Rams Pro Football Focus tidbits heading into Week 12

Pro Football Focus (PFF) has a team of more than 300 staffers evaluating every NFL play from the Hall of Fame game to the Super Bowl. After each game, players, as well as each team's offensive, defensive and special teams units, are graded on a scale of 0 to 100; the closer a player or unit is to 100, the better. A full explanation of their evaluation process can be found here for additional context.

Here's a look at some of the noteworthy Rams-centric assessments leading into Week 12.

EVANS HAS POSITIVE FIRST START

With all the changes to the Rams' offensive line due to injuries, a good amount of attention was being paid toward rookie Bobby Evans at right tackle, where he was making his first career start. He more than held his own, based on what PFF saw.

Per PFF, the former Oklahoma standout allowed zero pressures in 21 pass-blocking snaps last night. His pass-blocking grade of 74.6 marked the second-best performance by a Los Angeles right tackle this season.
It's a small sample size, but the performance certainly gives him something to build off of. And with the Rams' regular starting RT Rob Havenstein doubtful to play Monday night, he'll likely get the opportunity to do so.

JOSEPH-DAY DELIVERS CAREER-BEST PERFORMANCE

Playing in front of his parents for the first time in his NFL career, NT Sebastian Joseph-Day authored a performance that would've made them proud.

The Rutgers product posted an overall defensive grade of 85.9 and a run defense grade of 85.2 against the Bears, both career bests. In the last five games, he's averaged 78.6 for his overall grade with a 69.1 or better.
Replicating that performance would go a long way in helping the Rams' defense try to contain the NFL's No. 1 rushing offense this week.

HILL HELPING THE SECONDARY

Since entering the starting lineup, CB Troy Hill has been in asset to the Rams' secondary in the eyes of PFF.
The scouting service says he's been targeted 34 times over the Rams' last six games, allowing just 16 receptions. In other words, opposing receivers are only catching passes from their quarterbacks 47.1 percent of the time.

Against the Bears, opposing receivers caught only three of their seven targets against Hill.

SJD never gets talked about, but he has been really good. No doubt he is having a significant impact on the run defense, as he is pretty immovable at the POA. Hill has been fantastic, and still people hate on him. He had a few completions against him in the 1st half of the Steelers game, and since then - nothing notable.

Agreed. SJD has been a bull in the middle as of late. We are now ranked top 5 vs the run and he is a big reason.

Rapp has been lights out as well.

Christian and Hill have played well so far as well.

PFF is hyping Hill, but I don't see it. As for Evans, I hope it's a sign of good things, but he received a lot of help. Hopefully, he gets the job done versus the Ravens.

What don't you see? PFF's number are off a bit, but for Hill:

20-39, 226 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 66.8 passer rating against
0 missed tackles

What more do you want from this guy?

Any DL conversion about next year will start with Donald, Joseph-Day and who is the third?
The guy has been excellent this year and steadily improved since week one.
He has been the pleasant sunrise of the D.
Would love to add another playmaker to the DL.

We were last in run defense last season if memory serves. From last to third is crazy good improvement and SJD is a big part of that. Brock has improved too btw.

NRC has turned it up no doubt. And Hill has played well in small windows before but it has been consistency that kills him. Maybe he sustains it this time.

This team has the pieces if the OL can sustain recent play.

Him being 10 yards off and giving up easy catches.

With Peters and Talib being gone Hill is making the most of his opportunity. I have always believed that Hill is much better playing man than zone, which they can now do with Ramsey here. I always felt that they had to play zone because Peters was not physical enough to play man.

Shout out to Reeder as well. He looks steady in there and can stand runners up when he gets there. Haven’t even had to think about using Kenny Young or Howard on D yet. Like SJD, I see improvement week to week. Nice to have him and get Allen back on the PS.

Gaines? Haven’t heard much about him or from him, wonder how he fits in.

Looks fat to me, JMHO. Joseph-Day making more of an impact, have to give Gaines a year of strength & conditioning, but to this point, he really hasn't made an impact, but that's more because of SJD then him, however, he needs to be in better shape even for somebody like Gaines, who will always look out of shape.

He has been active for a few games.
I’m sure he is in the plans as a depth guy behind Jospeh-Day and a rotational guy.
He hasn’t flashed much but hasn’t been a disappointment in my opinion.

He also has only been active for about half the games.
Hard to know what kind of shape Gaines is in but he is a rotational guy.
He isn’t missing games because of conditioning.

He has been hit and miss but is a keeper as a solid depth guy of nothing else.

0 catches allowed on 125 attempts.

But seriously, I feel some people have unusually high expectations for players. Not everyone can be a Donald or a Ramsey.

Many doubted SJD before the season. He is proof that a good offseason workout program can make a difference. Gaines was the favorite going in but, hasn't played much. He has been effective in his limited playing time. Looking forward to watching both in the future. I think could see more playing time down the stretch to help against running teams.

If he's playing off 10 yards, that's because Wade told him too. You think he's freelancing?

That's untrue.

He's given up 226 yards passing all season on barely 50% comp% - that's literally 22.6 YPG.

According to PFF. (It's also worth noting that Hill didn't become a starter until Talib's injury.)
