Rams trade No. 31 pick to the Falcons
Clarence Dennis

General manager Les Snead and the Rams will go without a first-round pick for the third-consecutive NFL Draft in 2019.

v13g2ycsfevyp3wdvh9h.jpg

The Rams sent a pair of picks (No. 31, No. 203) to the Falcons for second and third-round picks (No. 45, No. 79), passing up on the chance to take a first rounder for the first time since drafting quarterback Jared Goff No. 1 overall back in 2016.

The defending NFC Champions now hold seven picks in the 2019 NFL Draft and are slated to make their first pick at No. 45 overall.

Trading away the first-round selection has become a bit of trend in Los Angeles. Snead and his staff sent the Rams’ 2017 first-round pick to the Titans as part of the package for to land Goff in 2016. A few weeks before last year’s draft, the club sent their first-round pick to the Patriots for wide receiver Brandin Cooks.

The Falcons used the No. 31-overall pick to select OT Caleb McGary.

Rams 2019 Draft Picks

Second round No. 45

Third round No. 79, No. 94, No. 99

Fourth round No. 133

Fifth round No. 169

Seventh round No. 251

The 2019 NFL Draft continues Friday at 4:00 p.m. PDT.

My question now is whether the Rams sit on these spots in the 3'rd or attempt to move up in the 2'nd ?

Los Angeles Rams trade back from #31 with Atlanta Falcons

The Rams found their suitor to pull off a trade and stack up some additional draft capital

The Los Angeles Rams have pulled off a trade with the Atlanta Falcons to move back from #31 and add some draft capital.

The Rams have sent the 31st pick and 203rd pick in the 6th round for Atlanta’s 45th in the second and 79th in the third round.

I laid out the case for this in February:

Specifically because of the trades, the Rams are in the unusual position of needing to backfill a gap in the roster timeline because of the sheer number of trades General Manager Les Snead has pulled off. Had the Rams held on to all those picks, they might already have a quarterback on the roster to supplant Sean Mannion as the QB2. They might have had an edge rusher that would have negated the motivation to trade for Fowler in the first place. They might already have the cornerback depth they severely need once Talib and perhaps even CB Marcus Peters are gone after the 2019 season.

It’s just a function of needing to fill in the middle of the roster with the top already set.

Rams General Manager Les Snead alluded to a move like this earlier this week:

The benefits of trading back would be, can you acquire an extra mid-round pick? The way we painted the picture – if you trade back, can you get an extra player like a (WR) Cooper Kupp, a (S) John Johnson (III), a (T) Joseph Noteboom, (C) Brian Allen, a (WR) Josh Reynolds – some guys that we’ve gotten in the third and fourth (rounds) – (OLB) Samson Ebukam, (DL) John Franklin-Myers. The key there is those are people who had a role here and it’s up to us if we do that, to still draft right and develop right.

In the end, the Rams are going to go a third year in a row without a first-round pick. We’ll get into the drafting action tomorrow when the Rams are on the clock with the 45th pick.

Did we get proper comp for moving back 15 spots? Seems we shouldn't have had to give up that 6th rounder but what do I know????

Well, with the 6th it's 610 points the Rams are giving up vs 645 coming back. A tiny bit light, IF you think the 5th year option is worth approximately 50 points - but I could be wrong on that. On the straight draft value chart (made before the 5th year option) it's about as good as could be expected, with the Seahawks looking to trade down right before the Rams. The big thing is that for the first the Rams picked up two picks above 80, and the pick at 203 is not likely to be an impact player. So for pick 31, they'll get two players that I trust Snead to find nice value with. I suspect the 2nd will get one of a group of players the Rams had clustered on their draft chart. Pick 79 should get good value too.

I was thinking the same thing. Seeing what other teams got for in trade to move back, ours seems like peanuts. Not sure it was a great value for us, but in Snead I trust

It was a good value, with teams in front of the Rams trading back it wasn't a great value. Definitely not peanuts. With the Seahawks looking to trade back, a great value was not going to happen.

Yeah, I get the points value angle of it but moving back 15 spots seems huge when top tier players are getting slim at this stage of the draft but that's just my novice butt analyzing talent. It does make tomorrow's draft a lot more interesting for us though. Probably 4 Top 100 players coming our way, maybe mostly red-shirt guys but we need that for 2020 so..............

I doubt they would have taken it unless all the guys who really stood out for them hadn't been taken. As many predicted - there just isn't a whole ton of draft value between pick 30-50 or so. Some will end up much better, but there is a difficulty in predicting which of these players will do so, given the limited access that teams have. So if it's a crap shoot, there's an advantage in having multiple picks, where they can trade up quickly if need be to get somebody they value.

Never understood why teams put a lot of value on picks after the first round. Even first round picks have probably an 80% bust rate.

Well, since teams on average have 8 picks a year (counting comp picks) and the average career is - what? 3.5 years? That's just not true. The roster is 53, the number of players who get significant playing time has to be in the upper 30s to lower 40s at least each season not counting special teams, if not more. Yes, there are absolute busts, and more who take a year or two to develop. Mid round picks are vital to teams, in terms of having decent players to fill out the rosters. If they only had firsts, they wouldn't have any team, especially if 80% of firsts bust (which they don't).

Besides - the Rams' best receiver is Kupp. By 2020 their starting OTs will have been drafted in the third. On your theory, say goodbye to them.

I didn't watch the draft and pretty much expected them to move down, but Jesus there are some good players still on the board. Happy with the move down, now the next couple days are going to be fun it's really nice to have an additional round 3 pick.

Good lord reading TST is just painful. I haven't seen so toxic a gathering of self appointed Einsteins in a very long time.

Incidentally, the Rams have zero first rounders on their OL going into 2019. Even Whitworth was a latter half of the 2nd round pick. There just is too much evidence that post 1st rounders have value.

Personally, I'm glad that they traded a very late first rounder for a mid 2nd and mid 3rd rounder. That seems to be where the value is, once the elite prospects were taken.
