I have 4 accounts set up at yahoo with fake money....they're about 2 years old.

#1 I started with $130,000....that account is now up to 237k
#2 I started with 100k and that account is up to 126k
#3 I started with 5k and thats up to 9800
#4 I started with 3k and its up to 3600

Its been my experience that it is extremely difficult to start with just 5,000 and make any real advancement....it takes months to see any substancial growth. As you can see from my stats at yahoo, its taken two years to go from 5k to 9.8k

It also takes alot of research. Its fun though. My best "win" was when reading about BP (I wanted to buy it when it got down to $32.00)...but anyway when reading about BP I learned of a smaller company called Petroleum Development Corp
(PETD ticker symble). They do the discovery and drilling for the major oil companies. I bought them at 24 bucks and they now trade at 59

I begged my gf to buy Bank of America when it got down to $5.52 last year. It now trades at $15.19

I also begged her to buy Sprint when it was a $2.06 last year...its now trading at $7.42

For perspective....just think of Warren Buffet, who supposedly "bailed out" Bank of America with a 5Biilion of purchased stock at a previously agreed upon price of 7 bucks.....everyone knew it was just a loan....but has he doubled his money to 10B ? I think he has.

I think this would be a great place for TD's story time:
Back in the day, mutual funds had 100K minimums, when the law changed Merril Lynch established a no load fund with no minimums called Lionel D. Eddy Capital Fund .
I bought $300 worth with my dad in joint tenancy, with a dividend re-invest feature ,then I got divorced and my ex wife got the security in the settlement.
I attempted to have Merril Lynch change ownership to the ex which required my dad to sign the papers ,in three attempts they never managed ,so I called my ex and asked her if it's be OK to just sell it and send her the check,we did that.
Afterwards I started getting notices in the mail telling me the account was in a "debit balance" about $50 which meant I owed them ,to which I said "F that " and threw the notice away. After six months they sent the explanation ,the transaction had occured on the dividend date was sold with the dividend attached but instead of sending the new owner the dividend they sent it to "us" twice .Upshot the ex got double divs. and I didn't have the money from it so I just kept throwing the notices away. About 18 months later they write me a letter acknowledging that I wasn't going to pay them and saying they were going to credit the account ,which they DID TWICE. So NOW I start getting these monthly statements of account in credit balance with dividends accruing .I decided to just ignore them and at the end of the year I get a 1099 for my taxes ,so I include it in my "return".
That was 1987 or 88, the fund has changed names twice to Merril Lynch Cap and is now known as Blackrock, the account is currently worth $1367.06 and is legally mine,,my intention is to never sell it pass it on to my grandson when he is old enough to understand what transpired and ask him to do the same until my descendants own the fund because of a stupid clerical error.

Yeah - I never open my bank statements as I do my banking on-line and really just review my account to make sure nothing looks out of whack. I suppose if someone set something up to take a few bucks out of my account each month, I wouldn't likely catch it. I'm guessing this because I set up a custodial account for one of my sons some time back. Shortly after, the bank changed the way it does things and if you had them automatically deposit $25 into a custodial account, they'd waive all the other fees on my other accounts - interestingly also $25. Well, I forgot about it until my son wanted a laptop for college and asked about his account. I thought there was about $150 in the account because we really never used it or paid any attention to it. He had also turned 18 so we thought we'd just close it and use the money toward the laptop. Turns out there was over $1000 in the account and BofA is missing the fact that because he is over 18, he shouldn't qualify for a custodial account anymore. Think we'll let it ride until they figure it out. Custodial accounts are interest earning and have no fees so I guess we'll see where it goes.

Just put $11,500 on Galena Pharmacutical (GALE). Will see what it does in just one day. It went up 4.85% yesterday amid strong reports of continued growth.

Above is one of my yahoo accounts. I bought 15,000 shares of GALE for $1.25 a share over a year ago at a total cost of $18,750. Its now trading at $4.54 and my intial "investment" is worth $68,100
