Los Angeles Rams roster preview: History repeats itself for CB Kevin Peterson
Time is a flat circle.

It’s a long shot for Los Angeles Rams CB Kevin Peterson.

In fact, saying he won’t make the Rams’ 2019 53-man roster wouldn’t be an incorrect position to take. In a world where anything can happen, and almost nothing is a diamond absolute, this seems like a pretty concrete fortune.

Roster battle
Peterson is a long shot because the Rams are packed with talent at the defensive back position and he’s just missed out on time. Two years ago, Peterson was the victim of the numbers game with a position group far less talented than this year’s squad, and last year he missed the entire season after going to injured reserve having torn his ACL in the first game of the preseason.

So he’s at the back of the cornerback depth chart likely battling guys like Darious Williams (roster preview) and Dominique Hatfield in training camp.

Expectations
As if it wasn’t hard enough to battle top tier talent in his position group, Peterson will also face the issues of returning from that ACL injury. It’s been nearly a year since then, and I’m sure he’s had plenty of time to rehab and gain his strength back (or close to completely back). But returning to the game is not as simple as getting back on the bike.

Chances of making the roster (0.5/10)
This is what 3k gave Peterson in 2017, and that’s about as high as I figure his chances will be coming into camp. Peterson did some good things in the 2017 preseason and was ultimately waived.

We’ll see if the flat circle of time offers him a way out this year.

Without injuries to others, he's gone in imo. I forget he was even a Ram, to tell you the truth

I go back to his last game he wore horns.I think he actually cost The Rams a victory in
the playoffs.Really could have made a couple plays if he was more aggressive & confident.

I liked his up & his ball skills. A good cover CB. Missed a opportunity last season with all the injuries. Now Draft pick David Long might push him off the roster.
Troy Hill just signed a 2 year contract as well, adding more veteran leadership to the squad. He is solid on special teams as well.
I like Richards another UDFA from OSU that seems to always make plays in practice. He flashes, but not sure he is well rounded ??

Just my take. Kevin Peterson has been a sleeper of mine 2 seasons ago. The Rams depth now has got so much better with Talib,Peters trades & now David Long callings into The Rams Lap.
Hatfield,Hill,Richardson,& Peterson have been excellent finds by LES SNEAD with a lot of holes to fill without very many draft picks.I can’t express how much The Rams MAC/Snead has filled this roster. McVay & Wade have real NFL credit.

Peterson made much more of an impact than Hatfield did when the opportunities were given, so he has a step on him as well as any rookie not named David Long.

The Peterson I saw in late 2017 was better than both Troy Hill and Hatfield. I had high hopes for him last season before the injury. Coming off the ACL makes his road tougher even though it was early in the preseason when he was hurt. Troy Hill is no roster lock for sure. Hill has probably reached his ceiling and his growth is mostly maxed out at this point in his career. Peterson however, can still be view as a developmental talent with room to mature.

I trust the Rams coaching staff but mark me as unimpressed with Troy Hill. I would like to see someone with more upside to fill the CB 5 slot. I am thinking a healthy Peterson could be that guy.

Kevin Peterson is strictly a zone CB. He lacks the size and speed to play the boundary. He's got the agility to play slot CB but again lacks the speed to do so. His future in the NFL would be with a team like the Chargers that play a lot of zone coverage or with the Rams strictly as a ST player. I simply don't see him making the last cut except as a ST's player.

Rams might play more zone if they are are using the fifth CB. Hard to find 4-5 good man coverage CB. They played zone in the SB.

He is smaller. Had some ankle/leg injuries in college but, was a high school 100 M and 200 M champ. Seems like a tough guy in a smaller package.

OVERVIEW
While not the tallest or thickest corner in the draft class, Peterson might be one of the toughest, coming back from preseason knee surgery and playing through an ankle injury during his senior year to be named first team All-Big 12. The three-year starter actually got his first opportunity with the first team in the Cowboys' final game of his freshman season (20 tackles, two pass breakups). The former state high school 100-meter and 200-meter champion has produced in coverage (two interceptions, 11 pass breakups in 2014; one INT, six PBU in 2015) and is willing to mix it up on the outside, totaling 101 stops the past two years.

PRO DAY RESULTS

40-yard dash: 4.56 and 4.57 seconds
ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS
Smart player. Plays with field awareness and a high IQ. Responds from quarters coverage when he sees a safety needs help. Can flip hips and hit his top speed fairly quickly. Reads cues from receiver's eyes when deep ball is approaching and times his breakup attempt. Confident demeanor on the field and in coverage. Peeks in on quarterback from zone and is quick to help attack a slot throw. More aware than instinctive. Patient feet from press coverage and has adequate directional change. Not a big guy, but will mix it up against the run. Held his own against Josh Doctson and Corey Coleman.
WEAKNESSES
His height is borderline but his frame is smaller than desired by NFL standards for outside corners. Allowed four broken tackles. Will sit down to challenge receivers underneath, but a step slow to recognize when to turn and chase. Recovery speed is average. Not a long corner and needs to crowd receivers to make plays on the ball. Physical receivers with size can put him on their hip. Gears get stuck in neutral when trying to burst forward from top of his backpedal.
DRAFT PROJECTION
Rounds 6 or 7
BOTTOM LINE
Peterson's confidence and football intelligence will grow on you after awhile. It's not always clean, but he finds ways to disrupt throws and man his position. Size limitations make a move inside as a nickel corner possible, but he has enough quickness and coverage savvy to stick on a roster.

I consider Peterson more of a lock than Hatfield or the others. I don't care about the ACL; he can play when healthy, and it looks like he is healthy.

I look forward to 3K being wrong (yet again).

Don’t agree on Troy Hill
