Definitely a shot in the dark at edge, but is big, has vines for arms, and good athletic traits.

Really good sophomore season but fell back to the average the last two years.

Thanks for doing these Memento.

Nice work.

As for the pick, I know nothing of the prospect but like the idea of getting multiple edge guys and increasing the odds of landing a player.

I like my Edges rangy and menacing. Looking forward to seeing what Henderson can do with him. Welcome to the Rams you nasty QB eating bastid.

We must have strong scouting ties to TCU isn't that the 3rd guy we have taken that played there

Watching Mathis's highlights one thing kinda stood out. A few sacks or disruptions were caused by his relentless motor. He got a couple sacks after the quarterback left the pocket because he doesn't quit. Hopefully that can translate into a nice rotational piece.

Rooting for the guy but this pick feels like we are throwing darts for an edge rusher.
Seeing Luke Wypler, an almost guaranteed future starter on the IOL, go one pick later makes this one a little painful.

Well Edge was without a doubt the biggest weakness on defense. IOL was addressed early. Just look at what the Eagles did with multiple edge rushers. It’s a premium position. As for Wypler his size is an issue. Pro Comparison was Brian Allen. He said in his bio he was a big fan of Brian Allen. Models his game after him. His biggest weakness is being bull rushed by big DL. Just like his idol Brian.

They are rare but Wypler is that. He may have fallen based on some medical issues but he will be a starter for Cleveland when healthy.

Mathis is going to have to prove that his first TCU year wasn’t a fluke. He was invisible at Nebraska, in his final year, when players are supposed to get better. He has outstanding physical traits, but that can only get you so far - just ask Vernon Gholston.

Mathis doesn’t have the replies because unlike Young, Hampton, or even Johnson, he hasn’t had the stats to back his physical traits up.

Adding more (stupid phone), Mathis also has to compete with Hoecht (who had an outstanding year as a pass rusher), Hardy (who dominated a lower level and also had outstanding physical traits), and Thomas (who made the team out of camp after a dominant preseason).

That’s a lot of competition at edge (not counting UDFA edge rushers), even if Hoecht moves back to the line. I’m not saying Mathis won’t be on the roster, but he’ll need to prove an absolute hell of a lot more than he has thus far.

Si provide a pretty comprehensive report on him and had him ranked as a 5th round prospect

He’s a good pick. We will have to see whether he has already been working on his technique during the offseason. That’s the knock. If he doesn’t look more polished, we may need to be patient. Needs more playing strength but mainly more craft

Honestly didn’t have him rated. Mathis always had the physical traits, always had vines for arms, but other than his sophomore TCU year, he hasn’t been nearly as effective. McSnead must believe that his sophomore year wasn’t a fluke; I personally do not, but I’m hoping I’m wrong.
