Rams PFF grades: Best and worst performers vs. Patriots in Week 11

The Los Angeles Rams bounced back nicely in Week 11 by beating the New England Patriots on the road Sunday, rebounding from their disappointing loss to the Miami Dolphins last Monday night. The offense finally ended drives with touchdowns instead of field goals, which was the difference in the 28-22 victory.

Pro Football Focus handed out grades for each player in the win and the offense was led by Puka Nacua, who set a career-high with a 92.6 overall grade. On defense, it was Kamren Kinchens topping the unit with a 92.6 grade, also a career-high for the rookie.

Here are some of the best and worst performers from the Rams' Week 11 win (min. 10 snaps).

Top 5 offense

  • RG Kevin Dotson: 90.1

  • QB Matthew Stafford: 79.9
Nacua was outstanding in Sunday's win, catching seven passes for 123 yards and a touchdown. His 92.6 grade was the highest of his career.

Dotson had one of his best games as a Ram, allowing zero pressures and posting a run-blocking grade of 90.3.

Parkinson was only targeted once and played just 19 snaps but his lone reception went for a 19-yard touchdown.

Jackson only allowed one pressure, excelling in both pass protection (79.5) and run blocking (89.9).

Stafford made two big-time throws and snapped his six-game interception streak with zero picks or turnover-worthy plays.

Brown had one pressure and two stops, finishing the day with two total tackles.

Fiske was tied for second on the team with three pressures, adding two more sacks to his rookie-leading total of five on the year.

Turner only had one pressure in the win but he made seven tackles, batted one pass and had a tackle for a loss.

  • CB Ahkello Witherspoon: 50.3
  • DE Jonah Williams: 44.5

Witherspoon allowed three catches for a team-high 40 yards, including one touchdown.

  • WR Cooper Kupp: 75.4
  • LB Omar Speights: 74.2
  • OLB Jared Verse: 70.1
Limmer was great once again, allowing only one pressure in 27 pass-blocking snaps.

Kupp scored two touchdowns and had 106 yards receiving, but his run-blocking (44.5) weighed his whole grade down.

Speights recorded three pressures as a blitzer and didn't miss a single tackle, finishing with six total tackles in the win.

Verse led the Rams again with four pressures and he didn't miss any tackles, which is a good sign for the rookie edge rusher.

Speights seems like he continues to improve week to week. I like him and Rozeboom as a pairing. :thumbsup1:

It was only Avila's second game back from injury. Maybe he needs a little time to develop the chemistry with the other guys. I'm not worried about him. He'll be fine. Looks like another late round gem in Limmer. Not as flashy as a wide receiver or running back like Puka and Kyren. But important to the offense nonetheless.

Avila has a far bigger draw ahead with the Eagles. Carter's gonna be coming for his pudding cup.

Verse also didn't moss any tackles. Kind of surprised with AJax being that high a couple bad penalties and missed block. Also I cringe every time I see Witherspoon in coverage.

The DL as a group are playing well together now and you see QBs have much less wiggle room as that first rusher arrives. That's the key to Verse not having those missed tackles. Can't have him breaking through and the QB having 3 different escape choices due to the other guys being creative rush artists.

And it's a good sign that we have this going with the Eagles ahead. Because that QB will look to run and hurt us. I'm most worried about the DL up front. Watch those lateral loops, can't give this QB a big lane because he'll take it.

What is “average” when it comes to these scores? Is it as easy as 50, with 100 being the max? Sounds simple enough, but I know there’s a QB rating system that does not use a scale of 1-100.

While I was reading your post I had flashbacks to the zona game. The Rams pass rush chased Murray around all day but couldn’t get him down. I think Verse missed him 3 times on one play.

They’re missing less tackles and I anticipate a different game next time the Rams play zona and have to chase down murray.

How amazing is that… when our worst scores are basically in the 60s… that used to be our high…

Every week another rookie or second year player on D seems to have a breakout game… if our Offense can just get an early lead, we’re almost unbeatable…

McClendon isn't in these PFF top, bottom or notables but I read somewhere that he didn't allow any pressures or sacks so probably his run blocking was low, but since his overall isn't bottom 5 low he's somewhere between 64 and 70. I'll take no pressures or sacks from him any time.

I like to check PFF grades each week and I know they're not always accurate, but here's an interesting story regarding an NFL coach disputing the grades.

https://lionswire.usatoday.com/2024...dave-fipp-tears-down-pff-dvoa-grading-system/

After noting how the special teams DVOA metrics overvalues return yards, (Lions ST coach) Fipp turned his attention to Pro Football Focus, or PFF. It’s probably best to just let you read it…(as transcribed by the Lions media relations):

“So, the next one is PFF, and I’ve got two good stories for you on PFF, and it’s the PFF grades. And this came up this week again because somebody in the building came to me and said, ‘Hey, there is this player, he’s playing really well for you guys.’ And I’m like, ‘Who said that?’ They said, ‘Well, PFF.’ And I was like, ‘OK.’ Well, here’s two stories for you on PFF. Number one is, I get on a plane, I think I was going to the Combine, this is years ago, and when I sit down, this guy sitting next to me says, ‘Hey, are you a coach for – ‘ I think I was with Philly at the time. I’m like, ‘Yeah,’ And he’s like, ‘Ah, I’m a grader of PFF.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, OK.’ He was a young guy, I’m like, ‘Tell me about yourself.’ The guy had never coached football, never played football and he’s grading our players on who played good and who played bad.

So, I’m like, ‘Wow.’ So, the PFF grade, like, OK. And the next thing on that is, we play a game at the Giants and the special teams coach at the time or assistant there at the time was a good friend of mine, and he came up to me before the game and he said, ‘Hey man, just so you know, this player –‘ I can’t say his name, he’s actually in the media nowadays, but he said, ‘This player, he’s the best rated front-line blocker on kickoff return in the National Football League.’ And I was like, ‘Who said that?’ And he was like, ‘PFF.’ And then I was like, ‘PFF?’

I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ I’m like, ‘Number one, this guy’s like the worst blocker on our team.’ But number two, we put him on these matchups on the backside of the return every week where he’s blocking basically a guy that doesn’t need to be blocked, but we kind of have to block him just in case. So, he wins the matchup, so he got a good PFF grade, and he’s really the worst player on our team at this job description, but he’s really the best with PFF.

The PFF rating system works like this:

90+ is elite, All pro stuff
80 - 89 is good, pro bowl level
70 - 79 is above average
60 - 69 is average
50 - 59 is below average
40 - 49 is poor
30 - 39 is very poor
<30 (like Arcuri's 25.9 against Detroit) is take 'em outside and execute 'em. Or at least immediate cut.

Spoon is interesting. He had such a feast or famine season last year. He was always right on the edge of being beat but would luck out most of the time. He did have some ints but he also had some points put up on him.
He honestly looks a little outta shape And slow. I mean who tf knows what he was doing when the rams called him.

Not luck all the time. He plays trail position a lot on deeper stuff and tries to use closing speed and long arms (which he has) to play the ball.
He got beat later in the year when he had a tweaked groin.
Hes not a shut down corner, but, he can play man or zone and I think he is a solid CB.
He shouldn't be the 1 CB but he can certainly be a good part of a D backfield.
He gets too much shit on here for how he has actually played.
