The St. Louis Rams decided to promote from within to fill the roster spot created by cornerback Al Harris' season-ending knee injury Sunday in Cleveland.

Cornerback Nate Ness, a University of Arizona product who entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Browns, has been promoted from the Rams' practice squad to the active roster.

Ness, 6-1, 190, played in four games last season _ three with Miami and one with this week's Rams opponent, Seattle. Ness has been with the Rams' practice squad for only three weeks.

On Monday, the Rams added linebacker Justin Cole to their active roster, signing him off Kansas City's practice squad. So that's how the Rams filled the roster spots created by Harris' season-ending injury and tight end Michael Hoomanawanui's season-ending knee injury _ with Ness and Cole.

***The Rams had four players in for visits and workouts Tuesday:

_ Cornerback Trumaine McBride, a five-year NFL veteran who has appeared in 47 games with 10 starts for Chicago and Arizona. McBride was a seventh-round pick in 2007 by the Bears out of Mississippi.

_ Cornerback Kendric Burney, a rookie free agent from North Carolina, who was in Carolina's training camp this summer.

_ Cornerback Chris Smith, a rookie free agent from Northern Illinois who was in Rams camp for about a week this summer before suffering a knee injury.

_ Offensive tackle Thomas Welch, who spent time with Minnesota in 2010 and appeared in three games this season with New England.

With the promotion of Ness, the Rams have a practice squad spot open, and Burney, Smith and Welch are practice squad eligible.

"I was a little upset (at myself) but coach Sporano told me to just keep my head up and go redeem myself."

That should work out nicely. I wonder if he would have helped to put the game away if coach Sporano said, "You fucking dumbass, do you have any idea what you're doing out there? Sit the fuck down." Relax, I'm just playing around. All coaches have different styles, and players respond to things differently.
