physical with Oakland. He said the surgery will take place in New York.
